65. 16:20matter two two things happen in the salon tonight that are related and I and I think are important and and are are counterveiling
66. 16:34forces I don't quite know what the word counterveiling means but it's very poetic and I like it so I think it's
67. 16:48right he's still doing this wow oh this doesn't stop here here's the deal with this channel here's the deal with this channel
68. 16:57um some nights like last night it'll be two hours of time you can't get back most nights there's a solid 15 minutes where
69. 17:12you're like that was worth it last night wasn't one of those um it may not come as a surprise to you based on that comment I don't have an
70. 17:26agenda and I don't really give a [ __ ] whether I have an agenda here's the purpose of these lives I mean if you want to come here and
71. 17:37learn just come here night after night after night you'll learn but but the whole point of this isn't really about
72. 17:42what I'm talking about can be interesting very often not what this is really about is you just being in the conversation about
73. 17:52AI just kind of taking it in and while you're listening to me or put me in the background and be making pictures in in
74. 17:59open ai's new thing or over in mid Journey or making songs over here or figuring out how to prompt Manis chatting with people in the
75. 18:08comments and asking questions is you know if is he ever going to make a point you know that sort of [ __ ] this is about
76. 18:15the community it's about interacting and it's about just being in the conversation of AI so yeah I may not get
77. 18:21to anything tonight so yes I'm still doing this and I'll keep doing this for a while so so if you don't like it get out um
78. 18:31okay so two things happened tonight counterveiling forces or not not two things two themes emerge tonight that I that I think are
79. 18:41counterveiling themes um one of them was echoed by both Leah who I co-founded and co-host the salon with and and myself we we both felt this
80. 18:53and then a couple other people were talking about it too is that the the new image gen from chat GPT um is a big big big big big [ __ ] deal
81. 19:07it's a big [ __ ] deal now it's not perfect it's it's janky it doesn't always do [ __ ] right but it's a big [ __ ]
82. 19:15deal tonight for the first time I kind of felt like it is yeah it can't be that big I feel like it's in the neighborhood of as important
83. 19:31as chat GPT and here's why I feel like it's in that neighborhood that because it's visual because it makes images and
84. 19:43because it can make images that look like complete layouts and you can make magazine covers and print ads and crazy photos and character
85. 19:54consistency like there's just so many things that it does in the context of a coners ation that you really can't get your
86. 20:04head around it you can't believe it you can't believe like oh we can do that now and and people who've been in AI for a
87. 20:11while are like well you know you could you could do that stuff in Leonardo you know six months ago okay yeah but you
88. 20:17had to [ __ ] learn the interface of Leonardo and you had to go over there you had to be aware enough to go over
89. 20:22there and do that this is inside chat GPT it's just doing this magical kind of [ __ ] what happened I'm not I'm not showing
90. 20:32anything Brandon yeah um and so for the first time it feels to me like because it's visual people that have been not paying
91. 20:47attention to AI because it was all text for the most part like it made pictures but it it didn't compel them to go there
92. 20:55they're going to see these outputs and go I got to learn how to do this and they're going to go into chat GPT and
93. 21:00they're going to see what it does and they're going to have one of those face melting Kevin McAllister moments and I look at the
94. 21:11output of image gen and for the first time I viscerally felt this is going to cost people jobs now I think I think coding you know the
95. 21:25coding's been getting better and better and better I think I think coding jobs tech jobs we're going to start to see um
96. 21:31that industry you know hit um I think writing copyrighting things like that we've seen we've seen some impacts there
97. 21:40that's going to get more dramatic but there's something about the visual thing that that it just all of a sudden felt
98. 21:46like viscerally like this is going to cost jobs so that was one of the themes is that this is a big deal you've got to
99. 21:53pay attention to it the implications of it are are big and potentially devastating one theme the other theme was before we
100. 22:07started the salon we were talking and Adnan who was one of the guys that spoke that that is one of the
101. 22:14co-authors of the book um said oh I just launched my IOS app and I didn't know he had an IOS app but he just said I just launched my
102. 22:25ILS app and then Leah um from the the salon said oh I I spent four hours today and I I launched a print OnDemand brand
103. 22:36I was like wait what I didn't know you were doing that um and then there were a couple other people that were talking
104. 22:42about their projects and and the other theme that kind of emerged is that people who've been in this conversation back to the reason for
105. 22:53this whole Channel or the whole reason for this channel being in the conversation the people who've been in actively in
106. 23:01this AI conversation for some time are starting to do some really remarkable things and it's really remarkable things that are way outside
107. 23:12what their expertise was a year ago like way outside of it and so on one hand you've got this technology that's going to cost people
108. 23:24jobs and then on the other hand you've got these people who are like huh these tools can give me superpowers why don't
109. 23:33I just see what I can do with these superpowers and like oh [ __ ] I can build an IOS app and launch it oh [ __ ] I can
110. 23:40build a whole print on demand brand and launch the website in four hours that's what Leah did it's like and so like where my head is right
111. 23:54now is like you got to get off the [ __ ] Sidelines you got to get off the [ __ ] Sidelines if you if you're if you're
112. 24:01[ __ ] footing around AI if you're tiptoeing around the edges of this I'll get to it next week [ __ ] that like get your ass in it start
113. 24:11building start playing start putting [ __ ] together um someone can pin the the Tik Tok okay I was on a podcast
114. 24:20today and they had the the same thoughts about job loss yeah that that there's going to be this de right and unfortunately because of our
115. 24:33[ __ ] news media the decimation is the only thing that's going to get covered but what's going to happen is
116. 24:43some percentage of those people that lose their jobs are going to go well [ __ ] it I better learn AI if AI cost me
117. 24:50my job i' better go learn what this thing is and those people are are going to rise out of the ashes and come over
118. 24:57here to this other side and start to do some really remarkable [ __ ] but it's like there was a there was a woman in the salon tonight named
119. 25:05Heather and she was a technologist and she was saying I don't really get AI it's like I love coding and I do coding
120. 25:11and I try to use AI for coding and it just feels cold and it feels and she's only using AI as an augmentation to what
121. 25:18she already knows and loves she loves to code and she's good at coding and so her use of AI to do the same thing she knows
122. 25:26and loves is is cold and disappointing because it's not perfect it's janky it's all that stuff what we talked about tonight is
123. 25:36well I bet if she starts to explore things that are not the core of who she is maybe stuff that she didn't even think she could ever
124. 25:45do write a song make a movie whatever it might be that's not coding that's not at her core that maybe there's some magic out there
125. 25:59and I just I like my my instinct is we we did I think it was last week we did a chat where chat GPT came up with this
126. 26:09new novel concept which which I absolutely [ __ ] loved well I don't know if it's new in novel it came up with a concept I've never heard
127. 26:17before and it was talking about the future of Storytelling and it basically made this hypothesis I said look at all of what's
128. 26:26going on in Ai and give me a new hypothesis for storytelling and it said the future of Storytelling is going to see the death
129. 26:36of the the single author right of the author the author of a single work that the value of producing a
130. 26:46single work is just going to diminish in value but the future of Storytelling is what it what it coined called emotional
131. 27:01architectures so that an author rather than writing a book would come up with a kind of language a kind of tone in
132. 27:11writing um stylesheets for how images will be generated templates for how songs will be generated um um Frameworks for personas for creating
133. 27:24characters in this world will always be created within certain Frameworks and so what the author will do is create the
134. 27:33framework where the audience can co-create in that world that's insane to me and like the the the the author or the the Aur that I
135. 27:47was thinking about last week was Wes Anderson right Wes Anderson's films are they are their own world they have their
136. 27:56own look and feel they have on they cast weird characters they dress them weird they live in weird hotels in weird
137. 28:04cities they've got weird color grading right there's a Wes Anderson nness about those films he would be the
138. 28:13perfect person to create an emotional architecture which is a whole framework that you could create within there there
139. 28:21could be a metaverse that you enter but there could also just be I'm going to write stories and then I'm going to
140. 28:28bring those stories to life and those characters are going to be Wes Anderson like and the story is going to have a
141. 28:34Wes Anderson tone to it then we're going to turn that into a film and then maybe Wes Anderson even likes that and goes
142. 28:40and makes a film based on that story but it's this whole world of creativity and I could see that being a whole ecosystem and a whole
143. 28:53economy and then all of a sudden I'm like okay so we're going to lose jobs for people that are making individual pieces of work but we might
144. 29:03gain jobs in entire new economies that we can't even imagine right now and like those are the two parallel counterveiling themes that I
145. 29:14see coming that there's this remarkable amplification of capability for anyone who chooses to have it and this [ __ ]
146. 29:24decimation of the way we used to work and it's going to feel like the end of the world and it's but it's not going to
147. 29:32be we're [ __ ] human we're resilient we're going to respond to this like one of the things that pisses me off the most about how people are
148. 29:41talking about the impact of work is like it's gonna cost one million jobs okay understood how many is it
149. 29:50going to create well none it's going to take them all really there's not going to be new ways of working that's going to require some
150. 30:00sort of interaction I don't buy that I don't buy it doesn't make any sense to me I mean it's it's the literal
151. 30:13equivalent of if in the you know late 1800s you see the steam engine and you're like well I guess farmers are just going to
152. 30:23sit down on their bunks and die no they didn't they left they left the farm if you didn't need a 100 people
153. 30:36working to farm you only needed 10 because of the steam engine those 90 where did they go did they just stop and Whittle
154. 30:47no they went and they formed cities what did they do in the cities they invented the service industry I'll make street meat I'll sell
155. 31:00my I'll buy a building and sell beds in my building right I'll polish your shoes whole new economy that couldn't have been imagined
156. 31:18before I find that tremendously exciting but it's scary as [ __ ] cuz we're not we we don't know like we don't know it could go
157. 31:31horribly wrong we had a discussion tonight about Universal basic income and you know someone was like I'm reading a
158. 31:38book right now and it sounds like they just want us to take Universal basic income so we stop working and they can control
159. 31:46us um then why are all the farmers from the 1800s Dead really good point Joker that is true none of the none of the the
160. 31:55farmers or the city dwellers from the late 1800s have survived to this day great Point great point so to that end AI will kill us
161. 32:11all although hey not for nothing Joker maybe uh maybe we start rejuvenating ourselves and we will be here 150 years

169. 34:03human because of AI like as a direct result of AI I didn't think I could do this thing and then I went into chat JP T and I
170. 34:13said hey can I do this thing and then an hour later I had an app published on the App Store what it's kind of
171. 34:25cool I still can't believe we aren't screaming in amazement when we fly or nearly at the speed of sound yeah or in relative comfortably
172. 34:33chairs yeah exactly yeah I I know well we see that we see that here where I get all whiny because things
173. 34:41aren't perfect or things aren't fast enough and I'm like wait I should probably stop and take in the fact that
174. 34:47you know we now have a tool we now have a tool this the thing that that just absolutely boggles my mind it's people
175. 34:55like it's theft it's it's it's St from the artists well okay most of the artists died more than a hundred years
176. 35:04ago right most of what these things have been trained on most of it is the collective intelligence of
177. 35:13humanity right the collective output of humanity and and there's a very small percentage of those people that are
178. 35:18alive today that are like they stole my [ __ ] but we've taken all the [ __ ] all of the creative output of
179. 35:30humanity all all is not quite the right word some percentage I sound like Larry David some percentage some percentage of the output of
180. 35:40humanity and we've squashed it into this little gold disc that we can just chat into and outomes pictures and music and art and
181. 35:56words and new Shakespearean sonnets that have never existed before this [ __ ] insane [Music]

189. 37:51Valves and because these tools are so capable anyone who's got even a modum of ambition is going to be able to generate um value in the
190. 38:03economy um and and it it would be foolish to not let people do that so I I don't buy that purely dystopian

351. 1:10:06sketches here here's sort of its relative scale to people here's the footing it's got misspellings in it because it's ai's
352. 1:10:17janky and then she uploaded that and said make that real and chat GPT did that that's [ __ ] brilliant and what did that take her
353. 1:10:32five minutes M let's say it took her half an hour I'm I'm guessing it's five minutes but let's say it's half an hour she had some
354. 1:10:44idea maybe she's got drafting skills I don't know that she does maybe she's a carpenter and she just works with her
355. 1:10:51hands and she's never been able to really visualize her ideas I don't I don't know this woman from a ho in the
356. 1:10:57wall but I just thought like this is a really interesting use case of this new image tool right there's thought behind it
357. 1:11:09it's not just squirting out the same old [ __ ] everyone else is doing and then she got to that and it's
358. 1:11:17like and so here's a question for you let's say that this woman met some guy at a party that works for the city and
359. 1:11:25he said oh you should apply for this outdoor living space competition we're doing and she's never applied for one of
360. 1:11:33those before and one of the requirements is a sketch document and she's never really sketched before she just builds with her hands
361. 1:11:43but she's never really sketched before and she puts this together in 15 minutes this little sketch here and then she puts this together and
