9:04 um and so in celebration of our first
9:08 in-person meeting here in Denver we're
9:10 calling them AI Salon after hours and
9:13 Leah faston was on her way to California
9:16 and stopped in to um to Denver to come
9:23 to the first in-person meeting how cool
9:25 is that Leah and I started the AI Salon
9:29 in
9:30 December of
9:32 2022 December 7th
9:35 2022 and we've never met in person and
9:38 so she was there tonight so so haly
9:41 leyah I don't know if you're watching
9:42 she might it's not midnight now because
9:44 she's not on the East Coast she's in
9:45 Denver so I guess she's at her hotel so
9:47 hopefully she's
9:48 watching and uh it was really nice there
9:51 were a bunch of people there we were
9:53 just hanging out there were some new
9:54 people oh Leah's here awesome hey Leah
9:56 look at us we met in person that is is
9:59 not AI generated with her first
10:02 anniversary shirt on exactly I felt I
10:05 felt like a total total loser when I saw
10:08 she had her Salon shirt on I'm like oh I

10:13 didn't but it was so great to see her so

10:17 you she's amazing she's amazing super
10:19 powerful woman and uh you know just
10:22 trying to figure out figure out her way
10:25 in this crazy ass life with this crazy
10:27 ass AI stuff like we all are

10:32 very happy so it it was really awesome

11:07 with AI like self-expression using AI is
11:10 a gateway to authentic self-expression
11:14 and it's it's super super exciting so if

11:21 don't know what the a salon is what's
11:23 the salon is this is that where Leia
11:24 gets her hair done is that where she got
11:26 the curls in her hair at the salon no no
11:29 this is isn't that kind of Salon people
11:31 come on think French the
11:35 AI Theon it's French I don't know if
11:38 it's French but it sounds
11:42 funny it's a it's a salon like like in
11:44 the in the 19th century sense of the
11:48 word bunch of bunch of interesting
11:50 people getting together in a curated
11:52 conversation and sharing ideas and and
11:56 you know coming up with ideas and just
11:58 you know you know idea smashing so

12:02 is and and it's really amazing so if you

13:17 you to do is I want you to go to welcome

13:20 salon and I want you to check out what
13:22 we're about so see see how we're just
13:25 like you know this merry band of people
13:28 how do we put it ragtag group of Misfits

13:33 heading off trying to figure out
13:34 whatever the hell's going on with this
13:36 AI stuff we're choosing to be on this
13:38 adventure together and so I want you to
13:39 go read about what we're about and I
13:42 really want you to pay attention to our
13:44 values
13:45 curiosity
13:47 generosity
13:49 exploration collaboration
13:52 inclusion and
13:54 empathy um and go read about what we're
13:56 about and if you resonate with these
13:58 values then you're going to really dig
14:00 this group and if you don't that's cool
14:01 too but these are probably not your
14:03 people and then uh and then the next
14:05 stop I'd like you to do is go to
14:08 introduce yourself and introduce
14:09 yourself take that value of generosity
14:11 and even though introducing yourself to
14:13 a bunch of strangers is [ __ ]
14:15 terrifying like do it anyway [ __ ]
14:19 it that's that's so kind of one of the
14:21 Emos of the salon is just just go just
14:24 play just play and so one of the ways
14:27 you can play is introduce yourself tell
14:29 us who you are tell us what you're up to
14:31 tell us where you are with AI even if
14:33 you're like I don't know anything about
14:35 AI I just someone told me to come here I
14:37 don't know what to
14:39 do by jingus this is so scary say that
14:44 just be authentic just introduce
14:46 yourself our request is that you use
14:48 your real name I think it's a good idea
14:50 if you include your photo if you're
14:52 comfortable doing
14:53 that why well we want to get to know
14:56 each other why because every everyone
14:59 right now who's trying to figure out AI
15:02 who's trying to get their head around
15:04 this is feeling the same way isolated
15:07 and scared and underwater and like
15:11 they're way far behind and they can't
15:13 keep up and if they as they try to keep
15:15 up it's getting even more overwhelmed
15:17 it's like the more you learn the more
15:18 you have to learn and that's what it
15:20 feels like right now and so one of the
15:23 best antidotes to that Source Camp I'm
15:27 Kelly and I'm addicted to chat GV
15:29 hi Kelly it is it's a support group this
15:33 is a support group and so if you
15:35 introduce yourself here what you'll find
15:37 is that this is a remarkable group of
15:39 people who will welcome you um and then
15:41 in the community section there's a water
15:43 cooler discussion there's a news channel
15:45 there's AI tools and resources so this
15:48 is a list that I personally maintain
15:50 that is like here's all the things that
15:53 if if you want to get AI literate where
15:55 you start in my opinion is with chat GPT
15:59 and if you can afford it if if you can
16:01 afford it in any way 20 bucks a month
16:03 chat GPD plus get the chat GPD Plus
16:06 subscription and just start learning all
16:09 of the [ __ ] that this tool can
16:11 do and
16:13 then why do that because it's the best
16:17 one right now well how do we know it's
16:19 the best I cuz I don't know
16:22 cuz if you use these things you realize
16:25 they're all sort of janky and this is
16:27 the least janky of the janky
16:29 all right and then
16:31 tomorrow apparently
16:34 supposedly in the speculation machine of
16:37 chat TMZ
16:39 apparently Google is launching Gemini
16:43 Advanced what they're calling Gemini
16:45 Advanced or Gemini Ultra is the is I
16:48 guess the code name of the of the
16:51 model apparently they're launching that
16:53 tomorrow we don't know if it's like I
16:56 haven't confirmed it I'm not a reporter
16:57 so I'm just going off with what people
16:59 on the the internets have
17:01 said and it's apparently as good or
17:04 better than chat gp4
17:07 so start out playing with chat gp4
17:10 Master it tonight and then tomorrow you
17:12 get to learn a new

17:16 tool um but but also this list has got
17:19 you know lots of other large language
17:21 models to play with it's got image
17:23 generation tools like Dolly and mid
17:25 journey and Leonardo and Firefly it's
17:28 got video creation tools like Runway P
17:31 Labs um music and audio Tools 11 labs
17:34 sunno and the the batch of those and
17:37 then some 3D tools um I saw a couple of
17:40 tools on Twitter today that look like
17:42 they deserve to be on this list but I
17:44 haven't really played with them so I
17:45 haven't added them yet and then there's
17:47 also people you should follow here okay
17:49 now the other thing that we do is we've
17:51 got our own um we've got in the salon
17:54 we've got these things called guilds so
17:56 Leah runs the Art Guild I mentioned and
17:58 Jane runs the white Writers Guild Peter
18:00 Kaminsky runs AI 101 there's there's all
18:03 these different guilds here so think of
18:05 these as different sub communities
18:07 within within the salon so if you're
18:10 interested in different topics um you
18:12 can start to find your people that way
18:14 and then also we have clubs and one of
18:16 the clubs is the AI learning lab
18:18 Irregulars club and that's this group's
18:20 little private area so if you're making
18:23 images tonight uh for the club or making
18:25 jokes or trolling me or whatever you
18:27 want to do share them in the Irregulars
18:29 channel so we've got a place where we
18:31 can all go check out each other's uh
18:34 images and what we're doing tonight all
18:36 right there's some cool stuff in there

19:32 on the community site here and we've got
19:34 a th000 members we just hit 1,000 today
19:38 on Meetup and which is that's 14 months
19:42 old the the uh the mighty Network site
19:44 here is only like two and a half months
19:46 old so we hit we hit a thousand people
19:48 here before we hit it on Meetup which is
19:50 really cool um and and what this what
19:53 this thing becomes is it becomes a Haven
19:55 for you like as as Kelly put it hi my
19:57 name's Kelly I'm addicted to Chad gbt
20:01 it's been it's been 10 minutes since
20:03 I've made an image with
20:04 Dolly um I had a fun thing tonight um
20:09 someone came to the salon to the to the
20:11 salon After Hours the the meet up I said
20:16 what are you do she's like an art I'm an
20:17 artist and I I draw these designs and
20:19 then I I put them in Photoshop then I
20:21 put them in illustrator and once they're
20:23 an illustrator then I can take them to a
20:25 laser printer and I can do all this
20:26 stuff and she was talking about all this
20:27 art produces in the real world and how
20:30 excited she was about being able to get
20:33 the art you know from drawing State into
20:37 math basically and once it's in math you
20:39 can do anything with it and she's got
20:41 all these
20:42 ideas and you know I was asking her you
20:44 know have you played with chat GPT oh I
20:46 played with Dolly I played with this a
20:47 little played with that but she hadn't
20:49 really played with chat GPT 4 and I said
20:51 well you want to see something fun you
20:53 want to see something cool you know you
20:55 know my my old Trope of like oh yeah
20:57 this stuff's kind of scary and
20:59 intimidating want to see something
21:01 cool so so um I said let me see a
21:05 picture of your art again so she had
21:06 showed me your piece of art um and I
21:09 took a picture with my phone and then I
21:10 put it into chat GPT and I said please
21:12 describe this and then it it started
21:16 typing right and she looked at it and
21:18 she was she started reading it and she
21:19 was like oh my God oh my God she took my
21:22 phone out of my hand and she's like
21:24 reading this thing oh my God oh my God
21:26 and she goes well I got this wrong and I
21:28 got that I said ah don't worry about the
21:29 details and she's like okay and she kept
21:31 reading she's like oh my God oh my God
21:34 and so then she handed me the phone back
21:36 and I said I said you know please make
21:38 an image and then and then she said uh I
21:41 said I said you know give me give me her
21:44 her image had a dragon in it and
21:45 something else a dragon and a Lotus
21:48 Flower and so she said put a make a an
21:52 image with a Buddha and a and a a
21:55 Japanese gate I forget what it was
21:57 called a something gate
21:59 um and so I put that in there and I said
22:01 do it in the style that you described
22:03 above and you know it spins out its
22:05 thing and it spits out this image and
22:07 she literally she went oh my
22:11 God she had a Kevin mallister moment
22:14 right there she goes this changes
22:16 everything I said I know so that was
22:19 pretty cool and then she was and then
22:21 she was talking to Leah later and I came
22:24 over and I joined the conversation she
22:26 was like I can do all this stuff I can
22:28 put it in illustrator and now I can use
22:30 this thing to make these images much
22:32 faster cuz it takes me a long time to
22:34 draw them for real and now I can do them
22:35 it was it was really cool just to see
22:37 her she's [ __ ] lit up you know Kyle
22:41 are you aware that Google launched a new
22:43 image generator called image FX
22:47 um is that new I well so Google I know

32:55 what they promised but

33:04 language model is going to be as good or
33:06 better than chat GPT chat GPT
33:11 4 and you know that's pretty

33:19 X right now and see if there's anything

34:24 got it running so that's an
34:26 accomplishment
34:28 and you know hopefully it's gotten
34:29 better since when I tried that that was
34:30 back in summer of 22 yeah or fall of 22
34:36 is when I was doing that
34:39 crazy um yeah it's just nuts just
34:43 nuts demerits for missing lives I listen

39:50 business analysis what if you were good

42:06 better every human being is going to be
42:08 able to level
42:10 up like like literally may this maybe
42:15 this is a good metaphor because i' I've
42:16 talked about this before that there's
42:18 something about the immediacy
42:20 of of AI right now where you can just

42:27 me a paragraph out comes a paragraph

1:08:44 people are like oh you shouldn't have to
1:08:46 pay $30 a month for chat GPT or whatever
1:08:49 he said if a company you know provides
1:08:53 chat GPT to their their employees and
1:08:56 those employees get a 10%
1:08:59 increase he did he did like the math on
1:09:02 this it's like you know 17 hours a week
1:09:04 or whatever or not a week 17 hours a
1:09:06 month and it comes out to like $684 so
1:09:10 for a $30 investment you get
1:09:12 $684
1:09:14 back and it's like it's like the it it's
1:09:18 the mo it's the most profound deal in
1:09:23 software so like even even the
1:09:26 commercial
1:09:27 stuff is ridiculously cheap for what it

1:16:58 me it's like there's enough of us enough

1:17:06 happening with this generative AI

1:17:10 that there's a shift happening and it's

1:17:30 women but I'm getting to meet them

1:18:21 anything new going on
1:18:24 but there's another part of me like I
1:18:26 just I don't really give a [ __ ] about

1:18:35 now this isn't about the tools this
1:18:37 isn't about the
1:18:39 tools it's going to be don't get me
1:18:43 wrong like I I I think when when the
1:18:47 Genai stuff kind of stabilizes which is
1:18:50 it's not going to be for a while right
1:18:52 it's probably not going to be
1:18:57 it's it like my gut tells me at least
1:19:00 three years probably more like 5 to 10
1:19:02 where it's just going to be [ __ ]
1:19:08 chaos and when it starts to stabilize
1:19:11 then people can sort of hunker down and
1:19:13 get their Specialties and things like
1:19:14 that but I I I
1:19:22 just
1:19:25 I am increasingly less
1:19:28 convinced that mastering any single
1:19:31 tool
1:19:33 matters like it's not bad like if you
1:19:36 get really good at Mid Journey you're
1:19:38 going to make some brilliant [ __ ]
1:19:40 images like Peter Kaminsky I think he's
1:19:42 made like 80 or 90 or 100,000 images and
1:19:45 and like these are the keeper images so
1:19:47 he's probably made you know five times
1:19:49 that amount to get to those curated
1:19:53 ones so there's nothing wrong with like
1:19:56 taking a single tool and [ __ ] running
1:19:59 down the rabbit
1:20:01 hole
1:20:03 but is mid Journey going to be the tool
1:20:06 two years out I don't know maybe maybe
1:20:10 not some of the [ __ ] Google was showing
1:20:12 in their previews over the summer with
1:20:14 their image stuff means that there's
1:20:16 there's [ __ ] cooking at Google that's
1:20:18 going to just be insane like that might
1:20:22 be the one I like so the individual
1:20:25 tools are all are going to be
1:20:28 ephemeral right we're in primordial soup
1:20:31 right so it's just like the thing that
1:20:32 looks like the big thing that's emerging

1:21:36 inspiration knowing that everything
1:21:38 you're learning is going to be
1:21:39 irrelevant next
1:21:42 month I think it like I think it's this
1:21:45 lifeold lesson like enjoy the journey

1:23:34 zoom meeting it took me a year to figure
1:23:36 out that that was not a good a good user
1:23:39 experience but but Roger came to a bunch
1:23:41 of
1:23:43 them and it was called the AI artist
1:23:45 salon and we had a Discord and so Roger
1:23:47 got in the in the AI artist Salon
1:23:49 Discord and he said I'll teach these
1:23:52 [ __ ]
1:23:53 and he he made his name Roger not an
1:23:58 artist cuz he was an
1:24:00 engineer right but there was something
1:24:03 about this group that he was digging and
1:24:05 he was showing up but he was like he was
1:24:07 like this kudin he's like no [ __ ] this
1:24:09 is you know I'm an engineer and I'm
1:24:11 going to engineer my way through this
1:24:12 and then people started posting We got a
1:24:15 mid Journey server in
1:24:18 Discord and then people started posting
1:24:20 stuff and they started posting their
1:24:22 prompts and he started Ed asking
1:24:23 questions like an engineer would well
1:24:26 what did you do to do this and what did
1:24:27 you do to do that and then some of them
1:24:30 were artists they're like I don't know I
1:24:31 just did [ __ ] and he
1:24:34 hated and so he got all engineering on
1:24:38 it and he started engineering the [ __ ]
1:24:40 out of mid
1:24:42 journey and figuring out how the prompts
1:24:45 worked and a funny thing happened on him
1:24:49 taking his engineering skills and
1:24:51 applying them to Mid Journey
1:24:53 he got really [ __ ] good at Mid
1:24:55 Journey he was creating art that was
1:24:58 like holy [ __ ] that's good like
1:25:00 consistently because because he was
1:25:02 attacking it like a system he was
1:25:05 generating a lot of [ __ ]
1:25:07 art and then another thing happened he
1:25:11 started enjoying making
1:25:14 art and he changed his
1:25:18 name Roger becoming an
1:25:21 artist
1:25:24 I think that's [ __ ]
1:25:28 inspiring and like two months ago he he
1:25:31 entered an AI art like Gallery showing
1:25:36 in Boulder and got two of his pieces
1:25:38 selected so he's now a you know a
1:25:41 gallery shown

1:25:47 thought that would like be in his bingo
1:25:51 card
1:25:59 like what's your version of that maybe
1:26:00 you're an artist and you always wanted
1:26:02 to be good at
1:26:03 math or
1:26:06 science maybe you're fascinated with the
1:26:09 the quantum
1:26:12 world and you're like yeah but you
1:26:15 know I couldn't cut it with the math and
1:26:18 I had to drop out of Science school so I
1:26:20 got this humanities degree and now I'm
1:26:23 just an artist but I've always wanted to
1:26:26 do
1:26:27 space
1:26:28 time well now you
1:26:34 can if you're in the game if you're in
1:26:36 the
1:26:37 conversation if you're willing to dick
1:26:39 around with these tools and figure out
1:26:41 where the buttons are that allow you to

1:27:34 data there's some trends that point to

1:27:38 you like me to plot those for you and
1:27:41 you're like sure and it'll open up a
1:27:42 library and it'll create a little plot
1:27:44 of the data

1:28:42 demos that Google did with

1:28:50 oh these AI things are going to become
1:28:53 the everything app you're like what do
1:28:55 you mean the everything app Kyle what

1:28:59 about it will do
1:29:04 everything I'd like to see a movie star
1:29:06 in young Tom Cruz and uh old Dakota
1:29:14 Fanning that tells the standby me story
1:29:17 on a on a abandoned Space

1:29:24 bang I'd like an application that does
1:29:33 that we not that far from that
1:29:38 Jetson I'd like a prime rib
