16:30 important and and are are counterveiling
16:35 forces I don't quite know what the word

16:57 um some nights like last night it'll be

17:09 nights there's a solid 15 minutes where

17:21 um it may not come as a surprise to you
17:25 based on that comment I don't have an
17:27 agenda and I don't really give a [ __ ]

17:32 agenda here's the purpose of these lives
17:36 I mean if you want to come here and
17:37 learn just come here night after night
17:39 after night you'll learn but but the
17:40 whole point of this isn't really about
17:42 what I'm talking about can be
17:44 interesting very often not what this is
17:47 really about is you just being in the
17:50 conversation about
17:52 AI just kind of taking it in and while
17:54 you're listening to me or put me in the
17:56 background and be making pictures in in
17:59 open ai's new thing or over in mid
18:01 Journey or making songs over here or
18:03 figuring out how to prompt
18:06 Manis chatting with people in the
18:09 comments and asking questions is you
18:11 know if is he ever going to make a point
18:13 you know that sort of [ __ ] this is about
18:15 the community it's about interacting and
18:18 it's about just being in the
18:19 conversation of AI so yeah I may not get
18:21 to anything tonight so yes I'm still
18:23 doing this and I'll keep doing this for
18:25 a while so so if you don't like it get

18:31 okay so two things happened tonight
18:34 counterveiling
18:36 forces or not not two things two themes
18:39 emerge tonight that I that I think are
18:41 counterveiling
18:43 themes
18:46 um one of them was echoed by both Leah
18:50 who I co-founded and co-host the salon
18:52 with and and myself we we both felt this
18:54 and then a couple other people were
18:55 talking about it too is that the
19:00 the new image gen from chat
19:02 GPT
19:04 um is a big big big big big [ __ ] deal
19:08 it's a big [ __ ]
19:09 deal now it's not perfect it's it's
19:12 janky it doesn't always do [ __ ] right
19:14 but it's a big [ __ ]
19:16 deal tonight for the first time I kind
19:19 of felt
19:24 like it
19:26 is yeah it can't be that big I feel like
19:29 it's in the neighborhood of as important
19:32 as chat
19:34 GPT and here's why I feel like it's in
19:36 that neighborhood that because it's
19:39 visual because it makes images and
19:43 because it can make images that look
19:45 like complete layouts and you can make
19:48 magazine covers and print ads
19:50 and crazy photos and character
19:54 consistency like there's just so many
19:56 things that it does in the context of a
19:58 coners
20:01 ation that you really can't get your
20:04 head around it you can't believe it you
20:06 can't believe like oh we can do that now
20:09 and and people who've been in AI for a
20:11 while are like well you know you could
20:13 you could do that stuff in Leonardo you
20:16 know six months ago okay yeah but you
20:18 had to [ __ ] learn the interface of
20:19 Leonardo and you had to go over there
20:21 you had to be aware enough to go over
20:22 there and do that this is inside chat
20:25 GPT it's just doing this magical kind of
20:28 [ __ ] what
20:30 happened I'm not I'm not showing
20:32 anything Brandon yeah
20:36 um and
20:39 so for the first time it feels to me
20:42 like because it's
20:45 visual people that have been not paying
20:47 attention to AI because it was all text
20:50 for the most part like it made pictures
20:52 but it it didn't compel them to go there
20:55 they're going to see these outputs and
20:57 go I got to learn how to do this and
20:59 they're going to go into chat GPT and
21:01 they're going to see what it does and
21:03 they're going to have one of those face
21:04 melting Kevin McAllister
21:07 moments
21:09 and I look at the
21:12 output of image
21:15 gen and for the first time I viscerally
21:19 felt this is going to cost people jobs
21:23 now I think I think coding you know the
21:25 coding's been getting better and better
21:27 and better I think I think coding jobs
21:29 tech jobs we're going to start to see um
21:32 that industry you know hit um I think
21:36 writing copyrighting things like that
21:38 we've seen we've seen some impacts there
21:40 that's going to get more dramatic but
21:42 there's something about the visual thing
21:44 that that it just all of a sudden felt
21:46 like viscerally like this is going to
21:49 cost jobs so that was one of the themes
21:52 is that this is a big deal you've got to
21:54 pay attention to it the implications of
21:57 it are are
22:00 big and potentially
22:03 devastating one
22:05 theme the other theme was before we
22:08 started the salon we were
22:10 talking and Adnan who was one of the
22:13 guys that spoke that that is one of the
22:15 co-authors of the book um said oh I just
22:18 launched my IOS app and I didn't know he
22:21 had an IOS
22:23 app but he just said I just launched my
22:26 ILS app and then Leah um from the the
22:29 salon said oh I I spent four hours today
22:32 and I I launched a print OnDemand brand
22:37 I was like wait what I didn't know you
22:39 were doing that um and then there were a
22:42 couple other people that were talking
22:43 about their projects and and the other
22:46 theme that kind of
22:47 emerged is that people who've been in
22:51 this conversation back to the reason for
22:53 this whole Channel or the whole reason
22:55 for this channel being in the
22:57 conversation
22:59 the people who've been in actively in
23:01 this AI conversation for some
23:05 time are starting to do some really
23:08 remarkable things and it's really
23:10 remarkable things that are way outside
23:12 what their expertise was a year ago like
23:16 way outside of
23:18 it and so on one hand you've got this
23:22 technology that's going to cost people
23:24 jobs and then on the other hand you've
23:26 got these people who are like huh these
23:31 tools can give me superpowers why don't
23:33 I just see what I can do with these
23:35 superpowers and like oh [ __ ] I can build
23:38 an IOS app and launch it oh [ __ ] I can
23:41 build a whole print on demand brand and
23:44 launch the website in four hours that's
23:47 what Leah did it's
23:50 like and so like where my head is right
23:54 now is
23:55 like you got to get off the [ __ ]
23:58 Sidelines you got to get off the [ __ ]
23:59 Sidelines if you if you're if you're
24:01 [ __ ] footing around AI if you're
24:03 tiptoeing around the edges of this I'll
24:05 get to it next week [ __ ]
24:08 that like get your ass in it start
24:12 building start playing start putting
24:14 [ __ ] together um someone can pin the the
24:17 Tik Tok okay I was on a podcast
24:20 today and they had the the same thoughts
24:23 about job
24:24 loss yeah that that there's going to be
24:28 this de
24:30 right and unfortunately because of our
24:33 [ __ ] news
24:36 media the decimation is the only thing
24:38 that's going to get
24:41 covered but what's going to happen is
24:44 some percentage of those people that
24:45 lose their jobs are going to go well
24:48 [ __ ] it I better learn AI if AI cost me
24:50 my job i' better go learn what this
24:52 thing is and those people are are going
24:55 to rise out of the ashes and come over
24:57 here to this other side and start to do
24:59 some really remarkable
25:02 [ __ ] but it's like there was a there was
25:04 a woman in the salon tonight named
25:06 Heather and she was a technologist and
25:07 she was saying I don't really get AI
25:09 it's like I love coding and I do coding
25:11 and I try to use AI for coding and it
25:13 just feels cold and it feels and she's
25:16 only using AI as an augmentation to what
25:18 she already knows and loves she loves to
25:20 code and she's good at coding and so her
25:24 use of AI to do the same thing she knows
25:27 and loves is is cold and disappointing
25:30 because it's not perfect it's janky it's
25:32 all that
25:34 stuff what we talked about tonight is
25:36 well I bet if she starts to explore
25:40 things that are not the core of who she
25:42 is maybe stuff that she didn't even
25:44 think she could ever
25:46 do write a
25:48 song make a movie whatever it might be
25:51 that's not coding that's not at her
25:55 core that maybe there's some magic out
25:57 there
25:59 and I just I like my my instinct is we
26:03 we did I think it was last week we did a
26:07 chat where chat GPT came up with this
26:10 new novel concept which which I
26:12 absolutely [ __ ] loved well I don't
26:13 know if it's new in novel it came up
26:15 with a concept I've never heard
26:17 before and it was talking about the
26:19 future of
26:21 Storytelling and it basically made this
26:24 hypothesis I said look at all of what's
26:26 going on in Ai and give me a new
26:29 hypothesis for
26:32 storytelling and it said the future of
26:35 Storytelling is going to see the death
26:37 of the the single
26:39 author right of the author the author of
26:42 a single
26:44 work that the value of producing a
26:46 single work is just going to diminish in
26:50 value
26:52 but the future of Storytelling is what
26:55 it what it coined
26:59 called emotional
27:01 architectures so that an author rather
27:04 than writing a book would come up with a
27:07 kind of language a kind of tone in
27:11 writing um stylesheets for how images
27:15 will be generated templates for how
27:17 songs will be generated um
27:22 um Frameworks for personas for creating
27:25 characters in this world will always be
27:27 created within certain
27:30 Frameworks and so what the author will
27:32 do is create the
27:33 framework where the audience can
27:36 co-create in that
27:40 world that's insane to me and like the
27:44 the the the author or the the Aur that I
27:48 was thinking about last week was Wes
27:51 Anderson right Wes Anderson's films are
27:54 they are their own world they have their
27:57 own look and feel they have on they cast
27:59 weird characters they dress them weird
28:01 they live in weird hotels in weird
28:04 cities they've got weird color
28:08 grading right there's a Wes Anderson
28:10 nness about those films he would be the
28:14 perfect person to create an emotional
28:17 architecture which is a whole framework
28:19 that you could create within there there
28:21 could be a metaverse that you enter but
28:24 there could also just be I'm going to
28:26 write stories and then I'm going to
28:28 bring those stories to life and those
28:30 characters are going to be Wes Anderson
28:32 like and the story is going to have a
28:34 Wes Anderson tone to it then we're going
28:37 to turn that into a film and then maybe
28:39 Wes Anderson even likes that and goes
28:41 and makes a film based on that
28:44 story but it's this whole world of
28:48 creativity and I could see that being a
28:50 whole ecosystem and a whole
28:54 economy and then all of a sudden I'm
28:56 like okay so we're going to lose
28:59 jobs for people that are making
29:01 individual pieces of work but we might
29:04 gain jobs in entire new economies that
29:07 we can't even imagine right
29:09 now and like those are the two
29:12 parallel counterveiling themes that I
29:15 see coming that there's this remarkable
29:18 amplification of capability for anyone
29:20 who chooses to have it and this [ __ ]
29:24 decimation of the way we used to work
29:29 and it's going to feel like the end of
29:30 the world and it's but it's not going to
29:32 be we're [ __ ] human we're resilient
29:34 we're going to respond to
29:36 this like one of the things that pisses
29:39 me off the most about how people are
29:41 talking about the impact of work is like
29:43 it's gonna cost one million
29:46 jobs okay understood how many is it
29:50 going to create well none it's going to
29:53 take them all
29:56 really there's not going to be new ways
29:59 of working that's going to require some
30:00 sort of
30:03 interaction I don't buy that I don't buy
30:05 it doesn't make any sense to
30:11 me I mean it's it's the literal
30:13 equivalent of if in the you know late
30:17 1800s you see the steam engine and
30:19 you're like
30:21 well I guess farmers are just going to
30:23 sit down on their bunks and
30:26 die no they
30:29 didn't they
30:32 left they left the
30:34 farm if you didn't need a 100 people
30:37 working to farm you only needed 10
30:38 because of the steam
30:40 engine those 90 where did they go did
30:43 they just stop and Whittle
30:47 no they went and they formed
30:51 cities what did they do in the cities
30:54 they invented the service
30:56 industry I'll make street meat I'll sell
31:01 my I'll buy a building and sell beds in
31:03 my
31:05 building right I'll polish your
31:09 shoes whole new economy that couldn't
31:11 have been imagined
31:19 before I find that tremendously exciting
31:22 but it's scary as
31:24 [ __ ] cuz we're
31:27 not we we don't
31:29 know like we don't know it could go
31:32 horribly wrong we had a discussion
31:34 tonight about Universal basic income and
31:37 you know someone was like I'm reading a
31:38 book right now and it sounds like they
31:40 just want us to take Universal basic
31:42 income so we stop working and they can
31:44 control
31:46 us um then why are all the farmers from
31:49 the 1800s Dead really good point Joker
31:52 that is true none of the none of the the
31:56 farmers or the city dwellers from the
31:58 late 1800s have survived to this day

34:13 said hey can I do this thing and then an
34:15 hour later I had an app published on the
34:17 App Store
34:22 what it's kind of
34:25 cool I still can't believe we aren't
34:28 screaming in amazement when we fly or
34:29 nearly at the speed of
34:31 sound yeah or in relative comfortably
34:34 chairs yeah exactly yeah I I
34:37 know well we see that we see that here
34:40 where I get all whiny because things
34:42 aren't perfect or things aren't fast
34:43 enough and I'm like wait I should
34:45 probably stop and take in the fact that
34:47 you know we now have a tool we now have
34:50 a tool this the thing that that just
34:52 absolutely boggles my mind it's people
34:56 like it's theft it's it's it's St from

35:01 artists died more than a hundred years

38:06 foolish to not let people do that so I I

38:17 one can spend

1:09:53 brains and it's this cool thing that you

1:09:58 presentation like here here's all the
1:10:00 elements we're going to create this
1:10:01 summer Pavilion it's made out of wood

1:10:04 organic it's inspired by these little
1:10:07 sketches here here's sort of its
1:10:08 relative scale to
1:10:11 people here's the
1:10:13 footing it's got misspellings in it
1:10:15 because it's ai's
1:10:18 janky and then she uploaded that and
1:10:20 said make that real and chat GPT did
1:10:23 that

1:10:49 carpenter and she just works with her
1:10:51 hands and she's never been able to
1:10:53 really visualize her ideas I don't I
1:10:56 don't know this woman from a ho in the
1:10:57 wall but I just thought like this is a
1:11:00 really interesting use
1:11:02 case of this new image
1:11:06 tool right there's thought behind it
1:11:10 it's not just squirting out the same old

1:11:13 doing and then she got to that and it's
1:11:18 like and so here's a question for you
1:11:21 let's say that this woman met some guy
1:11:24 at a party that works for the city and
1:11:26 he said oh you should apply for this
1:11:28 outdoor living space competition we're
1:11:31 doing and she's never applied for one of
1:11:34 those before and one of the requirements
1:11:36 is a sketch
1:11:38 document and she's never really sketched
1:11:42 before she just builds with her hands
1:11:44 but she's never really sketched before
1:11:45 and she puts this together in 15 minutes

1:11:54 she knows she can build this she's got
1:11:56 the skills to build it but yeah that's
1:11:58 kind of what she had in her head and
1:12:00 then she applies for that and then she
1:12:01 wins that business why is that a bad
1:12:05 thing is it relevant that it took
1:12:09 her not three days or three
1:12:14 weeks I don't think
1:12:16 so I just don't think
1:12:20 so but nothing is stopping me from
1:12:22 immediately copying her style yeah of

1:13:43 this number and your artwork will like
1:13:45 look like this cool style and they're
1:13:47 selling those there there's nothing
1:13:49 proprietary about them they're easy to
1:13:52 copy you could in fact you could just go
1:13:54 screen shot some of the outputs put it
1:13:57 in mid Journey have it describe it and
1:13:59 go make your own doesn't
1:14:01 like but that that would be easier now
1:14:04 imagine a site that had the the
1:14:06 equivalent of SRS for images and then
1:14:11 musical styles and then um you know
1:14:14 character Frameworks and location
1:14:18 types imagine all that in this
1:14:21 system and I as an artist could Define
1:14:25 all of those Frameworks and then anyone
1:14:27 could come in and play with my toys and
1:14:29 make their own content and go do
1:14:31 anything they want with their
1:14:33 content but maybe I charge them every
1:14:36 time there's a
1:14:39 generation or maybe they could sell
1:14:41 things within my
1:14:43 space and I get a cut and they get a
1:14:46 cut why not like I I think I think we're
