6:41 Shaman spoke he's got a uh an animation
6:45 company out of Boulder
6:47 called rise r y z is that it yeah and he
6:53 worked at Pixar for like eight years or
6:55 12 years and uh just went deep deep deep
7:00 into storytelling and narrative and 80
7:03 people in the salon was crazy I know it
7:05 was great wasn't it Kelly it was just it
7:08 was just it was like a ton of people
7:11 were there on time and then people just
7:12 kept trickling in I think we had like 49
7:16 RSVPs by like you know an hour before
7:19 the salon and then we had 80 people
7:23 there like when do you get more people
7:26 than
7:28 RSVP and I guess that's because we've
7:31 got we've now got we're just shy of a
7:34 th000 people in the AI Salon community
7:36 and then we have about 1,000 people on
7:38 the Meetup so I had 49 RSVPs for the
7:40 Meetup so I assume the rest came from
7:43 from the salon but it was a really good

9:32 and how you got to do it right and story
9:36 told right you know can support anything
9:38 and has longevity and you can do all
9:40 sorts of cool [ __ ] with
9:42 it and if you're just
9:46 making
9:48 stuff you're now competing with everyone
9:51 can make stuff so what rises above
9:53 authenticity narrative things that
9:56 resonate with people Humanity
10:00 that's going to be the stuff that rises
10:01 above the noise so that was that was

10:18 strategist at at Google on the content

10:32 and I guess serves an an advisory role
10:34 to Riso r y zo which is an animation
10:39 house but they're like learning about Ai
10:42 and they're using it for ideation

10:54 of the authors of the book said that our

11:54 tonight cuz I I asked him after he was
11:56 talking about you know there they're
12:00 making a short right now an animated
12:02 short and then they're going to do an a
12:05 featurelength
12:06 um animated
12:09 film and then he said after the film's
12:12 made then he thinks that he's going to
12:14 lean really heavy onto AI to do like all
12:17 of the brand
12:18 extensions right so games and 3D worlds
12:22 and music and just all the [ __ ] that
12:25 goes with a film
12:27 right and he cuz he he was s he was
12:30 basically
12:31 implying or not implying he was
12:34 basically
12:35 saying some version of the The Narrative
12:38 the story is sacred
12:41 ground and that should be the the the
12:44 the the Hallowed Ground of humans like
12:46 whatever tools they use like the you
12:48 know that should be the one with the
12:49 hand the the fingerprints on on the
12:52 work and then all this stuff that comes
12:54 after it there he was like yeah that's

12:57 that but that's that's sort of how he

14:15 1995 um and I just I just put some
14:18 historical context to oh can't see
14:21 me I put some historical context to all
14:25 this stuff going on with the with AI
14:27 right now and so my my essay open opens
14:30 the book up it's the first essay in the
14:33 book to kind of Tee It Up and then
14:35 everybody's kind of talking about this
14:38 AI stuff and we we also we set a goal
14:40 for ourselves to write and publish it in
14:43 a month we didn't hit that but we did
14:45 hit about a month and three weeks which
14:47 is pretty amazing did you publish it on
14:50 Amazon
14:53 yep yes we
14:55 did so that's kind of
14:58 fun

15:13 little search box there

15:25 that a little bit why is it why is

15:36 sipper so this seems like a very very
15:38 interesting idea I don't quite know the
15:40 value of it
15:42 yet like like a lot of this stuff I
15:46 again this is going to be 2024 I think
15:49 is um these companies are just going to
15:52 keep
15:54 launching new
15:57 AI either features or are entirely new
16:01 things that we've never seen anything
16:03 like it before and we're not going to
16:04 know how to use this stuff for
16:07 years how much labor will be
16:12 AI by year for the next 10 years how
16:16 much labor won't be an AI robot in
16:21 2034 I don't
16:27 know it's a really interesting
16:30 question I think it's a question
16:35 that is couched in
16:39 pessimism and not necessarily that
16:41 you're P pessimistic but when you say
16:44 how many jobs will be lost to
16:48 AI why do you not phrase it how many
16:51 jobs will be generated by
16:56 AI well because we can't imagine that
17:01 right how many jobs were lost by
17:05 electricity how many jobs were lost by
17:07 the steam engine but how many were
17:11 gained a lot it just changes everything
17:14 changed everything so it's going to do
17:16 that can you please tell us the
17:17 significance of 1995 to you
17:21 sure
17:26 um
17:27 so
17:34 1995 for me was just it was it was my
17:38 personal entry point
17:42 into the worldwide web well actually 94
17:45 was my entry point um but 95 is
17:49 when
17:51 um ship broke loose let's put it that
17:56 way
17:57 um
17:59 okay so and and this is a this is a bit
18:02 of what the the chapter of the book is
18:04 about but I'm happy to happy to talk
18:05 about
18:06 it so when I was in seventh grade in
18:13 1977 I walked into
18:17 my 7eventh grade math
18:20 class
18:22 and every desk had a computer on it
18:26 Radio Shack trs8 for for the
18:29 for those nerds in for those old nerds
18:32 in the Channel Radio Shack trs8 one on
18:36 each
18:38 desk
18:41 and the first day we went in there we
18:44 learned the L print command which if you
18:46 know basic lprint is you you say l print
18:51 and then it whatever you put in quotes
18:53 shows up on
18:54 screen and then you can do multiple ones
18:57 of those so so we learned one command on
19:01 the first day and So within 20 minutes
19:04 of learning that command my buddy
19:06 Scott had created an animated rocket it
19:10 was like a Saturn 5 rocket out of asy
19:13 characters it's like space space space
19:15 space space space you know asterisk for
19:18 the point you know and then we just made
19:20 an animated rocket within like 20
19:22 minutes we had a rocket that like went
19:24 up the screen and the smoke went like
19:26 this and and everyone else was was like
19:29 trying to just like you know do math and
19:31 we were like animating a rocket and I
19:33 was like
19:37 woo
19:38 and the more I learned about that
19:41 machine the more I realized holy [ __ ]
19:44 [ __ ] this is like the next printing
19:46 press like this
19:48 is like this changes things but what I
19:51 also knew was that Steve Jobs and wnc
19:54 and Bill Gates and the Microsoft
19:56 Founders were already on the covers of
20:00 magazines
20:04 and I got really bummed out because I
20:08 knew
20:12 that those Technologies do not come
20:15 along very often and if you miss it you
20:17 miss
20:19 it
20:22 and so so I kind of just went through
20:25 high school and my college Years
20:27 assuming
20:29 that I would never see that just you
20:31 know kind of having this sadness of
20:33 having missed that and then in
20:36 1994 I discovered the worldwide web I
20:40 didn't discover I mean I stumbled upon
20:42 it Tim burner Lee created
20:46 it and I learned at enough HTML to
20:52 create Urban desires which was an online
20:56 magazine and it was an art and culture
20:58 magazine
20:59 magazine and that's a sidequest drive by
21:01 the way that's 45 megabytes of goodness
21:04 in a lovely little
21:07 cartridge
21:10 um and so I learned enough HTML to put
21:13 together that magazine and I uploaded
21:16 these files to some computer in
21:19 California with my dialup modem I didn't
21:22 know what the [ __ ] I was
21:23 doing and 3 weeks later Urban desires
21:28 there was a full page article of it
21:29 written about in
21:31 Liberation in
21:33 Paris 3 weeks after I put it on a
21:36 computer in California and all of a
21:39 sudden it just it [ __ ] smashed me in
21:41 the face what the internet
21:43 was and I was like holy [ __ ] the world
21:47 just changed nobody knows it
21:49 yet geography just collapsed time just
21:53 collapsed right it doesn't take you 3
21:57 Days To messenger something to
21:59 Paris you send it to California then
22:02 someone in Paris reads it and they have
22:04 enough time to understand what it is
22:06 take screenshots of it write a newspaper
22:08 article have it published in a newspaper
22:10 3 weeks later holy [ __ ] the world just
22:17 changed the other thing that the
22:19 worldwide web did was it put a simple
22:22 interface on top of this really
22:24 complicated thing called the internet
22:26 which prior to the web was all command
22:29 line you had FTP servers and gopher
22:32 servers and Library systems that you
22:34 would log into and then you know type
22:38 command lines and you would have to type
22:40 slel and it would list a list of
22:42 commands sound familiar well wait a
22:44 minute isn't that how you do mid Journey
22:47 yeah
22:48 exactly mid Journey right now is a
22:51 visual tool that you make pictures by
22:54 typing in command line
22:57 functions if your immediate thought is
23:00 isn't that [ __ ] stupid you're correct
23:03 you win you can make money
23:08 with so the the worldwide web was was a
23:11 simplification layer of a decades old
23:16 remarkable technology sitting underneath
23:19 right the worldwide web made the
23:20 internet this click click click click
23:23 click click
23:24 click chat
23:27 GPT did the same thing for machine
23:29 learning and Ai and it did it in
23:33 November December so like when I
23:35 discovered when I published my thing
23:36 when I had my big
23:37 Epiphany in
23:40 1995 I actually had it in 1994 and then
23:43 I started agency.com which was one of
23:45 the first digital agencies and so that
23:47 that took off in
23:48 '95 and so with um with this AI stuff I
23:55 was playing around with um image
23:58 generation tools stable diffusion and
24:00 dream booth and then chat GPT came out
24:03 and I'm like holy [ __ ] this is one of
24:04 those I had a big Epiphany and then I
24:07 started this Channel and I started the
24:09 AI salon and I started a m a newsletter
24:13 and I started thinking about how I'm
24:16 going to completely reinvent my company
24:18 Story vine and here we are a year later
24:20 and you know so anyway that's it that's
24:24 the significance is we are at the very
24:27 beginning an incredibly rare like to be
24:30 on the
24:32 planet to be on the planet and be aware
24:34 enough of AI to
24:36 sit with some old dude on Tik tock on a
24:41 Tuesday night at
24:44 [ __ ] what time is it it's 11:30 in
24:47 New York City right
24:48 now so it's 8:30 in California
24:52 11:30 to be aware enough to sit in here
24:55 and think I I think I got to pay
24:56 attention to this
24:59 you are in incred like it is an
25:02 incredibly thin slice of
25:05 History to be at the beginning of one of
25:08 these movements why I go live every
25:12 night I know I say it's because of
25:17 you it's not it is it's
25:24 um I got to keep my head in the
25:27 game
25:29 I got to keep my head in the game but
25:31 why Kyle you're not going to miss
25:33 anything if you're out of it for a week
25:36 yeah you
25:37 will and it's going to accelerate so
25:39 fast that it's going to be hard we are
25:41 living in Wild times we're living in

25:44 you here's the other thing about the the
25:46 comparison to 95 and 2023
25:52 is the worldwide web to get to 100
25:55 million users took six years
26:00 chat gbt took six
26:04 weeks and the core functionality of the
26:07 worldwide web was the
26:17 hyperlink that was
26:19 it they added other [ __ ] to
26:23 it you know like you can call database
26:26 [ __ ] and you know pick pictures and
26:28 sizes and then they did CSS and then
26:31 they did mobile
26:32 [ __ ] but the core breakthrough was
26:40 this the core breakthrough of machine
26:42 learning and AI was this thing called
26:44 the Transformer that no one could see
26:47 and a lot of people didn't really think
26:49 was that big a
26:51 deal until it was and then all of the
26:55 tools that we're playing all the
26:56 generative AI tools that we're playing
26:57 with with right now for the most part
27:00 are leveraging the Transformer this one
27:03 piece of technology that Google invented
27:04 in
27:06 2017 and so they've spent the last five
27:10 six
27:11 years capturing data jamming it into
27:15 machine learning
27:16 models through the Transformer
27:20 architecture and open AI did gpt1
27:24 gpt2 gpt2 was I think 28 or 20
27:29 2018 gpt3 was
27:33 2020 gpt3 was out for 2 years you could
27:36 do chat GPT [ __ ] for two years before
27:39 chat GPT came out nobody gave a
27:43 [ __ ] chat
27:45 gbt took all the buttons away and just
27:48 made it a search box here's a box just
27:51 like Google type [ __ ] in
27:53 there what do you think about neuralink
27:57 um I heard that one of the first human
28:01 got their implant today or
28:04 yesterday
28:06 um you know what's funny about
28:10 neurolink I heard about
28:14 neurolink probably close to a year
28:16 before chat GPT came
28:19 out and I heard Elon Musk talking about
28:22 it and I heard him talking
28:26 about spe speed of interface right speed
28:31 of just how incredibly unefficient it is
28:34 to tap on the screen like you know like
28:38 the light has to go into your eyes get
28:39 processed by your brain your brain has
28:42 to go I'm going to push a button and
28:44 then it comes down your arm and it moves
28:46 muscles in your finger and your arm and
28:47 then you go toward the phone and you do
28:49 that and then software does what it does
28:52 it's like it's just this massively
28:55 long thing and if you put in your brain
28:58 it's
28:59 instant and before I got my head around
29:04 AI I'm like so what like so an app
29:07 doesn't
29:10 launch you know for for like 500
29:13 milliseconds longer does that really
29:15 [ __ ]
29:18 matter and now I'm looking at generative
29:21 Ai and I'm going well [ __ ] yes it
29:26 matters cuz they already there's there's
29:28 a there's a disabled a uh paraplegic in
29:33 Italy spinal injury from a motorcycle AC
29:36 accident couldn't walk for 12
29:39 years they did an fmri of his brain and
29:43 told him to think about moving his legs
29:45 and they trained one of these models on
29:48 the data from his brain here's where
29:52 he's not thinking about moving his legs
29:53 here's where he is thinking about moving
29:55 his legs and then they stuck electrodes
29:57 in his back and a Bluetooth
29:59 connector just like your little airpod
30:02 that that technology from his brain down
30:06 to his legs and now he's
30:10 walking well that latency the the
30:13 latency of Bluetooth is too much right
30:16 so so if you could get that latency even
30:19 tighter he would walk better so all of a
30:22 sudden I start to see you know instant
30:25 translation instant Babel Fish right
30:27 stick fish in your ear listen to all the
30:29 languages we've got that right now but
30:31 imagine if there were no latency if it
30:33 were
30:45 instant I want to have a conversation
30:48 where I talk in English and then you
30:49 respond in some random language and keep
30:52 changing the languages every time I say
30:56 something

31:39 line at a time that's what this feels

31:46 English and then I want you to respond
31:47 in some random language and I want you
31:49 to keep changing the languages every
31:51 time I
31:54 talk sure I can do that go ahead with
31:57 your sentence in
32:00 English Abracadabra as I speak I
32:15 create I live life out loud and make a
32:18 huge difference where I show

32:32 my time and focus means it
32:48 matters

32:53 painful right but not for nothing

33:02 with chat GPT on my phone or Pi or with
33:05 any one of these things you know coming

33:19 neurolink
33:20 is I think we're
33:23 we're there there was one of the one of
33:25 the questions at Davos
33:28 one of the one of the moderators on the
33:31 I I don't know if it was the Sam Alman
33:33 panel it might have been another
33:36 panel one of the moderators said how do
33:40 we deal with the problem of
33:43 AI and the guy on the stage was like why
33:46 is it a
33:48 problem like why are you framing it like
33:53 that so I think when when people hear
33:55 about neuralink they go
33:58 to oh the you know they're going to
34:00 control us they go to the dystopian
34:02 weird ass [ __ ]
34:05 future well what about people with
34:08 spinal cord injuries and brain injuries
34:12 and you know severe dysfunction and
34:15 severe um conditions that a technology
34:19 like that can
34:20 fix that's where it's going to
34:26 start
34:28 people with MLS that
34:30 can't their brains are active and
34:32 they're [ __ ] trapped in their
34:34 bodies they're going to be able to
34:40 talk and with something like
34:45 neurolink so
34:48 like I guess it's just I guess it's just
34:51 human nature and I guess it's it's a bit
34:53 of a reflection of the of the
34:59 the political climate we've we've um let
35:02 ourselves be manipulated into in the
35:04 past
35:05 decade we we've chosen just like we
35:08 chose to give all our data away to
35:10 Facebook and Google we've chosen to let
35:12 ourselves be polarized like a bunch of

35:19 baboons and so I suppose it makes sense
35:21 that when something scary comes along
35:23 that's technological you go oh it's evil
35:26 it's going to kill us
35:28 how do we deal with the problem of
35:31 AI well that's not what this Channel's
35:33 about this Channel's about AI is coming
35:38 whether you demonize it or not in fact
35:41 AI is here I just spoke Russian and
35:45 Hindi and
35:48 Spanish AI is
35:54 here so you can sit on the [ __ ]
35:56 sidelines and piss and moan and what are
35:59 we going to do about the problem of AI
36:01 or you can go what do these tools do
36:04 what are they good at what are they bad
36:05 at where are the boundaries if this got
36:08 better what would be possible holy

36:17 community in the AI salon and in this
36:18 channel that show up here a lot what
36:21 they're discovering is that as you dig
36:24 deeper into this thing like they like
