13:57 you don't only make it available to the
13:59 people paying 70 bucks a month right

14:06 put it out and you get you give people
14:08 at least I don't know 20 credits to go
14:11 make some lip sync videos and get
14:14 thousands hundreds of thousands of of
14:16 them out there but so I saw it I like it
14:20 but everyone's going to have it and if
14:22 they were trying to rest some attention

1:09:58 as a model there's the you know chat GPT
1:10:02 interface to it then there's like how
1:10:04 Microsoft apps call it and there's like
1:10:06 all levels of different um sort
1:10:10 of uh like responsible AI screening that
1:10:14 goes on and they're kind of different
1:10:16 and
1:10:17 so yes I'm just so what you what's your

1:10:21 there so I um or can you talk about it

1:10:32 am trying to bring as much expressive
1:10:35 creative power to people as I can you

1:10:41 have enormous audiences right so they've

1:10:48 they've got Windows they've got edge

1:11:12 people who are trying to communicate in

1:11:26 blocks away and I was working for the

1:12:52 tell it'll be something it just kind of

1:13:01 you know we are in one of those moments
1:13:04 I I I had kind of a nice list I put
1:13:06 together in for like you know Mac 1984
1:13:08 you know Photoshop 1990 yeah you could

1:13:45 anyway the point is there's one of these
1:13:47 beats every like five or 10 years and I
1:13:49 feel like this this is the one of the
1:13:52 moment and it's potentially the biggest
1:13:54 of them um and I think it's you know
1:13:57 it's two parts one is obviously
1:13:58 synthesizing things and the other is
1:14:00 transforming them um you know when we
1:14:03 launched uh firefly.com it's it's too
1:14:06 bad it's not up there anymore I think
1:14:08 but there was like a little preview
1:14:09 video of like hey what if you could just
1:14:10 edit stuff instructionally you know you
1:14:12 could actually just say like put a hat
1:14:13 on the dog yeah and you know that Tech
1:14:16 is it existed a year ago it exists now
1:14:19 it's never been quite good enough but it
1:14:21 always feels like we're about one paper
1:14:23 from it being y reallying uh if you go
1:14:26 to EMU edit that's um meta's version of
1:14:28 this stuff uh Apple just announced a
1:14:30 paper the point being there will be this
1:14:35 um in incredible democratization of like
1:14:39 making things and or improving things
1:14:42 yeah and and it's not all done just
1:14:44 through declarations although that's a
1:14:46 big part of it um some of the stuff
1:14:48 that's already in designer is like
1:14:49 they've taken the segment anything model
1:14:52 you know and after you generate
1:14:53 something in co- pilot it's very very
1:14:55 embryonic right now but but like you can
1:14:57 just like Mouse around and oh make the
1:14:59 background
1:15:00 blurry long story short if you could
1:15:03 actually have this nucleus for um
1:15:05 creation and refinement and you could
1:15:07 put that everywhere it needs to be in
1:15:10 context I think that's a big deal no
1:15:13 it's a huge deal could be wrong but but

1:15:17 it's a huge deal and it's you know it's
1:15:18 funny it's even even the stuff that's

1:15:29 journey to make the images and Runway to
1:15:31 make the videos and things like that and
1:15:32 then someone someone wisely asked her
1:15:34 she's a graphic designer and somebody
1:15:36 said you know are you using AI you know
1:15:39 has has it impacted your regular work
1:15:41 your paid work right she because she's
1:15:43 doing all this cool art stuff and she
1:15:45 was talking about how she uses it and
1:15:47 then and then she goes you know
1:15:48 Photoshop generative Phil I use it all
1:15:50 the time right it's yeah it's like I
1:15:52 select subject and then it's just it's
1:15:54 completely trans form she goes I'm I'm
1:15:56 using that a hundred times a day right
1:15:59 and that's that's janky but the fact
1:16:00 that it can just it's mostly doing stuff
1:16:03 not at the core of the image and you get
1:16:06 three options and it's just that quick
1:16:08 and that easy it's transformed how she's
1:16:10 using the tool right and yeah when all
1:16:12 those come together into a single thing
1:16:15 and you can just you know easily
1:16:16 navigate between I don't know modes
1:16:19 objects backgrounds all that sort of
1:16:21 stuff holy [ __ ] to totally and you know
1:16:24 the the sides of the point for me with
1:16:27 Microsoft getting into this stuff is
1:16:28 like they don't I mean there's things
1:16:29 like paint which have been around for
1:16:31 decades right and um you know so but but
1:16:35 broadly speaking this is all kind of new
1:16:37 territory for them um and so you know I
1:16:40 deeply love Photoshop I'm really proud
1:16:42 to have you know not only helped get
1:16:45 gender to fill in there but like make
1:16:46 sure it doesn't do gross and weird
1:16:47 things yeah which like you you kind of
1:16:50 take for granted until you see it doing
1:16:51 like you know being on the cover of the
1:16:53 New York Post not photop obviously but
1:16:55 like Gemini yeah um I mean and I
1:16:58 empathize with those guys because a lot
1:16:59 of the stuff is not trivial to get right
1:17:03 but but anyway the fact that you haven't
1:17:05 had stories like that knock wood about
1:17:07 Adobe tools is good um yeah Adobe seems
1:17:10 to have a good reputation right now for
1:17:12 the you know not training on copywritten
1:17:14 things like well there's that and
1:17:17 there's also just like um God I wish I
1:17:20 wish uh my former teammates there got
1:17:23 more credit I I I kept telling them like
1:17:25 guys you're doing like really rigorous
1:17:27 work to characterize like what is
1:17:29 quality what is fairness what is
1:17:31 representation you know and and like
1:17:33 maybe won't always get it right you know
1:17:36 in some people's eyes but at least like
1:17:38 have a really intellectually coherent um
1:17:43 methodology right and like you you
1:17:46 should be not only just putting it out
1:17:48 to get credit for it but like you should
1:17:49 put it out as um a guide to others in
1:17:52 the industry who are trying to get this
1:17:53 stuff right so anyway just like super
1:17:56 hats off to them um the the nice thing
1:17:59 like I say with with Microsoft you you
1:18:01 know you give up all of the um the
1:18:04 institutional like the heft of Photoshop
1:18:07 but it's like here's a clean sheet like
1:18:10 here's literally like what does it mean
1:18:12 to not just synthesize something in a
1:18:14 Chad context but then to refine it like
1:18:16 that seems sort of straightforward but I
1:18:18 don't know that it is it's like you know
1:18:21 you make you know a couple images and
1:18:23 then what I love with chat GPT is
1:18:24 they're like oh
1:18:25 okay but make it more like polish a you
1:18:28 know public uh theater and it's like oh
1:18:32 okay like it has a notion of what that
1:18:33 means you know like ghost does a thing
1:18:35 or you're like oh make it more steampunk
1:18:36 whatever that means right but it kind of
1:18:38 knows what it means um versus like the
1:18:41 modality of hey I've got now this
1:18:43 artifact and I want to mutate that but
1:18:46 very precisely I don't want you to
1:18:47 change everything I just want you to
1:18:48 like change one part of it um so I think
1:18:51 there's like a bunch of new ux ground to
1:18:55 cover which is cool um you know and I
1:18:59 also think uh you know it's funny
1:19:02 because I've I've poked a lot of fun at
1:19:04 Microsoft products over the years but
1:19:06 you know there there's like a pretty
1:19:09 mature graphic stack in these Office
1:19:12 Products you know and they' figured out
1:19:13 how to like make it work in native code
1:19:16 and on the web and make it performance
1:19:17 and make it compatible everywhere you
1:19:19 know and um being able to leverage that
1:19:23 and and try to like bring
1:19:25 bring like really good design principles
1:19:28 and taste to it not not that folks
1:19:31 aren't already doing that you know but
1:19:32 just like help bring more is cool well
1:19:34 they've got listen I I feel like their
1:19:36 interface and their design team like it
1:19:38 it it's the best I've seen Microsoft in
1:19:41 a long long time right it's like like I
1:19:45 know I I I kind of was sleeping on it to
1:19:46 be honest it's just too much time you
1:19:49 know being busy like trying to get all
1:19:50 the stuff into toob Apps but you get in
1:19:52 there like oh there's a lot there you
1:19:53 also realize like well there's there's a
1:19:55 lot more under the surface as I'm
1:19:57 rapidly learning that isn't necessarily
1:19:59 exposed directly but could be right you
1:20:01 know depending on like it's always a
1:20:03 question of like the right abstraction
1:20:05 level you know you want to make things
1:20:06 super accessible um and not like
1:20:09 offputting a nerdy but you also want to
1:20:12 um you know give Discerning people
1:20:13 enough control that they get something
1:20:15 they're really really happy with yeah um
1:20:18 maybe let me just interject one more
1:20:20 thing um because because this connects
1:20:21 to you Kyle so uh and it also connect
1:20:25 like design um so Jonathan hefler is it
1:20:30 hope I'm saying this right name right H
1:20:32 anyway like OG type designer I met him
1:20:34 back at agency in like 1999 you guys
1:20:37 brought him by to like give us a lecture
1:20:39 about sort of like the folk art of of
1:20:41 like signage in in like bodegas in New
1:20:44 York really interesting dude
1:20:46 anyway there's there's this
1:20:48 philosophical term [ __ ] uh in in
1:20:50 like a literal like term of art like
1:20:52 llms are [ __ ] machines in the sense
1:20:54 that
1:20:56 they they aren't lying or telling the
1:20:58 truth necessarily they're just trying to
1:21:01 make something plausible sounding and um
1:21:05 he had a really interesting thread on
1:21:07 threads which I should try try to drop
1:21:10 in your chat in a minute but like was
1:21:11 talking about how it's the same with
1:21:13 with computers in design right like if
1:21:16 you think of design as an exercise in
1:21:19 problem solving as opposed to um you
1:21:23 know just like an exercise in style ex
1:21:27 yep um Yep they're they're kind of just
1:21:29 shortcutting to that part and you know
1:21:33 he wasn't like hand ringing about it
1:21:34 he's definitely not a hater I mean he's
1:21:36 done amazing gorgeous like mid Journey
1:21:38 stuff from the jump um but he was saying
1:21:41 you know they're just they're just
1:21:43 jumping to this superficial end point
1:21:46 and you know he was this he kind of
1:21:49 triggered there's a like logo diffusion
1:21:51 you know it again promises to like make
1:21:53 you a logo and it's like it will make
1:21:54 you some approximating a logo
1:22:00 like
1:22:02 robot here's why I mention all this I
1:22:05 this may be a bridge too far but like
1:22:07 the thing that I think could be really
1:22:10 cool working at Microsoft is trying to
1:22:13 meet people where they are like let's
1:22:15 say it's in PowerPoint or wherever and
1:22:18 it's like well they probably didn't come
1:22:20 there because it's like innately
1:22:21 pleasurable to make power points like
1:22:23 there's probably like David burn did
1:22:24 that as a G like 20 years ago but like
1:22:26 for most people it's a means to an end
1:22:28 right what I'm interested in is like why
1:22:31 did you come here like what do you
1:22:32 actually want right it's like do you
1:22:34 want a slide deck well maybe but why
1:22:37 like keep digging at that it's like well
1:22:39 I want to get promoted I want to get a
1:22:40 good grade in school I want to like yeah
1:22:42 you know promote my business it's like
1:22:44 okay cool like um so if you could
1:22:46 actually use an llm to kind of gently
1:22:50 interrogate somebody uh that sounds
1:22:52 weird but you know what I mean right
1:22:54 like have this so critic no it's you
1:22:56 know you know what's interesting John in
1:22:59 um I don't know if you've played with it
1:23:01 a lot but um co-pilot inside perplexity
1:23:04 have you played with perplexity a lot
1:23:07 only a little and I actually didn't even
1:23:08 know co-pilot's in there well it's not
1:23:11 that Co they just call it co like every
1:23:13 everyone's stepping all over each
1:23:15 everyone's branding toes so they got
1:23:16 this tool called co-pilot and what it
1:23:18 does is you do a prompt and then it kind
1:23:20 of suggests what it thinks your next
1:23:22 prompt might be and it gives you like
1:23:24 two or three options for for that and I
1:23:27 could see there being something like you
1:23:29 know hey you're in this PowerPoint that
1:23:31 you know they they say here's what I'm
1:23:33 trying to accomplish and I say well you
1:23:34 could accomplish that in Excel or in
1:23:37 word or that actually sounds like a
1:23:39 website do you want me to make you a
1:23:40 website instead oh yeah actually what I
1:23:42 want is a website I was just using this
1:23:44 as a storyboarding tool or something
1:23:46 like that you know what I mean like that
1:23:48 right yeah I know I I think I think
1:23:50 you're that you're putting your finger
1:23:52 on it and I think we all have a general
1:23:55 sense of there's like a a shape of a
1:23:58 solution in here yeah and you know I I
1:24:01 joke with my teammates I'm like I kind
1:24:04 of feel like Edison it's like well I
1:24:05 didn't fail 10,000 times I just you know
1:24:07 proed 10,000 ways not to make a light
1:24:08 bulb right and I feel like you know back
1:24:11 in 2012 I joined a video team at Adobe
1:24:13 to try to like help people tell better
1:24:15 stories I you and I have talked about
1:24:16 this with Story vine like it's hard just
1:24:20 with with the tools we've had to date
1:24:22 yeah
1:24:22 to you know like abstract things in the
1:24:25 right way where it actually feels like
1:24:27 oh I I organically told my own story I
1:24:32 didn't just like paint by numbers you
1:24:35 know and yet you also don't want this
1:24:36 like open-ended thing because it's like
1:24:38 well that's not my day job I'm just a
1:24:40 you know I'm a teacher I'm right right
1:24:42 exactly right it's freaking hard as you
1:24:45 know is better than almost anybody um I
1:24:49 I do feel like these um these assistants
1:24:53 can now
1:24:55 do I hope what like at least a subset of
1:24:58 what um a thoughtful human could do and
1:25:02 and again I hope that's not replacing
1:25:05 that thoughtful human but I think it's
1:25:07 like like if you if you ask for a logo I
1:25:09 don't want to you just like oh it's a
1:25:11 dog and it's a blah and they like great
1:25:13 here's like eight random things like it
1:25:15 should actually be like oh oh you're
1:25:17 you're you're Dave you run across at you
1:25:19 okay cool like tell me more like what
1:25:21 yeah yeah it should it should do a
1:25:22 branding strategy exercise while it's
1:25:25 doing the design right yeah exactly yeah
1:25:28 and then it's it's I mean it's like you
1:25:29 know I think was Paul Rand you know
1:25:31 making the next logo like I don't give
1:25:34 you eight logos or whatever I give you a
1:25:36 I give you a solution right I solved
1:25:38 your problem because I actually
1:25:40 understood what the problem is right and
1:25:42 you know that's pretty pretty uh
1:25:45 ambitious to think we could do that with
1:25:47 with the state of the tech right now but
1:25:49 guess what man two years ago I mean we
1:25:52 all looked at the dolly one paper and
1:25:54 we're like what like it's it's 256 256
1:25:56 it's a Dion radish turned into a chair
1:25:58 like oh whatever that's not gonna work
1:25:59 yeah exactly like a month later uh
1:26:03 opening eyes like good news everyone
1:26:05 Microsoft super computer and it gave us
1:26:07 a billion dollars I'm like holy [ __ ] if
1:26:09 you actually throw enough computer this

1:27:24 Python like one upping each other like I
1:27:25 used to live in a lake but

1:27:33 insights I'm like oh they probably gave

1:27:56 goofy ass like movie posters and and
1:27:59 trading cards and things I just make
1:28:00 them to like hopefully amuse My Wife and
1:28:02 Kids it's all like in screw bad jokes um
1:28:05 but we're sitting there looking at it
1:28:06 and then like oh oops I found a typo or
1:28:09 critiquing it I'm like oh my God though
1:28:11 guys like this thing knows what like

1:28:15 are chief is and it's like doing the
1:28:18 sophisticated type setting you know and
1:28:20 it's like extruding it it's got like
1:28:21 multiple levels of effect and I'm like

1:29:26 like characteristic floaters that kind
1:29:28 of look like um the upside down and
1:29:30 stranger things like this weird
1:29:31 particulate and I remember Runway ml had
1:29:34 their um AI film festival and it was
1:29:38 like between taking submissions and the
1:29:41 film festival uh they there was some rev
1:29:44 with the Nerf attack and the floaters
1:29:45 went away and um was like even in that
1:29:49 couple months you could date oh likew
1:29:51 was a snade right and and was saying
1:29:53 like people I think came up to him and
1:29:54 they were like damn it dude why'd you
1:29:56 get rid of those cool floaty things like
1:29:58 well they were a bug clearly they're not
1:30:00 like part of the world they're like yeah
1:30:02 but I like can you give me those back

1:31:17 ton of like humility and gratitude and

1:34:02 that but who are like excessively
1:34:04 opinionated not even not even
1:34:06 opinionated but just like like if you
1:34:09 ask me and please don't to tell you
1:34:13 about car infotainment systems and why
1:34:16 every single one is a veil of Tears like
1:34:19 not just in detail but like systemically
1:34:21 why that is like that that would be
1:34:25 your battery would die doing that like
1:34:28 that's what I want in like a PM it's
1:34:29 like somebody who like is
1:34:32 excessively like unreasonably yep um
1:34:36 pissed off and like every time I use
1:34:38 Microsoft teams or I try to share

1:38:20 John spoke at the AI Salon before they

1:38:26 the fence about whether they were going

1:38:29 Ai and so he spoke he came and spoke to
1:38:32 this group before they knew what they
1:38:34 were doing and then like I don't know
1:38:36 two months later they launched the
1:38:38 Firefly beta and then they moved quick
