13:24 API and nobody built

13:33 GPT and all of a sudden all the power of
13:36 generative
13:39 AI was sitting behind this simple little
13:42 box that looked like a Google search

15:50 day which is like laughably low normally

25:35 about that energy like in my graduating
25:38 class from high school I think it was

25:44 people out of 250 people

25:56 four and I remember talking about
25:59 you know it's 12th grade we're
26:01 graduating I'm getting the [ __ ] out of
26:04 here you you getting out of here and
26:06 they're like no why would you leave

26:18 stay and just some people are like that
26:20 right some people grow up and they it
26:24 wasn't that I hated the people it wasn't
26:26 that I hated anything about it it was
26:29 perfectly fine but like the thought of

26:35 do like it like it it literally couldn't
26:39 register in the gray matter and and what
26:43 was fascinating about it was to the
26:45 people that were like well why would you
26:47 leave
26:49 it it couldn't register for them why you
26:52 would want to be anywhere else other
26:54 than that and especially not New York

27:30 State and then I transferred to the main
27:32 main campus Penn State
27:35 Main and then I was supposed to
27:38 go I had a I had a full scholarship to
27:41 the Alabama Shakespeare Festival which
27:44 which sounds like an oxymoron but they
27:46 actually had a really nice theater down
27:47 there from A1 to french green beans you
27:49 never know what you're going to get

28:16 the show he was the author of Agnes of
28:19 God he wrote that play and consequent

28:25 actor he's a really funny actor and uh
28:30 it was directed by this guy named Paul
28:33 Giovani who was a Broadway
28:35 director and so at the end of the
28:39 summer he offered me a role he was doing
28:42 a show at the only theater in uh in
28:45 Washington
28:46 DC in October and so in August he said
28:51 actually right around this time of year
28:53 he said hey Kyle do you want to you want
28:55 to go do an equity show in Washington DC
28:58 I'm directing was it was the crucifer of
29:00 blood it was a Sherlock Holmes
29:05 play and I'm like well I got a full ride
29:08 to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and
29:09 he's like okay well you don't have to
29:13 go he was very he was cool Paul Giovani
29:17 like that's fine you don't have to go
29:18 I'm like no I'll go I'll take

29:21 it cuz I was getting my Equity card and
29:25 so I was like [ __ ] it I'm going to get
29:27 my Equity card go do the show in
29:29 Washington DC and I'm going to move to
29:30 New York City and that's what I did I
29:33 called up the the uh head of the program
29:35 at the Alabama shakespere Festival two
29:38 years or two weeks before I'm supposed
29:39 to be there I was like uh
29:44 hey I got an equity show I'm moving to
29:47 New York City he's like you'll never
29:49 work in this town again I'm like tuscalo
29:52 Alabama I'm good

30:34 it was a great decision actually oh you
30:35 want to know something [ __ ] amazing
30:38 so I worked with John peel Meer in the
30:41 summer of this was the summer

30:47 87 yeah yeah I graduated graduated in '
30:51 87 so was at the the three peny Opera
30:55 was at the mount Greta Playhouse in
30:57 Pennsylvania in open air theat
30:59 theater and uh that was

31:06 crucifer of blood in Washington DC for
31:08 whatever it is 3 we run or four week

31:12 run and I moved to New York City I
31:15 mov into an apartment with two other
31:18 actors that I knew from the Utah
31:20 Shakespeare Festival that I worked with
31:22 the year
31:24 before and so it's like my
31:28 first or second day in New York City and
31:31 I'm like I want to go see Time Square so
31:33 I take the subway down to Time
31:36 Square and it's rush hour and I'm
31:39 walking through Time Square shut up
31:46 Champion you good all right so I'm
31:50 walking I'm walking through Time Square
31:52 in rush hour and you know Time Square in
31:54 rush hour is like just it's a [ __ ]
31:56 sea of humanity right [ __ ] people
31:59 everywhere I'm walking in here I like

32:10 around and it was John peel me so like
32:13 my second day in New York City in Time

32:29 that New York is a weirdly small town

33:53 like people are just like I'm going to

34:08 lived in Oklahoma yeah it's weird man
34:11 it's weird the other thing that is is is

34:17 um you can't really describe is driving
34:20 in New York city so driving in New York

39:06 Merill he's an actor that's done some
39:10 work and he had an agent and his agent
39:13 said oh some of some of her clients were
39:16 getting jobs at FAO Schwarz and she she
39:18 gave the name of this dude and so I went
39:21 down to FAO Schwarz the big toy store on
39:23 Fifth Avenue bottom of Central
39:26 Park and they were like well you know
39:30 what do you do and I'm like I don't know
39:33 I juggle and they're like okay you want
39:37 to sell
39:42 yo-yos so so my first job in New York
39:45 City was selling yo-yos at FAO
39:48 Schwarz so that was a good one
39:58 I met Walter KRON kite I met Keith

40:07 right at the top of the escalator you'd
40:08 come up the escalator and I'd be there
40:10 doing yo-yo tricks do you have access to

41:08 of the one of the challenges as an actor
41:10 in New York City is you can't get work
41:13 unless you have an equity card you can't
41:15 get an equity card unless you get
41:19 hired and then you can't get an agent
41:22 unless you have work and you right and
41:25 you can't get work if you don't have an
41:26 agent
41:28 I heard some
41:29 ideas oh I need some ideas for trying
41:32 voice please so Source Camp has access

41:41 idea so um so I joined sort of this
41:46 acting class it was called drama project
41:48 it was it was a workshop for playwrights
41:51 and directors and actors and actors had
41:53 to audition to get in and playwrights
41:55 had to be invited and directors had to
41:57 be invited invited and everybody paid 40
41:59 bucks a month or whatever it was and
42:02 that's where I met with my wife and
42:05 um so we were doing we we were doing
42:08 this and you know we were all trying to
42:09 get work and trying to get agents and
42:11 trying to get plays and trying to get
42:13 auditions and all that [ __ ] and and what
42:17 we decided
42:18 was well why don't we just put on our
42:21 own plays and so we started a theater
42:24 company called new voice theater um
42:28 the producer was a guy named Evan
42:30 Bergman he had access to funds and could
42:34 kind of fund it and get it off the
42:36 ground and so he did that for 4 and a
42:38 half
42:40 years and then after that you know I got
42:43 tired of doing free theater and I was
42:45 doing desktop publishing as my day job
42:47 so I'm you know making annual reports
42:51 for American Express down at down at
42:53 World Trade Center actually um or right
42:55 across the street from it and and uh I'm
42:59 doing desktop publishing
43:01 and and then I I decide I know I'm going
43:03 to write myself an acting career so my
43:05 buddy Brian
43:07 dyra I said I have this idea for a
43:09 screenplay and he goes well I have an
43:10 idea for a screenplay and I was like
43:11 well [ __ ] why don't we write a
43:12 screenplay so every night so you know
43:14 how I do these things every night it was
43:16 a similar sort of commitment Brian and I
43:18 committed to
43:20 write every night five nights a week all
43:23 day Saturday and all day Sunday for a
43:26 year
43:28 and so in a 2-year period um I
43:35 wrote five five screen plays with
43:38 Brian one on my own and one with another
43:41 guy and then one where it was Brian and
43:44 it was three of
43:46 us and that was pretty cool we started a
43:50 fake management
43:51 company called Outlaw management cuz we
43:54 didn't have agents so we're like well
43:56 [ __ ] it we'll be our own agent
43:59 so so we got casting
44:01 breakdowns we got we we were sending
44:04 screenplays to Hollywood we had a whole
44:06 database of of Hollywood producers we
44:09 were sending screenplays to so that's
44:12 pretty cool we got one of the screen
44:14 plays options we didn't sell
44:16 any and then here's coming back around

44:48 on 23rd
44:49 street called East West

45:08 and I had just joined a dialup bulletin
45:11 board system I don't know if you
45:13 remember dialup
45:14 bbs's but there was one in New York City
45:17 there was a dialup BBS called
45:19 Echo started by Stacy
45:22 horn and it was cool it had like New
45:25 York City like you know reporter
45:27 professional reporters were on there
45:29 hackers were on there the famous hacker
45:32 fiber optic was on there we would have
45:35 [Music]
45:38 parties and so I'm I'm people in there
45:42 are kind of talking about this thing
45:43 called the internet and they're talking
45:45 about goer servers and FTP servers
45:48 and and they sort of tell you how you
45:50 get there and you have to command line
45:52 your way over there so I'm geeking out a
45:54 little bit on the internet but it's
45:55 really Technical and I'm not all that
45:57 technical there there were like full-on
45:59 [ __ ] hackers in there and they like
46:01 oh it's relatively trivial you just you
46:04 hu the GP and you command Lin
46:07 SL you know that [ __ ] you know like
46:10 Engineers
46:11 do they talk about it like it's trivial
46:14 and you're like my head

46:21 hurts so all that was going
46:25 on and I remember seeing bus ads for
46:29 Wired Magazine and it was the first
46:32 issue of Wired

46:41 and I went to buy the first issue of
46:43 Wired Magazine and it was sold out still
46:46 regret
46:48 that
46:50 um cuz I
46:53 have I have every issue of Wired
46:55 Magazine through
47:01 like the first three years something
47:02 like that maybe the first four years it
47:05 was a lot Wired Magazine was like a
47:07 Bible back then so anyway I was into
47:10 this stuff and I was I was starting to
47:11 learn about this thing called the
47:12 worldwide
47:14 web
47:18 and so I went to Echo to dial up
47:22 BBS and nobody
47:25 um nobody was really talking about the
47:27 web and there were there were some there
47:29 were forums different forums within Echo
47:32 and so I reached out to Stacy horn and I
47:34 said it doesn't look like there's a web
47:36 Forum can I start a web Forum she's like
47:38 sure she didn't give a [ __ ] you want to
47:41 go start some so I started the web Forum
47:43 on Echo and you know found the seven
47:46 people on Echo that were interested in
47:48 the worldwide
47:49 web and I started teaching myself HTML
47:53 and came up with the idea for urban
47:55 desires which was the one of the the
47:57 first online
47:59 magazines taught myself enough
48:02 HTML to like actually you know make a
48:06 web page and put images on it and
48:10 hyperlinks to the little articles that
48:13 you know we
48:15 wrote and I did that on a vacation I
48:18 took I took my Max 660 AV and our two
48:22 dogs and my wife and we went on vacation
48:26 and I spent the whole vacation
48:28 this is my vacations are it's just a
48:31 different venue to do to do
48:34 work vacation stress me the [ __ ]

49:33 Brooklyn and I realize in kind of a flop
49:36 sweat I made a website but I don't know
49:39 how to put it on the

49:58 the web forum and it was John

50:05 don't know seven eight years ago I'm
50:07 still you know decently in touch with
50:11 him and I said I don't know how to put
50:14 my magazine on the internet and he said
50:17 oh I know this server in California
50:20 here's the phone

50:25 number so if you're a youngster which
50:28 you're probably not in here people that
50:30 like me tend to be a little little of
50:32 the older persuasion but if you're a
50:34 youngster we used to have to have our
50:36 computers call up other computers and
50:38 ask them for permission if we could if
50:41 they could
50:42 talk so I took this phone number and I
50:45 called this computer in
50:51 California modem modem
50:54 sound and I uploaded my files to the
50:57 this computer in California and then I
51:01 was on the
51:02 internet I was like that's

51:10 what it's very
51:13 anticlimactic and
51:17 then the world

51:25 changed 3 weeks later
51:29 3 weeks
51:30 later and what Urban desires was by the
51:33 way
51:35 was I looked at the internet and what I
51:38 saw on it was
51:40 engineers and research scientists and
51:44 Librarians and
51:45 technologists and
51:48 academics and what I didn't see were
51:52 artists and I thought why don't I do a
51:54 magazine that's about art and culture
51:57 cuz it'll stand
51:59 out cuz the only thing that's there is
52:01 like PhD dissertations and they were
52:04 boring for me cuz you know
52:09 literacy

52:24 add yeah yeah there you go I remember
52:27 remember making a long-distance phone
52:28 call to a BBS to download a postcript
52:30 font I definitely did that so 3 weeks
52:34 after I publish Urban desires I get a
52:37 note on

52:41 Forum I don't remember who sent it to me
52:43 but they said hey
52:44 Kyle did you know that Urban desires was
52:48 written
52:49 about in liberon the Parisian News
52:53 Daily I had never even heard of liberon
52:59 I was like no really what's that oh it's
53:04 the biggest newspaper in
53:06 France oh

53:12 cool so I was living in New York City
53:16 what do you do when you living in New
53:17 York
53:19 City you go to the international news
53:22 stand and you can get International
53:24 newspapers so the following Sunday I
53:27 went to the international news stand in
53:28 the middle of Time Square back to Time
53:32 Square Yeah couple of couple of big
53:35 moments in my life were right in the
53:36 middle of Time Square that's pretty cool
53:38 I never made that connection

53:49 um and I buy the copy of liberti and I'm
53:52 flipping through this
53:54 newspaper and then I just hit this page
53:57 and it says in French something
53:59 something Urban desires and there's
54:02 screenshots of the website that I made
54:05 on vacation in the Pennsylvania
54:07 mountains I uploaded from my apartment
54:10 in Brooklyn to a computer in California
54:13 written about in Paris France 3 weeks
54:18 later and in that
54:21 moment I knew that the world had changed

54:30 and I mean like it wasn't like oh yeah
54:33 the world
54:35 changed it was like I had chills running
54:38 up and down my body I was like shaking I
54:42 was on the verge of
54:47 tears because I was standing there with
54:50 this piece of knowledge
55:00 that that everything was
55:01 different that geography had just
55:05 collapsed that that time had just
55:09 compressed that everything was going to
55:12 be done this way like I knew it like I
55:14 like it was like a [ __ ] beam from
55:18 Heaven everything's
55:21 different and I'm standing in the middle
55:23 of Time Square like there's [ __ ]
55:26 taxis flying by me and people pushing by
55:28 me and you know people cussing and
55:32 actors in stinky
55:37 costumes those [ __ ] Time Square
55:39 actors that look like Bugs Bunny their
55:41 stinky [ __ ]
55:43 costumes and it hit me nobody here knows
55:46 what's going
55:48 on holy
55:50 [ __ ] like everything's
55:55 different and also
55:59 knew in that moment
56:04 that how lucky I

56:10 was to be in any
56:16 way participating in
56:20 it because when I was in seventh grade I
56:23 got I walked into my first
56:28 classroom my a math classroom and there
56:31 were Radio Shack tr8s on every
56:35 desk and we learned basic programming on
56:38 trash 80s in
56:42 1977 and I
56:44 remember having a realization then that
56:48 PCS were going to change everything and
56:49 that and that it felt very much
56:55 like this must have been what being
56:57 alive when the printing press was
56:59 invented was like and I remember I
57:01 remember being heartbroken that I was
57:04 just too
57:05 young to be at the at the at the
57:08 beginning at the start of the PC
57:12 Revolution and I knew that these things
57:14 don't come along that often so I figured
57:16 in my lifetime that was it that I missed
57:18 it and I was actually really sad about
57:20 that for a long time and so standing
57:23 there in Time Square holding this
57:25 newspaper with this big article in
57:27 French of my my online magazine and
57:30 realizing oh my God this is one of those
57:35 this is one of those
57:41 Technologies I mean it was moving it was
57:43 [ __ ]

57:49 spiritual and so you know I also started
57:54 um agency.com
57:56 so so once I kind of had you know
57:59 epiphanies about about um all this
58:03 internet stuff in a 3-week period I
58:06 started the worldwide web artist
58:08 Consortium which was a community of web
58:12 enthusiasts web
58:14 optimists I started Urban desires and I
58:17 started agency.com and agency.com was
58:19 one of the first digital agencies and I
58:22 was a chief creative officer there

58:27 and what was what was amazing
58:30 amazing about the early days of
58:32 agency.com is that we were making it up
58:37 like there weren't courses in
58:39 information design there wasn't ux ux
58:42 hadn't been invented I mean there was
58:44 software but like not on the internet
58:47 you
58:48 know not with this HTML
58:51 [Music]
58:53 stuff and everyone that worked
58:57 in agency.com or or in any capacity in
59:00 those
59:02 days there was a certain kind of person
59:04 that worked at a company like that they
59:08 were curious they were
59:11 adventurous they were generous they were
59:16 playful because the only way you could
59:19 figure [ __ ] out was to play with it well
59:20 let me try this well let me try that we
59:23 had we had this thing that that happened
59:25 organically um
59:27 called geek and tells and a geek and
59:29 tell was someone in the office would
59:32 figure something out and they' go oh hey
59:34 guys come here I figured out how to
59:36 animate images really and and like all
59:39 the Geeks would sort of gather around
59:42 the person that had figured something
59:43 out and they're like yeah you go like
59:44 this and you do this and you do this
59:46 kind and look it Wiggles we're like and
59:49 then everyone would run back to their
59:50 desk and they would they would try it it
59:54 was [ __ ] magical and we all felt
59:57 lucky that we were getting to do this we

1:00:07 landed the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit
1:00:10 Issue time in consumer marketing Hitachi
1:00:13 Global GTE which was a phone company
1:00:16 back then um American Express student
1:00:21 and we actually put sunglasses on the
1:00:23 American Express Gladiator dude we we're
1:00:26 like he should have sunglasses it's it's
1:00:29 for the college it's for American
1:00:31 Express student for colleges he should
1:00:33 be cool we got that through corporate
1:00:36 the American Express student site the
1:00:38 Gladiator had [ __ ] sunglasses
1:00:41 on
1:00:43 um we got metti we landed metti this was
1:00:47 all in like 4
1:00:49 months some of the biggest brands in the
1:00:52 world and we're just like holy
1:00:54 [ __ ] clay tury at one point he worked
1:00:58 for us for a while and he
1:01:01 said it was late one night we're all
1:01:04 tired and we're just like marveling we
1:01:07 closed another piece of business or
1:01:08 something like that we're just marveling

1:02:11 and some nft stuff and I was I was sort
1:02:14 of getting reconnected with with my
1:02:17 passion for technology my company Story
1:02:20 vines 12 years old we've kind of you
1:02:22 know we've built the technology it it
1:02:24 wasn't really innovating it was you know
1:02:26 it was just kind of we were selling it
1:02:27 and delivering stuff and so I kind of
1:02:29 stepped away from innovating and
1:02:31 building

1:02:36 stable diffusion did I say mid journey I
1:02:38 meant stable diffusion stable diffusion
1:02:40 and dream Booth started a little art art

1:03:28 brilliant and so Chris called me and he
1:03:32 said I want you to you know are you
1:03:34 willing to talk to my friend
1:03:36 Leah um who's a professional
1:03:39 photographer and I see you're doing all
1:03:40 this AI image stuff and she's
1:03:44 afraid like she she she wants to know
1:03:47 about this stuff and you know she's
1:03:49 she's a photographer so she's like you
1:03:51 know is this going to H how we doing
1:03:53 here is this going to be okay am I going
1:03:55 to still have a
1:03:56 career and um so I talked to her so she
1:03:59 and I got to talk in and we just we
1:04:00 really hit it
1:04:02 off and she had such a cool attitude she
1:04:06 was like I don't know anything about AI
1:04:08 but I want to try it and um I went
1:04:12 through the transition from film to
1:04:15 digital and and we just we just like
1:04:18 really hit it off we had a really good
1:04:19 talk and then a week later chat jpt came
1:04:23 out
1:04:30 and I started playing with it I was like
1:04:33 huh this is interesting and I started
1:04:36 doing the little parlor tricks right it
1:04:39 was writing poems it was writing this it
1:04:41 was writing that it was clear to me that
1:04:44 it was this was way more than a Google
1:04:47 search it looked like a Google search
1:04:48 box but this was way more than a Google
1:04:54 Search and then one
1:04:57 night I'm watching TV with with the
1:05:00 misses and I lost the battle you know if
1:05:03 if if I win the battle we're watching
1:05:06 the The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch
1:05:10 or greatest catch or whatever the [ __ ]
1:05:14 if I lose the battle we're watching
1:05:16 [ __ ] costume dramas all right so this
1:05:19 is a costume drama
1:05:23 night this one you'll like will I
1:05:30 I remember we were we were living in New
1:05:32 York City she kept dragging me to
1:05:34 [ __ ] costume dramas movie after movie
1:05:36 and I was just like I [ __ ] hate them

1:06:04 looks at me and she kind of resign

1:06:21 GPT and for years you know I've been
1:06:24 thinking about getting back into
1:06:26 programming or building or something and
1:06:28 people like oh you should learn python
1:06:29 you should learn python you should learn
1:06:31 Python and I'm like oh I should learn
1:06:32 python I should learn python I should
1:06:34 learn Python and then I would try to go
1:06:36 Learn Python and I'm like oh God this
1:06:38 feels like
1:06:39 work I actually have to learn this and I
1:06:42 would go Google [ __ ] and there'd be like
1:06:44 tutorials and I'd look at the tutorial
1:06:46 like I don't want to [ __ ] so I never
1:06:49 learned python but I heard chat GPT
1:06:52 could write
1:06:53 code so I went to chat GPT and I
1:06:58 said give me some python code that takes
1:07:00 an input and like uh process it or
1:07:04 stores it or I forget what I said and it
1:07:07 just vomited out this code I was like oh
1:07:11 cool and then I had this panicked moment
1:07:14 where I realized I don't know how to run
1:07:15 python code like I haven't done this
1:07:17 [ __ ] in
1:07:21 decades and and something started to
1:07:23 unravel in my mind which
1:07:27 was that feeling of being
1:07:30 incompetent especially if you've if
1:07:33 you've got a particular kind of
1:07:34 personality where shame is your love
1:07:38 language if you're if you're tough on
1:07:41 yourself
1:07:44 um that feeling of oh [ __ ] I don't know
1:07:48 how to do
1:07:49 this
1:07:51 historically you would have to call up
1:07:53 your buddy Jim that knew how to do that
1:07:55 and go uh Jim uh hey uh I know how to do
1:07:58 this I definitely know how to do this
1:08:00 but could you just confirm like what's
1:08:01 the best way to run python code and
1:08:03 you'd have to like fall on your sword
1:08:05 and admit that you were an
1:08:07 idiot and I was like oh I don't have to
1:08:10 even think of who to call let me just
1:08:12 see if chat GPT can help and I said hey
1:08:14 chat GPT I don't know how to run python
1:08:17 code it's like not a
1:08:19 problem and so it taught me how to run
1:08:21 python code and it introduced me to
1:08:23 repet which was a website I could just
1:08:24 copy and paste python code and run
1:08:27 it and so I copied my code over and I
1:08:30 ran it and it gave me an error I was
1:08:32 like ah [ __ ] and like I got washed over
1:08:35 with that Feeling Again of like you're a
1:08:37 [ __ ] idiot you don't know anything
1:08:38 you big fat Fu [ __ ] fat dumb
1:08:42 dumb I have a swell in her
1:08:46 dialogue I was like ah [ __ ] I was like
1:08:49 oh [ __ ] hey chat GPT uh it gave me an
1:08:54 error and C tvt was like no problem
1:08:57 you're missing this library and I was
1:09:01 like okay how do I install the library
1:09:05 and like what I'm what I'm what I'm
1:09:06 learning in kind of real time is that
1:09:09 how you interact with chat gbt is a lot
1:09:11 less like push a button give me an
1:09:13 answer and a lot more like you're having
1:09:17 a
1:09:19 conversation with someone that actually
1:09:21 knows what they're doing I was like oh
1:09:25 and so I said okay I how do I install
1:09:28 that Library it knew I was on repet cuz
1:09:30 it had give me given me that site and it
1:09:32 said in the lower leftand corner of the
1:09:35 screen you're going to see this
1:09:37 button and I flipped over and I looked
1:09:39 at the lower leftand corner of the

1:10:22 AI taking an input from a user and
1:10:25 generating five pieces of social media
1:10:28 content it was [ __ ] remarkable like
1:10:32 my face [ __ ] melted it was my first
1:10:34 true Kevin mallister moment it
1:10:39 was I'm like honey you can't believe
1:10:42 what is she's like that's nice we're
1:10:45 watching The Butler about to come
1:10:49 on and I got that same [ __ ] chill
1:10:53 like that beam from the heavens
1:10:58 where it hit me in that
1:11:01 moment holy [ __ ] the world just changed
1:11:04 and no one knows it
1:11:08 yet because my experience with AI up to
1:11:11 that point was not
1:11:14 pleasant it was oh you want to use AI
1:11:17 okay here's this thing called tensor
1:11:18 flow so you're going to learn the tensor
1:11:20 programming language and then you're
1:11:22 going to learn about model weights and
1:11:24 embeddings and and I huh
1:11:31 what a degree from Stanford would be
1:11:34 preferred if you're going to do this but
1:11:35 you know we made it easy for
1:11:38 you it was
1:11:40 horrible and here I was sitting on the
1:11:43 other side of a
1:11:45 90minut application development
1:11:47 conversation I had where I
1:11:50 wrote a python
1:11:52 application but I didn't write a line of
1:11:54 python code

1:12:01 Square in New York
1:12:03 City holding that
1:12:06 newspaper and I said holy [ __ ] this is
1:12:10 one of those here we go
1:12:15 again that night I started this Tik Tok
1:12:21 channel that night I sent a note to Leah
1:12:24 fasten and I said let's start the AI
1:12:29 Salon because the first thing I did in
1:12:32 1994 when I realized this [ __ ] was
1:12:35 powerful was I started the worldwide web
1:12:37 artist Consortium cuz I wanted to find
1:12:39 all the people that knew [ __ ]
1:12:40 anything about the worldwide web there
1:12:42 and there weren't
1:12:44 any it was a group of people that were
1:12:48 curious and optimistic about what was
1:12:52 possible with
1:12:53 HTML and the AI
1:12:56 Salon which if you don't
1:13:00 know is
1:13:08 there is that Community for AI for
1:13:10 generative AI not just AI generative
1:13:16 AI the
1:13:18 birth of what this group is about was
1:13:21 November 30th 2022 the first meeting of
1:13:24 this group was December 7th 2022 7 days
1:13:28 after chat GPT
1:13:31 launched because the thing I learned in
1:13:34 1994 is the most important
1:13:37 thing if you're at the beginning of a
1:13:40 transformative technology
1:13:47 movement is be in the conversation be
1:13:51 building be looking at it be paying
1:13:54 attention to it be hang in out with
1:13:57 people that are trying to figure this
1:13:59 [ __ ]
1:14:02 out that's what this Channel's about
1:14:05 that's what the AI salon's about that's
1:14:07 what I'm
1:14:10 about cuz this isn't about any
1:14:13 individual technology it's not about

1:14:49 of passion a sense of
1:14:52 playfulness a sense of empathy

1:15:15 taking weekends off so I've been doing

1:15:51 which as I'm watching other people that
1:15:54 are doing this coming up with their
1:15:56 monetization plans I'm like maybe I
1:15:58 should monetize something at some
1:16:02 point
1:16:04 um
1:16:05 but

1:16:09 that's that's not that's not what this
1:16:11 is about at all like even even if I
1:16:13 ended up monetizing something like
1:16:15 everything right now feels temporary
1:16:17 everything you learn is temporary
1:16:19 everything you think you have mastered
1:16:22 is temporary the thing that you think is
1:16:24 the most brilliant thing you've ever
1:16:25 seen in the history of
1:16:28 things will become a feature that they
1:16:31 give away for free 6 months from now and
1:16:34 that's how it was with the with the
1:16:35 worldwide web like every like all the
1:16:37 Innovations like I remember the day we
1:16:39 we figured out how to how to make a
1:16:42 banner ad that had animation in
1:16:45 it and then flash came out and then we
1:16:48 could actually do full we could do
1:16:49 interactive games inside a banner it was
1:16:52 super cool we were innovating the [ __ ]
1:16:54 out of things
1:16:56 we
1:16:58 invented when we first started building
1:17:01 websites the center
1:17:04 tag did not apply to
1:17:07 images you know how sometimes I'm in
1:17:09 here and I'm like hey chat GPT uh could
1:17:13 we please have a search box to search
1:17:16 for our [ __ ] prompt
1:17:18 history you [ __ ] morons please I was
1:17:22 like that with why doesn't the center
1:17:24 tag center images so we invented a
1:17:27 series of pixel High transparent images
1:17:30 that we could scooch pictures over in a
1:17:33 web page because they were always left
1:17:34 aligned and so we invented a whole
1:17:37 system to scooch images to the center of
1:17:40 the page it was [ __ ] brilliant and
1:17:44 necessary and completely useless as soon
1:17:46 as they fixed the fact that the center
1:17:49 tag didn't work on
1:17:50 images that's where we are with
1:17:53 AI and that's why the first step that we
1:17:57 talk about in the AI Salon in your AI
1:17:59 literacy journey is
1:18:01 play play first don't feel like you have
1:18:04 to learn it don't feel like you have to
1:18:07 master it don't feel like you have to
1:18:09 [ __ ] do prompt
1:18:11 engineering for [ __ ]
1:18:13 sake like if you're passionate about
1:18:18 structure and coding and you want to
1:18:20 learn prompt engineering cuz you [ __ ]
1:18:22 love that great but but it's been kind
1:18:25 of positioned like if you don't learn
1:18:27 prompt engineering you can't do
1:18:30 AI that's not true and that's getting
1:18:33 less and less true as these tools get
1:18:36 smarter and smarter you're not going to

1:18:39 engineering you can choose to use it can
1:18:42 make you more powerful you can build
1:18:44 really wicked cool applications if
1:18:46 you're good at

1:21:03 learn those subtleties is to just play
1:21:05 like you can't there's no manual and
1:21:08 there's no and there's no this Tool's
1:21:10 better than that tool it's like
1:21:11 depending on your use case they all
1:21:14 might be good but you know you got to
1:21:16 learn that

1:22:15 is that people that were coming into the
1:22:18 there was something about the salon that
1:22:19 was different there's lots of AI groups
1:22:22 out there but most of them are about the
1:22:23 technology or or they about the coding
1:22:25 or they're about the the different
1:22:27 models or about open source whatever and
1:22:29 and there was something about the salon
1:22:31 that there was a joy to
1:22:33 it but people were getting really
1:22:36 interesting [ __ ] done and then there was
1:22:37 also this thing happening where people
1:22:39 in this
1:22:41 community like even ones that were super
1:22:45 anxious about public speaking or like to
1:22:48 be in the
1:22:49 background we're kind of stepping up and
1:22:53 sharing what they learned and leading
1:22:55 there was there there was this
1:22:57 generosity in people's willingness this
1:22:59 bravery in people's willingness
1:23:02 to help each other out support each
1:23:04 other and so these three things are an
1:23:07 articulation of that play first
1:23:10 mindfully create generously lead so
1:23:12 we've got that written out you can look
1:23:14 at that and then these are the values so
1:23:16 these are the values of
1:23:18 of how this group is naturally evolved
1:23:21 that it's a group full of people that
1:23:22 are
1:23:23 curious that are
1:23:26 playful like imagine being in a place
1:23:29 where when some new technology comes out
1:23:32 that's going to totally blow up some
1:23:34 previous technology rather than going oh
1:23:37 crap now I got to learn a new thing this
1:23:39 group's like oh cool we get something
1:23:40 new to play with there's a playfulness
1:23:43 there's a joy in the
1:23:46 Curiosity there's also a thing happens
1:23:49 in this community that I've seen very
1:23:51 rarely
1:23:53 is community are funny because you know
1:23:57 when they start out everyone's new and
1:23:59 everyone's a
1:24:01 novice and what's happened over 18
1:24:04 months that we've been doing this is
1:24:05 there's a lot of people in the AI Salon
1:24:07 that I would argue are like you know top
1:24:10 class in terms of AI strategy AI
1:24:14 implementation you know using generative
1:24:16 AI to do amazing
1:24:18 things and so when new people come into
1:24:21 the community they don't get made fun of
1:24:24 they don't get ignored
1:24:26 like the people that show up are like
1:24:30 hey welcome come on in let us let us
1:24:32 give you a
1:24:33 hand bravery this is a group that's
1:24:36 willing to just [ __ ] step up and do
1:24:38 it or willing to say all right I'm going
1:24:41 to go tell my boss he needs to do
1:24:42 something about Ai and I want him to
1:24:44 make me the AI are and they go do it and
1:24:47 then they
1:24:48 are and then there's this generosity
1:24:51 thing or this is a group that you know
1:24:52 like the mods and and The Irregular that
1:24:55 show up here night after night after
1:24:56 night become like this amazingly
1:24:58 generous group that support me and
1:25:01 support each other and support new
1:25:02 people and when trolls come in and try
1:25:04 to be dicks they're like they treat them
1:25:06 with
1:25:10 empathy unless they're total dicks and
1:25:12 then out the door they
1:25:15 go but that doesn't happen very much
1:25:17 because when you enter a group that's
1:25:20 got this level of compassion and
1:25:24 generosity it and
1:25:27 Clarity there's not a lot of room for
1:25:29 people to come in and just [ __ ] with it
1:25:31 which is really really special so so

1:36:34 doomers and there's a lot of ignorance
1:36:37 and there's a lot of misunderstanding
1:36:39 about what the technology is and how it
1:36:44 works and there's a lot of
1:36:47 fear and it's all very understandable
1:36:50 right because what gets reported is that
1:36:54 oh these tools are going to be so good
1:36:57 that it's going to eat your job and
1:36:59 everyone's going to lose their
1:37:02 job
1:37:04 that makes a good news
1:37:08 story
1:37:11 and there's going to be a lot of
1:37:13 disruption in the
1:37:16 workplace um but what what that
1:37:20 narrative misses
1:37:22 is what these tools are also
1:37:25 doing which they're allowing people who
1:37:29 embrace them and use
1:37:31 them to get a leg
1:37:34 up and and upskill what they can do
1:37:40 dramatically and there are going to be
1:37:42 jobs in the future that we can't even
1:37:44 imagine
1:37:45 today because as these tools take over
1:37:48 tasks what I will argue is this AI is
1:37:52 going to absolutely
1:37:54 start to do the tasks that we
1:37:59 do the jobs will change right what is a
1:38:02 job a job is a collection of
1:38:04 tasks that someone pays you to do
1:38:07 because you have the skill to do those
1:38:10 tasks well what happens when AI does
1:38:13 those
1:38:14 tasks well then you do something else it
1:38:17 doesn't mean you don't work there it
1:38:19 doesn't mean you don't have a job or you
1:38:21 don't even have that job but what it
1:38:23 does mean is that job transforms
1:38:25 dramatically so maybe you become you
1:38:28 shift from becoming a tactical
1:38:31 copywriter to more like an editor more
1:38:34 like a curator curating the best stuff
1:38:37 out of what these machines are
1:38:42 producing
1:38:50 so it's when we hit these lulls like one
1:38:54 of the one of the things that I've
1:38:55 noticed on Twitter in the
1:38:57 past 3 months is that guys like Gary
1:39:02 Marcus who's I I don't know him
1:39:05 personally but God man he would not be
1:39:08 fun at a party it's just everything out
1:39:10 of his mouth is [ __ ] negative and see
1:39:12 I told you that chat GPT wasn't good see
1:39:15 I told you that AGI wasn't coming so
1:39:18 there's a lot of that right now there's
1:39:19 a lot of people oh it's all plateaued
1:39:21 it's it's over a i over sorry that was
1:39:23 hype cycle that was a hype cycle the
1:39:26 bubbles burst there's a lot of bubbles
1:39:28 bursting right
1:39:31 now having been through this in the90s
1:39:34 the bubble hasn't [ __ ] started
1:39:38 yet like the boil hasn't started in this
1:39:43 soup like the water's heating up some
1:39:46 vegetables are floating to the
1:39:48 surface the the hype hasn't begun

1:44:25 AGI that Ilia suver saw something and

1:44:42 thing this reasoning engine qar is a
1:44:44 reasoning engine that sits on top of the
1:44:47 large language model so you've got your
1:44:48 large language model you got chat GPT
1:44:51 sitting on top of that and now you've
1:44:53 got this reasoning engine that'll sit in
1:44:54 between those two where the large
1:44:58 language model is going to produce some
1:45:00 content and the reasoning engine is
1:45:01 going to basically say hey is it any
1:45:03 good or not did we get it right and
1:45:05 it'll iterate on it before it presents
1:45:07 it to you is the the sort
1:45:10 of base level understanding there's
1:45:13 probably way more to it to that than I
1:45:16 know but that's basically what it is the
1:45:18 code name is strawberry which is a troll
1:45:21 um to Elon Musk which is kind of fun
1:45:24 um but you should follow this account
1:45:28 because um it it looks like this this
1:45:31 could be actually a historical thing if
