37. 8:56one just rolling by it was just amazing amazing anyone who sort of cranks at that level is just is just amazing so

39. 9:21inspiring night I mean I wanted to come here and talk cuz it was a really inspiring night and it tonight re forced for me the the the

42. 10:02and which tool does what like it almost like I just what it seems very clear to me is that all of these tools are going to get so
43. 10:15good that it doesn't matter which tool you use and then it's all about why are you doing what you're doing who are you
44. 10:26doing it for what's your goal what are you trying to to accomplish how are you trying how are you trying to you know serve someone or
45. 10:35solve a problem or or did you hear wait sorry I don't I didn't see what that was Joker you were pinned for a second there and it went

50. 11:31this art where it's like she has a she has a break at lunch she makes a video she gets her work done she makes a like

52. 11:47like when I hear this it's just amazing to me she said I've had these ideas in my head all of my life and I've never been able to get them
53. 11:58out that's that's why her work's so good her work's not good because it's mid journey and it's Runway and she figured
54. 12:04out how to stitch together these clips with those and she prompted it in a certain way she's had ideas in her head all of
55. 12:13her life that she's never been able to get out she also said if you had told her if you had shown her her work to the her from a year ago
56. 12:29and said in a year you'll be doing this she said no [ __ ] way and this is she's a very accomplished woman right
57. 12:45like she's she's doing like worldclass work you know with big Brands and big organizations you know she's not someone
58. 12:56who just wanted to you know make a Tik Tok video she's very accomplished and if she's rediscovering her artistic voice because
59. 13:12of AI it's amazing did you see lip sync with Pika I saw it it it looks essentially exactly like H Jen and did except you have to
60. 13:27have the $70 a month subscription for it so I'm like go [ __ ] yourself like like let when when something like open AI Sora
61. 13:43gets announced and you've got P labs and you want to compete with Sora you put out the lip sync thing but
62. 13:56you don't only make it available to the people paying 70 bucks a month right that just means like a handful of people
63. 14:02are going to use it what you do is you put it out and you get you give people at least I don't know 20 credits to go
64. 14:11make some lip sync videos and get thousands hundreds of thousands of of them out there but so I saw it I like it
65. 14:20but everyone's going to have it and if they were trying to rest some attention away from Sora limiting it to the $70 month
66. 14:30subscription level I think is what's that word Dum Dum oh you could do better video for free with d Vinci resolve yeah there you
67. 14:43go I don't know D Vinci resolve I mean I know D Vinci but I I know what it is I don't know how to use it and I don't
68. 14:49know what the AI tool is in it oh man so one of the things that I've talked about on this channel
69. 15:05is I talk about I talk about living out loud right I talk about play with AI use it to solve stuff like use it to
70. 15:16solve problems for yourself or for friends or for work so you can you can get a sense of how good it is at doing
71. 15:24real work so there's play and then there's solve and then the third one is share right share share share it's it's really important and
72. 15:35I you know I kind of make fun of people that are like but everyone's going to say I'm a dumb Dum nobody wants to hear me talk about
73. 15:46AI Kyle I talk about AI all the time and they tell me to stop it and I make fun of them and I and I tell a story
74. 15:54about there are a handful of friends in my life that in the mid99s when I discovered the worldwide web I kind of lost my mind and but there
75. 16:03were there were some friends of mine that were talented and computer literate and smart and I'm like you should get into this worldwide web
76. 16:17thing and they were like yeah whatever right whatever and then over the years after years had passed and I did agency.com
77. 16:28and I did a bunch bunch of stuff you know they sort of said I probably should have listened to you back then so one of
78. 16:34those guys like a year ago I reached out to and I said remember when I told you to do the worldwide web stuff
79. 16:42yeah this AI stuff's even bigger you you need to get in you're you could kill it with your skills and talents you could
80. 16:49kill it with this okay never heard from him again he showed up at the AI Salon tonight yes and he acknowledged he said he said Kyle
81. 17:03told me a year ago I got to lean in heavy into the into learning HTML and then he goes a year ago Kyle told me to lean in heavy to AI well

114. 24:37got Ultra capable tools but it can figure out if What It produced was right and if not it can go fix
115. 24:51it so what happens when these things are just world class and you can say make me a movie with this that and the
116. 25:00other and make sure that the continuity of the width of rooms is the same whenever you're doing a panning

118. 25:27fully there's so many bright shiny objects right now that it's really hard to focus on a tool like I'm I'm also going back

125. 27:02can upload an image so it's got do and it's got GPT Vision it's also got different kinds of chats it's got designer vacation planner cooking
126. 27:17assistant and fitness trainer and then it's also got plugins and this is the same sorry set of five plug plugins they had for the past two
127. 27:32months here's an afterthought product listen we design some interface for it could you stick some plugins up on the
128. 27:39website please well we'll stick these five in is that okay it's better than nothing you're going to upgrade them soon
129. 27:50right that's two months ago that guy's that guy's still still in the corner at Microsoft going hey are you going to are

197. 40:46what's coming but also how people use that tool will help them make the tool better right so that's just natural
198. 40:55jankiness here's what's not Jank anank having a search engine on the open Ai mobile app that that you can search

323. 1:08:27you know kind of knitting them together is um is an ongoing art and yeah I noticing things in co-pilot like oh
324. 1:08:36there's two share buttons and like when you try to download something it's like downloading the transcript not the image
325. 1:08:42but then there's a different download button and that one like does download the image and so I I think it's just um
326. 1:08:48everyone trying to advance and parallel simultaneously yeah yeah you want to you want to know of of of [ __ ] amazing
327. 1:08:55one that's very much in the neighborhood so in chat GPT you generate an image if you click the download button that's the rollover
328. 1:09:06State on the image it downloads a PNG if you WR if you right click the image it saves it as a webp format or ax
329. 1:09:15if or whatever the hell that thing is and then if you reimport the image that chat jpt generated that you saved as it doesn't
330. 1:09:25recognize it as an image it's all nutty I know it's it's like it's like the Obama oh there's levels to exactly

332. 1:09:43intrinsically there are these various efforts which have taken taken flight you know there's like B image Creator
333. 1:09:51there's designer. microsoft.com there's co-pilot microsoft.com there's Dolly uh as a model there's the you know chat GPT
334. 1:10:02interface to it then there's like how Microsoft apps call it and there's like all levels of different um sort
335. 1:10:09of uh like responsible AI screening that goes on and they're kind of different and so yes I'm just so what you what's your what's your role
336. 1:10:21there so I um or can you talk about it yeah yeah yeah no it's good um so um I am trying to bring as much expressive
337. 1:10:34creative power to people as I can you know kind of I was doing before yeah um Microsoft has all of these surfaces that
338. 1:10:41have enormous audiences right so they've got uh you know they've got co-pilot they've got Windows they've got edge
339. 1:10:49browser they've got Windows you know like in the Shell like they they've got Bing office yeah it's a little
340. 1:11:00niche hope they can find product Market fit at some point you know but yeah no no that's actually a great point I mean all of
341. 1:11:09those are surfaces with huge numbers of people who are trying to communicate in one form or another visually yeah um you
342. 1:11:16know it's interesting almost 10 years to the day between you know since I um before I joined um Microsoft I joined
343. 1:11:24Google which happens to be about two blocks away and I was working for the same person there that I'm working for
344. 1:11:30now it's like so small uh and by the way this is all like a mile down the road from Tri HQ which used to be guess what Adobe HQ that's
345. 1:11:40hilarious if you're around Charleston Avenue and you drive past a big silver acrobat sculpture that is the former
346. 1:11:47Adobe headquarters wow I don't know whether they had the sculpture and they're like oh we should name a product
347. 1:11:52acrobat or whether they named acrobat and they're like oh we should make sculpture but either way they're
348. 1:11:57definitely connected that's funny yeah so it's all the same neighborhood anyway uh you know I was saying to my
349. 1:12:04new boss the other day um it's interesting we just passed the 40th anniversary of the Macintosh and you know I now I realize I've been doing
350. 1:12:12product management I think longer than some of my teammates have been alive wish um but like you know th those of us
351. 1:12:20who go back far enough you remember what you know computer AED creativity was like before the Mac right it was like you know aski art it
352. 1:12:30was like Apple 2 dos like green cursor black screen you know you're like trying to hunt and pack out like some some
353. 1:12:37little characters and then all of a sudden everything changed and you could create things you could never create
354. 1:12:41before yep even if it was super janky which obviously it was like 128 kilobytes of RAM and you know people
355. 1:12:47said it was like a Ferrari with a one gallon gas tank you know like you can tell it'll be something it just kind of
356. 1:12:53isn't yet but but you know holy [ __ ] it's going to be um and I feel like um you know we are in one of those moments
357. 1:13:03I I I had kind of a nice list I put together in for like you know Mac 1984 you know Photoshop 1990 yeah you could
358. 1:13:10really say like photoshop with layers like 1994 um you know you could say camera raw Lightroom aperture you
359. 1:13:18know 200225 that window um that's when I was on the Photoshop team and working on camera raw and Bridge you know because
360. 1:13:25that was that was when it IT shifted to like dslrs and going from like okay you have five drum scanned images and you do
361. 1:13:32100 things to each to you have a 100 images maybe do five things to each right you know and obviously you know
362. 1:13:37iPhone and Instagram and mobile you could then say like Snapchat with like sort of democratized um AR filters
363. 1:13:45anyway the point is there's one of these beats every like five or 10 years and I feel like this this is the one of the
364. 1:13:52moment and it's potentially the biggest of them um and I think it's you know it's two parts one is obviously
365. 1:13:57synthesizing things and the other is transforming them um you know when we launched uh firefly.com it's it's too
366. 1:14:05bad it's not up there anymore I think but there was like a little preview video of like hey what if you could just
367. 1:14:10edit stuff instructionally you know you could actually just say like put a hat on the dog yeah and you know that Tech
368. 1:14:16is it existed a year ago it exists now it's never been quite good enough but it always feels like we're about one paper
369. 1:14:23from it being y reallying uh if you go to EMU edit that's um meta's version of this stuff uh Apple just announced a
370. 1:14:30paper the point being there will be this um in incredible democratization of like making things and or improving things
371. 1:14:41yeah and and it's not all done just through declarations although that's a big part of it um some of the stuff
372. 1:14:47that's already in designer is like they've taken the segment anything model you know and after you generate
373. 1:14:53something in co- pilot it's very very embryonic right now but but like you can just like Mouse around and oh make the background
374. 1:15:00blurry long story short if you could actually have this nucleus for um creation and refinement and you could
375. 1:15:07put that everywhere it needs to be in context I think that's a big deal no it's a huge deal could be wrong but but
376. 1:15:15that's kind of the bet I'm making no it's a huge deal and it's you know it's funny it's even even the stuff that's
377. 1:15:19not you know not quite 100% there Kelly Kelly Bosch was spoke at the Salon tonight and you know she uses mid
378. 1:15:28journey to make the images and Runway to make the videos and things like that and then someone someone wisely asked her
379. 1:15:34she's a graphic designer and somebody said you know are you using AI you know has has it impacted your regular work
380. 1:15:41your paid work right she because she's doing all this cool art stuff and she was talking about how she uses it and
381. 1:15:46then and then she goes you know Photoshop generative Phil I use it all the time right it's yeah it's like I
382. 1:15:52select subject and then it's just it's completely trans form she goes I'm I'm using that a hundred times a day right
383. 1:15:58and that's that's janky but the fact that it can just it's mostly doing stuff not at the core of the image and you get
384. 1:16:05three options and it's just that quick and that easy it's transformed how she's using the tool right and yeah when all
385. 1:16:12those come together into a single thing and you can just you know easily navigate between I don't know modes
386. 1:16:19objects backgrounds all that sort of stuff holy [ __ ] to totally and you know the the sides of the point for me with
387. 1:16:26Microsoft getting into this stuff is like they don't I mean there's things like paint which have been around for
388. 1:16:30decades right and um you know so but but broadly speaking this is all kind of new territory for them um and so you know I
389. 1:16:40deeply love Photoshop I'm really proud to have you know not only helped get gender to fill in there but like make
390. 1:16:45sure it doesn't do gross and weird things yeah which like you you kind of take for granted until you see it doing
391. 1:16:51like you know being on the cover of the New York Post not photop obviously but like Gemini yeah um I mean and I
392. 1:16:57empathize with those guys because a lot of the stuff is not trivial to get right but but anyway the fact that you haven't
393. 1:17:04had stories like that knock wood about Adobe tools is good um yeah Adobe seems to have a good reputation right now for
394. 1:17:11the you know not training on copywritten things like well there's that and there's also just like um God I wish I
395. 1:17:19wish uh my former teammates there got more credit I I I kept telling them like guys you're doing like really rigorous
396. 1:17:27work to characterize like what is quality what is fairness what is representation you know and and like
397. 1:17:33maybe won't always get it right you know in some people's eyes but at least like have a really intellectually coherent um
398. 1:17:43methodology right and like you you should be not only just putting it out to get credit for it but like you should
399. 1:17:48put it out as um a guide to others in the industry who are trying to get this stuff right so anyway just like super
400. 1:17:55hats off to them um the the nice thing like I say with with Microsoft you you know you give up all of the um the
401. 1:18:04institutional like the heft of Photoshop but it's like here's a clean sheet like here's literally like what does it mean
402. 1:18:11to not just synthesize something in a Chad context but then to refine it like that seems sort of straightforward but I
403. 1:18:17don't know that it is it's like you know you make you know a couple images and then what I love with chat GPT is they're like oh
404. 1:18:25okay but make it more like polish a you know public uh theater and it's like oh okay like it has a notion of what that
405. 1:18:32means you know like ghost does a thing or you're like oh make it more steampunk whatever that means right but it kind of
406. 1:18:37knows what it means um versus like the modality of hey I've got now this artifact and I want to mutate that but
407. 1:18:45very precisely I don't want you to change everything I just want you to like change one part of it um so I think
408. 1:18:51there's like a bunch of new ux ground to cover which is cool um you know and I also think uh you know it's funny
409. 1:19:01because I've I've poked a lot of fun at Microsoft products over the years but you know there there's like a pretty
410. 1:19:08mature graphic stack in these Office Products you know and they' figured out how to like make it work in native code
411. 1:19:15and on the web and make it performance and make it compatible everywhere you know and um being able to leverage that
412. 1:19:22and and try to like bring bring like really good design principles and taste to it not not that folks aren't already doing that you know but
413. 1:19:31just like help bring more is cool well they've got listen I I feel like their interface and their design team like it
414. 1:19:38it it's the best I've seen Microsoft in a long long time right it's like like I know I I I kind of was sleeping on it to
415. 1:19:46be honest it's just too much time you know being busy like trying to get all the stuff into toob Apps but you get in
416. 1:19:51there like oh there's a lot there you also realize like well there's there's a lot more under the surface as I'm
417. 1:19:56rapidly learning that isn't necessarily exposed directly but could be right you know depending on like it's always a
418. 1:20:03question of like the right abstraction level you know you want to make things super accessible um and not like
419. 1:20:09offputting a nerdy but you also want to um you know give Discerning people enough control that they get something
420. 1:20:15they're really really happy with yeah um maybe let me just interject one more thing um because because this connects
421. 1:20:21to you Kyle so uh and it also connect like design um so Jonathan hefler is it hope I'm saying this right name right H
422. 1:20:31anyway like OG type designer I met him back at agency in like 1999 you guys brought him by to like give us a lecture
423. 1:20:38about sort of like the folk art of of like signage in in like bodegas in New York really interesting dude anyway there's there's this
424. 1:20:47philosophical term [ __ ] uh in in like a literal like term of art like llms are [ __ ] machines in the sense that
425. 1:20:55they they aren't lying or telling the truth necessarily they're just trying to make something plausible sounding and um
426. 1:21:04he had a really interesting thread on threads which I should try try to drop in your chat in a minute but like was
427. 1:21:11talking about how it's the same with with computers in design right like if you think of design as an exercise in
428. 1:21:18problem solving as opposed to um you know just like an exercise in style ex yep um Yep they're they're kind of just
429. 1:21:29shortcutting to that part and you know he wasn't like hand ringing about it he's definitely not a hater I mean he's
430. 1:21:35done amazing gorgeous like mid Journey stuff from the jump um but he was saying you know they're just they're just
431. 1:21:43jumping to this superficial end point and you know he was this he kind of triggered there's a like logo diffusion
432. 1:21:51you know it again promises to like make you a logo and it's like it will make you some approximating a logo like
433. 1:22:01robot here's why I mention all this I this may be a bridge too far but like the thing that I think could be really
434. 1:22:09cool working at Microsoft is trying to meet people where they are like let's say it's in PowerPoint or wherever and
435. 1:22:18it's like well they probably didn't come there because it's like innately pleasurable to make power points like
436. 1:22:22there's probably like David burn did that as a G like 20 years ago but like for most people it's a means to an end
437. 1:22:28right what I'm interested in is like why did you come here like what do you actually want right it's like do you
438. 1:22:34want a slide deck well maybe but why like keep digging at that it's like well I want to get promoted I want to get a
439. 1:22:39good grade in school I want to like yeah you know promote my business it's like okay cool like um so if you could
440. 1:22:46actually use an llm to kind of gently interrogate somebody uh that sounds weird but you know what I mean right
441. 1:22:53like have this so critic no it's you know you know what's interesting John in um I don't know if you've played with it
442. 1:23:00a lot but um co-pilot inside perplexity have you played with perplexity a lot only a little and I actually didn't even
443. 1:23:08know co-pilot's in there well it's not that Co they just call it co like every everyone's stepping all over each
444. 1:23:14everyone's branding toes so they got this tool called co-pilot and what it does is you do a prompt and then it kind
445. 1:23:20of suggests what it thinks your next prompt might be and it gives you like two or three options for for that and I
446. 1:23:26could see there being something like you know hey you're in this PowerPoint that you know they they say here's what I'm
447. 1:23:32trying to accomplish and I say well you could accomplish that in Excel or in word or that actually sounds like a
448. 1:23:38website do you want me to make you a website instead oh yeah actually what I want is a website I was just using this
449. 1:23:43as a storyboarding tool or something like that you know what I mean like that right yeah I know I I think I think
450. 1:23:50you're that you're putting your finger on it and I think we all have a general sense of there's like a a shape of a
451. 1:23:58solution in here yeah and you know I I joke with my teammates I'm like I kind of feel like Edison it's like well I
452. 1:24:05didn't fail 10,000 times I just you know proed 10,000 ways not to make a light bulb right and I feel like you know back
453. 1:24:10in 2012 I joined a video team at Adobe to try to like help people tell better stories I you and I have talked about
454. 1:24:16this with Story vine like it's hard just with with the tools we've had to date yeah to you know like abstract things in the
455. 1:24:25right way where it actually feels like oh I I organically told my own story I didn't just like paint by numbers you
456. 1:24:34know and yet you also don't want this like open-ended thing because it's like well that's not my day job I'm just a
457. 1:24:39you know I'm a teacher I'm right right exactly right it's freaking hard as you know is better than almost anybody um I
458. 1:24:48I do feel like these um these assistants can now do I hope what like at least a subset of what um a thoughtful human could do and
459. 1:25:01and again I hope that's not replacing that thoughtful human but I think it's like like if you if you ask for a logo I
460. 1:25:09don't want to you just like oh it's a dog and it's a blah and they like great here's like eight random things like it
461. 1:25:14should actually be like oh oh you're you're you're Dave you run across at you okay cool like tell me more like what
462. 1:25:21yeah yeah it should it should do a branding strategy exercise while it's doing the design right yeah exactly yeah
463. 1:25:27and then it's it's I mean it's like you know I think was Paul Rand you know making the next logo like I don't give
