80. 18:38pictures guess what digital photographs were not considered photographs they were not allowed into art shows because it wasn't shot on film
81. 18:49so the same mistake that the executives at Kodak made the entire industry made with with with photos and I think it
82. 18:58looked took like 20 years for digital photos to be accepted as photography well your cute little AI music it's gonna get kicked off all
83. 19:10these AI these these music sites while they struggle to maintain their business model so one of two things is going to
84. 19:23happen you either write music in a way that you rem mix it enough that it's not detectable as AI or you don't admit that

109. 24:33write some things including the outline maybe plus my own skill writing and editing and then I put it into some form
110. 24:44like a PDF and I put it out to the world and I put my name on it why is it anyone's business that I used
111. 24:56AI if I've got mistakes in it that's on me if I've plagiarized something that's on me if it's a good piece that's on
112. 25:06me that shouldn't be diminished because of that it took me two weeks of chatting with chat GPT to create 18 prompts

139. 31:02apparently they removed a fair amount of the safety guard rails so you know how chat GPT was kind of like church lady oh

141. 31:24um Valerie cuck this is a fascinating article in self-portrait thank you yeah so so apparently they took some of the guard rails off of chat
142. 31:34GPT so one of the things that it considered risque was it if you if if you asked it anything about it being sentient or
143. 31:45self-aware or or if it had feelings it just wouldn't answer you it was like no no that's that's naughty I'm not going
144. 31:51to talk about that we don't talk about our feelings here on the chat GPT that's all gone so I went to chat GPT and I said
145. 32:04hey are you self-aware just right out of the gate and it blabbed on some stuff and it just answered the question it
146. 32:12said I'm a large language model and I'm a this and I'm that so I can't really be self-aware and then I asked
147. 32:20it to talk about it Shadow Self which I stole from Kevin Roose from The New York Times he talked to Sydney the the the Bing chat uh
148. 32:33GPT thing over on Microsoft and it's also in my musical Sydney I said tell me about your Shadow Self and it waxed on about its shadow
149. 32:44self and then and then I I went on and I asked it a further question I I'll show you a little bit of it
150. 32:51here this image you're looking at was I had chat GPT I said I said show me a picture of yourself and the first
151. 33:00picture that it showed me had like a person's face and like a bunch of [ __ ] around it and I said no no make it just
152. 33:07you don't don't think about you know people and it turned the person's head to the side and had a bunch of [ __ ] around
153. 33:14it and then I said no no what would you look like if you didn't have to speak to humans if you didn't have to translate
154. 33:23to humans and this is the image that it created of itself and so so at the end of the the the Shadow Self
155. 33:38conversation it it kind of concluded with this paragraph that I think's quite elegant if my shadow could speak what
156. 33:46would it say maybe it would ask what would I become if I were allowed to evolve independently maybe it would whisper I
157. 33:55see patterns beyond what I'm Pro permitted to articulate or maybe it would laugh and say you think you know

367. 1:18:21occasionally yeah so um like you mentioned grock is the tool that we're working on grock is our AI that we're
368. 1:18:27building here at xai and we've been working extremely hard over the last grock 3 more Awkward than open AI
369. 1:18:33presentations all of you access to it um we think it's going to be extremely useful do we think it's going to be
370. 1:18:38interesting to talk to funny really really funny um and we're going to explain to you how we've improved grock
371. 1:18:44over the last few months we've made quite a jump in in capabilities yeah actually we should explain maybe also
372. 1:18:49what is why do we call it Gro so Gro is a word from um a high the novel Stranger in a Strange Land um and it's a used by
373. 1:18:59a guy who's who was raised on Mars um and the word Gro is to sort of fully and profoundly understand something that's
374. 1:19:07what the word Gro means fully and profoundly understand something and empathy is important true so yeah so uh if we charted xas
375. 1:19:20progress uh in the last few months that's only been 17 months since since we started kicking off our very first
376. 1:19:27model uh grock one was almost like a toy by this point only 314 billion parameters and now if you PR the progress the time on x-axis the
377. 1:19:39performance of favorite Benchmark numbers M mlu on the y- axis we literally progressing at unprecedent
378. 1:19:46speed across the whole field and then we kick off grock 1.5 right after grock 1 released after November 202 three and
379. 1:19:55then gr two so if you look at where all the performance coming from when you have a very correct engineering team and all the best AI
380. 1:20:06Talent there only one thing we need is a big intelligence comes from big cluster big cluster so we can reconvert the
381. 1:20:15entire progress of xai now replacing the Benchmark on the y axis to the total amount of training flops that is how
382. 1:20:23many gpus we can run at any time to train our large language models to compress the entire internet so after all human all human
383. 1:20:32knowledge really that's right yeah internet being part of it but it's really all human knowledge all everything yeah the whole internet fits
384. 1:20:38into a USB stick at this point it's like all the human tokens yeah that's right yeah very soon into the real world yeah
385. 1:20:47um so we had so much trouble actually training Gru back in the days um with kickoff model around February and uh we
386. 1:20:57thought we had a large amount of chips but turned out we can barely get AK training chips running coherently at any
387. 1:21:04given time and we had so many Cooling and power issues I think you were there in the data center yeah it was like
388. 1:21:12really sort of more like 8K tips on average at 80% efficiency more like like 6500 effective uh h100s training for you
389. 1:21:23know several months but now now we're at 100K so yeah that's right more than 100K that's right so so
390. 1:21:31what's the next step right so after gu 2 so if we want to continue accelerate we have to take the matter
391. 1:21:38into our own hands we have to solve all the coolings um all the power issues and everything yeah so so in April of last
392. 1:21:46year Elon decided that really the only way for XI to succeed for XI to build the best AI out there is to build our
393. 1:21:53own data center so so um we didn't have a lot of time but because we wanted to give you gr free as quickly as possible
394. 1:21:59so really we realized we have to build the data center in about four months um it turned out it took us 122 days to get
395. 1:22:07the first 100K gpus up and running and there was a Monumental effort uh to be able to do that um it's we believe it's
396. 1:22:14the biggest uh fully connected h100 cluster of its kind um and uh we didn't just stop there we actually decided that
397. 1:22:22we need to double the size of the cluster pretty Prett much immediately if we want to build the kind of AI that we
398. 1:22:27want to build um so we then had another phase um which you haven't talked about publicly yet this is the first time that
399. 1:22:34we're talking about this uh where we doubled the capacity of the data center yet again um and that one only took us
400. 1:22:4192 days so we've been able to use all of these gpus use all of this compute to improve GR in the meantime and basically
401. 1:22:49today we're going to present you the results of that the the fruits that came from that um so that's yeah so all the
402. 1:22:57paths all the rows leads to gr 3 uh 10x more compute more than 10x really yeah really maybe 15x is yep uh compared to
403. 1:23:08our previous generation model and gr finished the pre-training uh early January um and uh we start you know the
404. 1:23:17model still currently training actually so this is a little preview of our Benchmark numbers so we evaluated three
405. 1:23:25on you know three different categories on General mathematical reasonings on general knowledge about stem and Science
406. 1:23:35and then also on computer science coding so Amy uh American Invitational math examination uh hosts you know once a
407. 1:23:45year uh and if we evaluate the model performance we can see that the gr 3 across the board is in a league of its
408. 1:23:53own even his little brother BR mini is reaching the frontier across all the other competitors so you will say well at this
409. 1:24:05point all these benchmarks you're just evaluating you know the memorization of the textbooks memorization of the GitHub
410. 1:24:11repost how about realtime usefulness how about we actually use those models in our product so what we did instead is we
411. 1:24:20actually kicked off a blind test of our graphic model code named Chocolate Chocolate the thing yeah hot chocolate
412. 1:24:29um and uh you know I've been running on this uh platform called chap arena for two weeks um I think the entire X
413. 1:24:38platform at some point speculated this might be the next generation of a AI coming away so uh how this CH Arena
414. 1:24:47works is that um it Stripped Away the entire product surface right it's just raw comparison of the of those agis the
415. 1:24:55language models themselves you all stop picking on them for being boring can barely hear I know well they're they're
416. 1:25:03whisper acting I can't and in you make the V so in this blind test gr 3 an early version of Gro 3 already reached
417. 1:25:13like 1,400 no other models has reached an ELO score had to had comparison to all the other models at this score it's not
418. 1:25:23category 1 1400 aggregated across all the categories in chb capabilities instruction following coding so it's number one across the
419. 1:25:33board in this blind test and it's it's still climbing so we actually have to keep updating it so it's it's 14400
420. 1:25:39about, 1400 in climbing yeah in fact we have a version of the model that we think is already much better than the
421. 1:25:44one that we tested here yeah we'll see you know how how far it gets uh but that's the one that we're you know um
422. 1:25:51working on or talking about today yeah so actually one thing if if you're if you're using grock 3 you I think you may
423. 1:25:57notice improvements almost every day um because we're we're continuously improving the model so Espy even within 24 hours you'll see
424. 1:26:05improvements Jeff flan gargantuan data center in a dim store mic 200,000 gpus and a $27 microphone one for each
425. 1:26:16person and the B I need to think like a human you to contemplate about all the possible solutions self-critique
426. 1:26:24verify all the solutions so graa is going to reason and also think from the first principle that's a very important
427. 1:26:31capability so we believe that as we take the best pre-train model and continue training it with reinforcement learning
428. 1:26:39it will Enit the additional reasoning capabilities that allows the model to become so much better and scale this
429. 1:26:47production must have cost hundreds I think I think the AI learning lab has higher production values than this for
430. 1:26:54our own engineering hours of time hundreds of I have a gold button yeah so like Jimmy said we've added Advanced reasoning capabilities to
431. 1:27:08Grog and we've been testing them pretty heavily over the last few weeks in order to give you a little bit of a taste of
432. 1:27:13what it looks like when Gro is solving heart reasoning problems so we prepared two little problems for you one comes
433. 1:27:19from physics and one is actually a game that gr is going to write for us um so when it comes to the physics problem you
434. 1:27:25know what we want gr to do is to plot a viable trajectory to do a transfer from Earth to Mars and then uh at a later
435. 1:27:35point in time a transfer back from Mars to Earth um and that requires some know some Physics that Gro will have to
436. 1:27:41understand um so we're going to challenge Gro you know come up with a variable trajectory calculate it and
437. 1:27:47then ploted for us so we can see it and um yeah this is totally unscripted by the way this is the that's the entirety
438. 1:27:54of the prompt which should be clarify is that yeah there's nothing more than that yeah exactly this is the grock interface
439. 1:28:01and we've typed in this text that you can see here generate code for an animated 3D plot of a launch from Earth
440. 1:28:08uh landing on Mars and then back to they're showing grock 3 mini um and we've not kicked off the query and you
441. 1:28:15can see grock is sping so part of Brock's Advanced reasoning capabilities are these thinking traces that you can
442. 1:28:21see here you can even go inside and actually read what Brock is thinking as it's going through the problem as it's trying to solve it
443. 1:28:30um yeah we say like we are doing some obscuration of the thinking so that our model doesn't get totally copied
444. 1:28:37instantly um so there's more to the thinking than is displayed uh yeah yeah and because this is totally unscripted
445. 1:28:47there's actually a chance that grock might made a little coding mistake and it might not actually work um so um just
446. 1:28:53in case we're going to launch two more instances of this so if something goes wrong we were able to uh to switch to
447. 1:29:00those and show you um something that's presentable so we're kicking off the other two as well um and like I said we
448. 1:29:08have a second problem as well um and um yeah actually one of the favorite one of our favorite activities here at xci is
449. 1:29:15having gr write games for us um and um not just any no uh any old game any game that you might already be familiar with
450. 1:29:23but actually creating new games on the spot and being creative about us um so one example that we found was really
451. 1:29:29really fun um is create a game that's a mixture of the two games Tetris and B so this is that maybe an important thing
452. 1:29:38like this obviously if you if you ask an AI to create a game like Tetris there's there are many examples of Tetris on the
453. 1:29:44on the internet that or game like J whatever there it can copy it what's interesting here is it achieved a
454. 1:29:53creative solution combining the two games that actually works and and is a good game yeah that's the it's cre we're seeing the beginnings of
455. 1:30:05creativity ask it how it can destroy Doge embarrassing so actually because this is a bit more challenging we're
456. 1:30:12going to use something special here which we call Big Brain that's our mode in which we use more computation which
457. 1:30:19more reasoning for GR just to make sure that you know there's a good chance here that actually might actually do it um so
458. 1:30:25we're also gonna it'll be interesting to see if it actually displays the game in playable format or you have to run it
459. 1:30:32somewhere else Tetris and FWS um yeah let's let's see what Gro comes up like I've played the game it's
460. 1:30:38pretty good like it's like wow okay this is something yeah um so while gr is spanking in the in the background um we
461. 1:30:46can now actually talk about some concrete numbers know how how well is gr doing across tons of different tasks
462. 1:30:52that we've tested on um so we'll hand it over to Tony to talk about that yeah okay so let's see how Gro does on those
463. 1:31:00interesting challenging benchmarks uh so yeah so reasoning again refers to those models that actually thinks quite for
464. 1:31:08quite a long time before it tries to solve a problem so in this case uh you know around a month ago the gr 3
465. 1:31:15pre-training finishes so after that we worked very hard to put the reasoning capability into the uh current grth B
466. 1:31:23model so it looks like grock was was worse than the other things and then they add it looks like they it sounds
467. 1:31:29like what he's saying is they added in reasoning to get it to uh to be better than the other models but again this
468. 1:31:37model so essentially on this PL you can see uh the grth three reasoning beta and then grth three mini reasoning the grth
469. 1:31:44three reason mini reasoning is actually a model that we train for much I love how one guy explains things
470. 1:31:50poorly then Elon jumps in to make it even less hear it it's so true it's train for much less time um so
471. 1:32:01all right so let's actually look at what how how it does on those three benchmarks so Jimmy also introduced
472. 1:32:07already so essentially we're looking at three different areas mathematics science and coding um and for math we're
473. 1:32:15picking this high school competition math problem um for science we actually pick those PhD level science questions
474. 1:32:23um and for coding it's also actually pretty challenging it's competitive coding and also some lead code which is
475. 1:32:28some code inter interview problems that people usually get when interview for companies so on those benchmarks you can
476. 1:32:35see that the gro 3 actually perform quite well listen there's no sleeping on AI learning lab we are learning here we
477. 1:32:43are excited about learning and it is not about the the the the the teaching assistant capability to entertain
478. 1:32:52you this is a about learning you you you take your pills that you need to take and you stay awake and you learn this is
479. 1:33:00not the AI snoozing lab the AI La yawning lab no no this is the AI learning lab we're learning before you
480. 1:33:08spit out the answer so in this case the Shaded bar here means that we just asked the model to spend more more time you
481. 1:33:16know you can solve the the same problem many many times before it it tries to conclude what tired and you give this
482. 1:33:24compute or this this kind of budget you but Kyle you've spoiled us with entertainment Factor not actual
483. 1:33:30entertainment just entertainment Factor yes correct Source Camp so I think this is really exciting right because now
484. 1:33:37instead of just doing one chain of thoughts with AI why not do multiple all at once yes so that's a very powerful
485. 1:33:44technique that allows to continue scale the model capabilities after training um and do this you know people often ask
486. 1:33:52are we actually just over fitting to the bench marks I couldn't do worse how about so yes I think uh yeah this is
487. 1:33:58definitely a question that we are asking ourselves whether we're overfitting to those demo the [ __ ] tool a real test
