5. 0:56here, if you're new to the AI salon, um, in between when I get boring, occasionally I'll talk about something
6. 1:02that'll just be boring. Generally, starting about now and lasting about 90 minutes. That's self-deprec.

26. 3:50have in the comments here. And then tonight is an ask me anything. So, anything you want to talk about. A lot
27. 3:56happened this week with Google IO that I'm happy to talk about. Um I think one of the the more significant things um
28. 4:07that was released I think is going to be underappreciated um which is the new the new video model from um from Google called they're
29. 4:20calling it Gemini Omni but it's not called that anywhere um but it's actually a world model. Okay, so from coder dad, between Google
30. 4:29showing off deeper Gemini integration across search, Android, and workspace and open AAI pushing codeex forward, are
31. 4:37we headed toward one AI assistant that follows us everywhere or we or will we still need different tools for different
32. 4:46jobs? Okay, great question. We're in the middle of those two worlds. This is what what was just described here. So they're they're
33. 5:00the last three and a half years. The AI tools have largely been these discrete things that we have to go learn, right?
34. 5:10You go to chat GPT, you learn how to do custom settings, you learn how to do custom GPTs, you learn how to um do
35. 5:18prompt engineering and and do structured prompting and things like that. you you talk into chat GPT um you get out a
36. 5:27result like us as a human are going to the tool using the tool and the tool is responding and then we're doing
37. 5:35something with that you know we're publishing it or we're putting it in some other chain of craft. The new world where we're headed is a
38. 5:46world where whether it's Codeex or Open Claw or Hermes or um or or the new Google version of this, the AI the AI uh studio
39. 5:59version of this. They've got a consumer version of it called Spark that they talked about. What these things do is they run 24/7.
40. 6:12Um they can take action without you um needing to talk to them, right? You can just give them a goal.
41. 6:24In fact, one of the features, one of the new features in Codeex is goal. I have a goal that you will go do this thing for
42. 6:32me at some point somehow. and that's it. And then it will go off and do stuff. Now, why I say that we're
43. 6:40in between these two worlds, all of the discrete individual tools are getting more and more and more complicated.
44. 6:47They're getting more and more sophisticated and they still largely suck. They still largely don't quite give us
45. 6:59what we need. Right? You know, Opus 4.6 6 was really good at coding and then they launched Opus 4.7 which you think
46. 7:06is going to be better but it's actually not. They kind of borked the model and they made it stupider and and chat GPT is awesome and then
47. 7:16sometimes it's not. So the tools themselves are okay but they still require our participation. All these agent frameworks
48. 7:27are all brand new and they're all janky and they are all broken and they they sort of do remarkable things and then
49. 7:35they sometimes don't and they sometimes do. And if you're not super geeky and want to get under the hood and figure
50. 7:41out how to do things like skills and skill management and all sorts of things like that, they're just kind of a mess.
51. 7:49And even if you do all that stuff, they're still kind of a mess. So we're in the middle. We're in the middle.
52. 7:54We're in the goopy the goopy transition between a world of discrete AI tools and these agentic truly agentic tools that
53. 8:04are going to do things on our behalf. Where we're headed clearly is we're just going to be able to say I
54. 8:14want to start a business and the agents will do their thing and go help you start a business. Um yeah. So that's
55. 8:22that. So, if anyone has any questions, pop them in the chat. Um, if uh if you want me to to dig in deeper on
56. 8:30something, if you have uh opinions on something and you want you want to go at it, I'm happy to do that, too. Um,

61. 9:29Okay. If AI search can answer questions more directly instead of sending people to websites, what happens to creators,
62. 9:37bloggers, journalists, and small businesses that depend on search traffic? Well, the world she is a changing um
63. 9:51search is changing. Google Google has has recognized that search as we knew it um is going away. People don't want to do their own work.
64. 10:06They don't want to go look at your website. They don't want to, you know, people want to be able to ask a question
65. 10:12and have the answer. Chat GPT has trained us that we can actually have the answer. We don't need to go find the answer on our own. Um,
66. 10:22being that search is a significant part of Google's revenue. Um, they're they're kind of reinventing it. Now, there is a
67. 10:32cool thing that you can do is you can go into chat GPT. right now. I did this for StoryVine about a month ago.
68. 10:41You can go into chat GPT right now and you can say, "Hey, I've heard that there are ways for me to improve how my small business shows up
69. 10:55in a chat GPT chat." So if someone's chatting about something, your business could come up, but you have to tell the chat GPT and
70. 11:06Claude engines that you're there. Um and and same with Gemini and things like that. So there's new kind of documents that you can um
71. 11:17put on your website um that I think they now call them GEO, generative engine optimization. So there's SEO which is search optimization
72. 11:28and there's GEO which is um uh generative operation LLM optimization. Um I did when I asked this question I
73. 11:38did it in uh Claude. So I went to Claude 4.6. You can probably do it in 4.7 too. And I said, um, I want, you know, go to my website
74. 11:51and and look at how it's doing and, you know, give me an analysis of my website and then based on the website and based
75. 11:58on some other things that I told it, you know, I want um pharma sales reps to be able to find storyvine and I I you know,
76. 12:06I want I want all these different kinds of folks to be able to find storyvine. Um, so go do that analysis. So, it went
77. 12:13and it did that analysis and then I said, "Tell me what documents I need to create and how to install those on my website." So, it actually
78. 12:22went and analyzed the website and it said, "Hey, I actually figured something out. Your website right now, the blog on
79. 12:28your website doesn't have a robot.txt or it's broken or, you know, access to it was was borked." And so, um, so it
80. 12:37discovered a problem. It said your blog is basically, you know, invisible to Google. Um, and then it gave me all
81. 12:43these documents and it wrote them out and they're all really good. And then it gave me instructions on how to install all that stuff. So,
82. 12:51so you just basically need to get with the times. People are going to use LLMs. You want to be inside them and
83. 12:56discoverable in them. You want to you want to understand what Google's doing and how search is changing.
84. 13:02And you no longer have to rely on, you know, someone who knows completely what they're doing to go do that for you,
85. 13:10right? We we have LLMs now that can help us do that. So, there you go. That is that. What else going on? Who do we got

93. 14:26abstract. The image should honor those who gave their lives in service while also showing what carries forward
94. 14:33because of them. Keep the tone respectful, resp uh reflective and hopeful. Avoid celebration. Focus on

99. 15:13Adams, archetypal architect in the house. How is everybody on this Friday night date night? Future teacher AI. Um, with Google and
100. 15:29OpenAI both making AI more conversational, visual, and embedded into daily tools, what should schools be teaching
101. 15:38students now? Prompt writing, AI skepticism, coding, or something else entirely? Well, what schools should not
102. 15:46be teaching is that AI is evil. Schools should not be teaching that AI is cheating because AI is going to be
103. 15:56like the internet. It's going to be everywhere. It's going to be this ubiquitous just part of the fabric of
104. 16:01what we do. It's going to be it's going to be everywhere. It's going to be in everything we do. So given that, I think the most
105. 16:10important things to teach students right now in a lot of ways have nothing to do with AI. It it's things like critical
106. 16:19thinking. It's things like, you know, responsible use of tools like AI, right? You can use tools for cheating. You can
107. 16:28also use the internet for cheating. You can also there's there's all sorts of things you can use for cheating, right?
108. 16:36I used to have a a language class when I was in high school where the teacher the the vocabulary tests counted four times
109. 16:49what the what the comprehension tests counted. And so I did the math in my head and so did my little friends and I.
110. 16:57And we understood that if we got the vocabulary tests perfect or even decently well, we could we could fail
111. 17:06the the the comprehension tests and still get like a B. And so when when it was vocabulary day, we would have the 20
112. 17:14words written on our hand and really little ink. So you can cheat like that, too, right? There's all sorts of ways to cheat. um
113. 17:26working with students to understand, hey, here's what AI makes possible. Um working with students to do things
114. 17:35like why don't you make some stuff with AI and then come in and share with the class what you created and what your
115. 17:43process was to get there. doing things like, "Hey, this week we're going to be writing an essay in class on pads with pencils.
116. 17:57We're going to be doing the work in class. And then next week, we're going to be creating essays with with AI.
117. 18:05And then the following week, we're going to talk about it. What was the experience like writing it by hand? What
118. 18:12was the experience like creating it with AI? Which one was better? Maybe the third week we'll do a hybrid where we'll
119. 18:19start out with a draft in pencil. We'll take a picture of that. We'll upload that to chat GBT and marvel at the fact
120. 18:26that it can read all of our crappy handwriting. And then we'll see if we can amplify the ideas that we wrote on paper with these
121. 18:35AI tools, right? It should teach them how to learn. When all knowledge is available, it's a skill to narrow it down. Yeah. That

124. 19:09another possible thing teachers could do is inquire in their class who's actually using AI right now, who's
125. 19:20excited about it, who's figured some stuff out with it. Let the students be the teachers. Show some generous
126. 19:26leadership. Show show some, you know, give opportunities for leadership skills. Andrea Lopez, AI hating is rampant.
127. 19:34People went from fear of AI to anger about data centers for AI. How do we help people see the possibility the the
128. 19:41positive possibilities in AI? Um I don't evangelizing doesn't work. If so, if someone is in amygdala hijack,
129. 19:59right? If they are afraid, if they're angry, if they've been spun up into a tizzy. I mean, you know, one of the things it seems to me
130. 20:11is that there is there's some some very focused amplification of anti-AI sentiment going on. Um and and you know we live in a country
131. 20:25right now which for the past 15 20 years politicians have been polarizing us and so I think AI just went into the bucket
132. 20:36of here's another thing that you can blame right you can blame this group of people over here you can blame you know
133. 20:44this group of people over here now you can blame AI right your misery doesn't have to do with you it's got to do with that thing. Um,
134. 20:58what I try to exercise when I meet people and I I try to do this on X a fair amount and it it most of the times
135. 21:05it doesn't work. I just try to acknowledge people's fear and anger. Like I say, I understand I understand
136. 21:13why you're angry and I understand and artists in particular, one of the one of the things that I believe um
137. 21:23is that we need artists exploring with AI. Right? Right now, if the only people playing with AI are the engineers and technologists,
138. 21:34then how AI gets used and what features get amplified are going to be the ones that resonate with with those people. If the artists
139. 21:44are all sitting on the sideline going, it just it's, you know, it steals from artists. I'm never going to use it. if
140. 21:48they never use it. Artists are always the ones who figure out how to use technologies in ways that that
141. 21:58most people would never consider, right? Because they're artists. They see the world in different ways. They synthesize
142. 22:03the world in different ways. So, we need artists. So, one of the things I'll do is if I, you know, if I
143. 22:09get comments from someone on a post that I make, oh, you just love AI, you're just, you know, you're a talentless
144. 22:15piece of [ __ ] rather than engage on that, say, "I understand why you feel that way. You know, I'm not a talentless
145. 22:23piece of [ __ ] I, you know, I happen to be a a creative professional my entire career. So sometimes I'll I'll sort of
146. 22:29let them know a little bit about my background." And then I say, "Quite frankly, like your passion for this is is important
147. 22:36and I would love for you to explore it and have a voice in this." And a lot of times they're angry and they just say,
148. 22:43you know, [ __ ] off or they just don't say anything. But sometimes they're like, "Oh, I hadn't thought about it
149. 22:47like that." Um, in the end, I I think it's just about creating a space where it's safe to have the conversation.
150. 23:00What I try to remind people is nothing is black and white. It's not all good or all bad, right? It's not if you used AI
151. 23:08in any way, then you're a thief, right? It's also not AI is the best thing ever and you everyone should know use it and love it,
152. 23:21but can we create a space where you can have the conversation? And that's the whole purpose of the AI salon. So why
153. 23:26we're having this conversation in here is as you run into people, invite them into the salon. Invite them into the conversation.
154. 23:34Say, have you ever hung out with people that spend a lot of time playing with these tools? Because when you're in a community like
155. 23:43the AI salon where people are thinking about these things critically and wrestling with the ethics, we have an
156. 23:50ethics group. We have an advocacy group. We're trying to figure out, you know, how do we talk about this stuff? How do we use this stuff?
157. 23:59How do we reconcile the fact that we've got a technology in our hand that in a lot of ways is invalidating
158. 24:0830 years worth of work, right? I got a degree and then a second degree and then a PhD in this particular specialty. I
159. 24:19have this very deep expertise and then for 20 years in business I I that expertise has been super valuable
160. 24:28and all of a sudden here comes a tool that's got that expertise too and it's free and it's instant. What do you do with that? I don't know.
161. 24:37Like that's something that we're all going to have to wrestle with that that the thing that was valuable before may
162. 24:45or may not be valuable in this new world. You're like, "Well, that sucks. They shouldn't do that." Who's they?
163. 24:54These things exist. There are multiple they are open- source models. The stuff's not going away. And we have to confront what it means
164. 25:04for us personally depending on how tightly we've got our our identity tied to that expertise and those tasks that we've done for 20 years.
165. 25:16We're going to have to confront that and and so being in the conversation I think is it. Kelly Camp. Sorry I'm late. I forgot we started

167. 25:34keeps up. Here's my You've been doing this for a long time, so you know this. Um but I will share with you when you start a business that's
168. 25:47consulting or you know doing services like you're doing um the worst thing the worst thing you can do is just not be
169. 25:55busy right that's miserable you're just like knocking on doors knocking on doors nothing's there what's even worse than
170. 26:02that is when you get too busy you're like oh my god I'm too busy I don't want to go sell new work because I'm too
171. 26:10busy. But then what happens is those contracts start drying up and at some point you're like, "Oh no, I need more
172. 26:18work." But you haven't been selling. So there's this gap now. So and I I never cracked that code. So So I would say,
173. 26:27Kelly, as overwhelmed as you are, don't stop the selling machine while you're while you're overwhelmed with how much
174. 26:33you have to deliver. Um, which is the most counterintuitive thing about that, but it's like it's a lesson I learn over
175. 26:39and over and over and over. Um, okay. Just in time. You mentioned the Omnia model was underhyped. Why? Okay. Um, hold please.

207. 32:29do that. Okay. The question was, um, I mentioned the Omni model as being underhyped. Um, where is that?
208. 32:44Yeah, there we go. You mentioned the Omni model was underhyped. Why? Um, okay. So, a couple of things. the the person that um that announced
209. 32:58the new Gemini Omni model which is this it it outputs video um was Demisabus and so Demisabus is the
210. 33:12creator of Deep Mind which was acquired by Google. He won the Nobel Prize for chemistry um for alphafold for the
211. 33:20protein folding um work that they've done at deep mind and and so deep mind is up up to some incredible stuff.
212. 33:27Deisabis has been thinking about AI and AGI and world models since he was a little boy. Like literally since he was
213. 33:36a little boy. This is this is kind of his life's work. um how people are kind of characterizing the new video output of the Gemini model
214. 33:50is as uh it's kind of like nano banana it's the nano banana moment for video. So, if you haven't used Nano Banana,
215. 34:01it's the image generation tool within Gemini and and it does text really well and it does it's just it's really good,
216. 34:09right? And then the new image model inside Chat GPT is also really good. They're kind of competing and and this new video model from Gemini
217. 34:20um does things really well. It does text really well. It does concepts really well. Well, it's not just a video model. The
218. 34:31whole model is both a large language model. It's it's a true multimodal model. It's the first one that I know
219. 34:38of, and I could stand corrected, but I don't think so. This is the first model that's anything in, anything out.
220. 34:48So, you could put in a PDF and say, "Turn this PDF into a video." You could put in a um video and say make this
221. 34:57video underwater and it will it will do that. The reason that I think it's underhyped is that we now have a model that that
222. 35:07understands all of what's in the large language model, right? all of the concepts on the language side of this,
223. 35:15but it also seems to understand how the world works, how things interact with one another, and how those things relate
224. 35:23to the concepts that sit underneath them. So, it understands physics and it understands math and it understands
225. 35:30history and it understands art and culture. It understands lighting and shadows. It it it understands how the world works.
226. 35:40And so if you think about all of the things that you can do with a large language model where if you give it more
227. 35:45context, if you tell it about a company that you're working with, you could now say, "Why don't we make a video of,
228. 35:59let's say, some worker has an idea for a new way of manufacturing something. Let's make a video of what that might
229. 36:06look like on the factory floor and make like an explainer video of that concept. And then you could say, "Okay,
230. 36:16now um now make it a spreadsheet that that projects the the costs and profit if we took that approach and you know

389. 1:08:53they needed to be purged. The other thing about the.com era as as transformative as it was the primary innovation of the worldwide
390. 1:09:09web like the internet had already been there and we got all sorts of layered technologies on top of the core
391. 1:09:17innovation. But the core innovation of the worldwide web was you could click on a hyperlink and jump from one computer to another computer.
392. 1:09:26That was the core innovation. Click, click. You're you're you're in France. You're in California. You're in
393. 1:09:35an encyclopedia. You're in a whatever magazine, right? Click, click, click. It took 30 years for that single
394. 1:09:47technology to kind of develop and mature. AI is like a thousand of those. The G in GPT, the the generative part of
395. 1:10:03of generative AI, the fact that it is generating net new content is a fundamentally different thing than how computers have ever behaved.
396. 1:10:16We've never had a technology where it could generate net new things and everyone's like, "Oh, it's just a
397. 1:10:23stochcastic parrot and it's it's just everything is from the past." No. Depending on how you use it, it is
398. 1:10:33generating new things. And if you put your ideas in it, you can get it to amplify those and do net new things. And
399. 1:10:48We don't even know what it is yet, right? It's it's it's doing for the intellect what the steam engine did for muscles, right? It's
400. 1:11:02augmenting human intellect. It's not just it's easier to find information. It is net new knowledge. My very first
401. 1:11:12experience with chat GPT was I wrote a Python application that made API calls and generated social media content. I've never written a line
402. 1:11:23of Python in my life. It's just a fundamentally different thing that it makes computers do than they've
403. 1:11:32ever done before. Everything else up to this point we've had to learn. Right? What Google did was said,
404. 1:11:40you type in a search term and I'll show you all of the information and then it's on you to go learn how to program in Python.
405. 1:11:50Chat GPT changed that. Generative AI changed that. So, so one thing is I don't even know that we're in the full
406. 1:11:57hype cycle yet as as insane as that sounds. The other thing is is it a bubble or not? I don't like is it a bubble or not?
407. 1:12:07Kind of implies that we're either going to hit a wall or we're going to um that this is kind of like NFTTS, right?
408. 1:12:20Blockchain and NFTs went through this big hype cycle and everyone's like I got to have NFTs and I went through it for
409. 1:12:26two years, two and a half years. And what was fascinating about the NFT thing is the deeper that you dug into
410. 1:12:34NFTTS, the the more [ __ ] they felt. The opposite is true with AI. The more you dig into it, the more profound it

424. 1:14:47really I don't really I I don't think it's a good idea, but like they're going to give me $10 million, so I'm going to
425. 1:14:53go do something with that." Like, it was so frothy and and people were funding anything that anyone that knew anything about
426. 1:15:05HTML was getting money. This isn't that. I mean, there's there's a lot of there's a lot of money being
427. 1:15:15thrown at the big companies. There's a lot of money being thrown at anyone who can, you know, if you're doing anything
428. 1:15:21with agents right now, you can get people to give you money. So, there's some stupidity, but the underlying tech
429. 1:15:28is getting better exponentially fast. So, the the potential value of what's going to be created with with computers that generate
430. 1:15:42just says to me, we we the hype hasn't even begun. Like, we don't even know what this is yet. We knew what the hyperlink was. We knew
431. 1:15:53what the hyperlink was, right? Um, so anyway, Kylo's not going to miss this wave. I'm not. I mean, well, you know, actually the answer to
432. 1:16:08your question is if if this is a bubble and the bubble bursts and all of a sudden just AI stops working and
433. 1:16:16everyone turns off their the existing data centers and we can't use chat GPT anymore, then everyone will just go back to being
434. 1:16:25knowledge workers and everything will be fine. I just I don't I don't see a world where that happens. I see a world where these things get
435. 1:16:34better and better and better and better and better to the point that it transforms every single job, including physical labor.
436. 1:16:47Because the humanoid robots are once the once the world models like Gemini Omni get good, which probably is this year

446. 1:18:42going away, then I think we need to [ __ ] talk about it and we need to figure it out. And like one of the things that we
447. 1:18:51figured out in this community is that the fact that AI is frictionless is not always a good thing. That the friction of being human
448. 1:19:03is actually really good. and people that have sort of blown through their the the uh you know the endorphin
449. 1:19:14adrenaline rush of AI like I can do all this [ __ ] I can do all this [ __ ] Holy [ __ ] On the other side of that is exhaustion.
450. 1:19:24But there's also an understanding that oh I get it. AI is this frictionfree creation thing. So there's some places
451. 1:19:34where that's really good. And then there's other places where adding friction into the conversation or into
452. 1:19:40the creative process is also really good. I'm going to go sit on a bench, right? I'm going to think about things.

454. 1:19:56this. That back and forth is kind of a leveling up of of how we use these tools. I hope we can see this. We baby boomers won't see much.

462. 1:21:26technical advancement. But it's happening right now. We're going to experience it like a deer in the headlights. a deer in
463. 1:21:37the headlights. Except the car is coming at us. It's coming at us at the speed of sound, right? It's not going 60. It's like
464. 1:21:5130 years more. I don't think it's going to be 30 years. I think it's going to be Well, I think I think within the next
465. 1:21:58five years, everything's going to get [ __ ] up and then it'll probably take another 10 years after that for things to settle.
466. 1:22:06Um, but we'll adapt. We're humans. We'll adapt. I think the analog economy gets really strong. People rediscover human
467. 1:22:16connection. People rediscover being in the world, being in dirt. And AI is going to just go go go. And
468. 1:22:29then we're going to get to choose where we want to play. I think most Gen X has known this was coming. We've grown up
469. 1:22:35with the possibility. You know, it's funny, Valerie. We've grown up with the possibility, but like I think back to
470. 1:22:41myself watching Star Trek and Star Wars and all that stuff. And just like Star Trek in particular, like the little uh
471. 1:22:49the the not the vocoder, whatever the thing was where you flipped it up and you could communicate the little
472. 1:22:54communicator. Like we're literally living with the devices that were, you know, science fiction when we were kids. Um,
473. 1:23:04and even though we had this, I'm like, "Yeah, but you could never you could never have like a C3PO that just
474. 1:23:10understands all the languages. That's not going to happen in my lifetime." Well, we have that now, right? We have
475. 1:23:16it. Um, wouldn't it be great if the rat race of the industrial age turns out to have just been growing pains? I I so
476. 1:23:25this is the place where I think I I I deviate from what where a lot of people think this is going. I really do think
477. 1:23:34there's a possibility here that AI undoes the industrial revolution. It undoes the time equals money and you're
478. 1:23:46you're someone who has to trade your time for money. And I think if we if we manage this right, AI does all the [ __ ]
479. 1:23:58and humans are freed to reconnect with one another. So I think it's possible that that AI basically takes over the
480. 1:24:08industrial revolution, does all the [ __ ] and then we just get to be people again. Wait, let's see. They hate AI just
481. 1:24:21because of the word AI. They reject it because it has an AI label. This week I posted a pseudo song on Tik Tok that was
482. 1:24:29for sharing your music. They loved it at first. Then they commented my song. Oh, that then they commented that it was
483. 1:24:37a song and was on my Panda AI account. Then [ __ ] hit the fan and now it's the worst song in the world. Yeah. Exactly.
484. 1:24:44Exactly. Like we but that's every technological advancement in history has had the haters. Everyone digital camera,
485. 1:24:52the calculator, the printing press, all of them. We need teleportation. I know. I'm excited for that future. Kind of like
486. 1:25:00being the new caveman. Yeah. Soon's on my CarPlay now. It was cool listening to the songs easily. All right. Um, weekend homework.
487. 1:25:20I've written about this stuff exhaustically, like half a million words. I think there are lots of opportunities for humans that don't have
488. 1:25:27to sell their time for money. It's no utopia, but it's not all bad either. Yeah. like like the the the
489. 1:25:39fear about job loss is real and and and I think is going to be painful and I think we'll figure it out. Right.
490. 1:25:54We got through co did not seem solvable and yet somehow we got through that. This is going to be like that. It's
491. 1:26:05going to be more intense and and and I think more profound. But we'll get through it. But yeah, I think that one of the things that people
492. 1:26:18are going to realize is, oh yeah, that that work I did was was mind-numbing. Like I I went to school because I wanted
493. 1:26:26to do X and then I got to a job and I had to do all this other [ __ ] and now I don't have to do that other [ __ ] I can
494. 1:26:33just go back to my vision of why I got into it in the first place. Like I really do think that's where we go.
495. 1:26:41Mongol says, "We're just pawns in a game of life." Well, yeah. I mean, listen, in the end, we all check out of here at
496. 1:26:50some point anyway. We might as well have some fun along the way. Um, I would say here's a good thing to do
