16. 4:45[Music] I talk about this occasionally. I talk about feeling like we're entering a new era. And I feel like we're
17. 4:54entering a new era, but normally that's been in the context of AI. Yeah. Have you heard about this thing called
18. 5:03AI? It's going to be big. It's going to be really big. Going to be really big. You won't like it. I like them ters. Um,
19. 5:13normally when I say we're in a new era, it's like there's a new phase of the technology. It's not that. It's not that at all. In fact,
20. 5:25everyone that I'm talking to, because I don't I don't I don't know if this is obvious to you, but I don't hang
21. 5:32out with quantum physicists that much. I mean, sure, the occasional, you know, Neil deGrasse Tyson sighting,
22. 5:48but but Most of the people that I work with, talk to about AI, who are using AI are not noticing dramatic
23. 6:05improvements in the models. Now, you could argue that Nano Banana is a step change. You could argue that
24. 6:15some of the agentic stuff like Gen Spark are kind of stepchangy. OpenAI agent maybe no one's using it that I know but just day-to-day chat
25. 6:27GPTing just basic AI use chat GPT5 is just kind of a different personality than GPT4 it's not super better it's not
26. 6:38super worse claude is in the same neighborhood Grock is in the same neighborhood Gemini and Yeah. So, so they're all they're all
27. 6:51in the same neighborhood just for basic stuff. And this channel and the AI salon were started very very early in AI
28. 7:06and the only if you wanted to be a player like a player. If you wanted to be a player, um, all you had to do is be curious,
29. 7:24right? If you got fancy, you built a custom GPT. If you could do image prompting and large language model prompting, and god
30. 7:34forbid, some some coding prompting over here, some language prompting here, some image prompting here, you were [ __ ] killing it, right?
31. 7:43And the quality of work didn't really matter. It was just that you could do work that you could use this thing.
32. 7:50Cling on a cling. You mean cling AI or cl? I assume you mean cling. Yes. Okay. We'll go check that out. Oh, I think I saw that earlier.
33. 8:05Here's the error that I think we're entering. I think we got to start doing better work. I think we got got to start doing higher
34. 8:18quality work. More excellence. And more excellence. Not just I can make chat GPT do something cool but excellence like a
35. 8:32chain of intent, a chain of direction, a chain of activities that are leading to some grand vision that maybe you have to use some
36. 8:41different tools to get there. And I think it's so important that I'm actually I'm actually developing a new
37. 8:54developing I'm articulating a new value for the salon for the AI salon and that new value is create excellence and I think I'm going to
38. 9:10because you can't have even numbered things right now we have five values And so you can't have six values. You have
39. 9:16to have five or seven. It's just a rule. Vicki knows. Vicki knows. There's just certain rules you have in life. And
40. 9:23oddnumbered lists are one of them. It's just the way it is. You have three, five or seven, and that's it. Nine's too
41. 9:29many. No one No one can really deal with seven. So five's kind of nice. So we got to we got to retire one. [Music] Vicki. Yep.
42. 9:44I love you, Vicki. That's awesome. Oh man. So, it's going to be five. So, so if I think about create excellence like there there were
43. 10:00let me let me unpack how I got to it. The first thing was I realized that in the AI salon values, we didn't have a
44. 10:07single value that was about the work. It was all about connecting with people. So there was curiosity and empathy and
45. 10:15playfulness and uh what was the fourth one? Wait, hang on.
46. 10:30Um fourth one was bravery and the fifth one was generosity. And if I think about work, you know, you could put like
47. 10:44you could put excellence, you could put creative. Um, at one point I thought creative excellence. The problem with creative
48. 10:54excellence is it just makes it about creative output like pictures and movies and music. And then I kind of landed on create
49. 11:04excellence. The problem with with just excellence on its own is it just sounds like one of those successories posters.
50. 11:11Excellence. We stand for excellence. Everything we do here is going to be excellent. And what I landed on was create excellence.
51. 11:25[Music] When you're dealing with AI, when you're dealing with an AI that's capable of doing good work,
52. 11:36you don't have to put much effort in to do good work. But to do excellent work is like a it's it's like a personal
53. 11:48it's a personal measure, right? Is this work excellent? And if you're just sort of lazy prompting and squirting s stuff out,
54. 12:00it's not going to be excellent because everyone can do that. And so I think as as as a community in the salon, but I think as a community of
55. 12:08AI professionals, I think this new era is about us claiming our role as people who can create excellence. And
56. 12:22how you create excellence is you stand firm in an idea and you stand committed in that idea. So, so it means you have to have an idea
57. 12:33first. So create excellence is I'm not just going to sit down at the keyboard and vomit out crap. Right?
58. 12:43Create excellence means we're going to we're going to start at square zero. And square zero is Huh. What do I want to make?
59. 12:54Do I want to make an app? Do I want to make a an art project? Do I want to take my photography and find some way to reimagine it? Do I want
60. 13:08to start a business? Who am I doing it for? Am I doing it for myself? Am I doing it for my community?
61. 13:17Am I doing it for someone at work? Am I doing it for someone I have a crush on? And like take the time to have that idea to have that
62. 13:31have enough understanding of your intent to understand what good would look like because you can probably get to good
63. 13:41pretty quickly, but at least you're in a direction. And then if you're going to create excellence, what do you need to do to
64. 13:48take it to that next level? What do you need to do to to elevate it? [Laughter] Are you are you a licensed instigator?
65. 13:59What what are your qualifications? I I have instigated many an AI practitioner and tonight I am instigating even further.
66. 14:10What I'm saying is just doing it ain't good enough anymore. It's so funny. In the past three weeks, I've had
67. 14:22I don't know, Brandon, four or five different people who have not been to the lives in a while have come back in and commented like,
68. 14:32"Oh, you're still doing this?" And I I like like how I take that is
69. 14:50we're we're in a different phase. We're in a different phase. And I think I think we need to I think one of the things I want to
70. 15:00explore in here is how do I elevate the conversation so that we're not just talking about here's how you vomit out
71. 15:08some stuff. Like even the video that we did last night that I was really happy with. The tsunami is coming back in. So are
72. 15:21the views. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think that's right. Um last night was great. Here, let's look at this video.

74. 16:02A shimmer shift then many more. Like thoughts of born and never called. They turn as one but not for you. They

80. 17:43>> So he did that over the past two nights. Now, is that excellent? I don't know. You may or may not think that that's excellent. But
81. 17:54here's a here's a a phrase in the definition of this value that I'm working with. So, we're getting rid of the the the value of bravery.
82. 18:09I think doing excellent work, I think creating excellence actually takes courage. Because you actually have to have a
83. 18:17point of view. And if you have a point of view, that means that by definition, some people are not going to agree with that point of view.
84. 18:26They're not going to agree with it creatively. They're not going to agree with it politically. They're not going
85. 18:30to agree with it psychologically. It's just not going to move them. It's just going to be not their cup of tea.
86. 18:38So, there's something risky there. So, one of the phrases that I'm working with in the definition of create excellence
87. 18:46is be brave enough to make something that you're excited to share. And so, that little movie that we just watched,
88. 19:01whether it's good or not, it excites me. Like I love the story of how we got to it. I loved that we were going to go
89. 19:13play with midjourney styles. We were starting in this very external technical kind of way. We were going to go look at
90. 19:19lists of style references and then I just shouted out into the ether someone come up with a prompt and
91. 19:26a couple of prompts came in and source camp said um just keep swimming which is [ __ ] weird. So we just keep swimming and then we
92. 19:40just went and clicked on a bunch of style references and and the prompt just keep swimming. Click click click click
93. 19:45click click click click click. Right. What is that? That's AI slop. Click, click, click, click, click, click,
94. 19:51click. But it's not AI slop, is it? Because we've got a specific prompt. That's weird. And we're going to compare that same
95. 20:02prompt across these different styles. What are we looking for? I don't know. What we could have found is nothing.
96. 20:12All right, we made some pictures. Did we create something that I was excited to share? Not yet.
97. 20:26Yeah. Normalize calling AI slop rough drafts. Well, here's the thing. I think if you generate if you generate AI slop,
98. 20:35just sort of thoughtless AI, and then you share that with the world as if you thought about it, that's AI slop.
99. 20:43But if you quickly make a bunch of stuff in AI and you're using it to inspire yourself or to entertain yourself or
100. 20:49whatever and you're not going to share it, you're not exciting excited about sharing it. That's just called practice, right?
101. 20:59How many how many balls does NovakJokovic hit that no one sees? you know, Jordan, 10,000, you know, 10,000 foul shots. Was it a weekend, a
102. 21:14day? I don't know. I don't think it's possible a day. But most of the shots that Jordan took, no one saw.

105. 21:39working through the images early on, Kyle? Yeah. So, so this was a thing. Corey Sandler early on when she first
106. 21:46started when she first discovered I don't know if it was midjourney or stable diffusion, whatever it was,
107. 21:53doesn't matter. It was one of the image generation tools. And I would I would get on here and I would, you know, I'd get if I did three
108. 22:04or four prompts in a direction, I'd be proud of myself. And then I saw this work that Corey Sandler was doing and she was doing
109. 22:14dozens of iterations. She would get something and she would iterate on it and then she would iterate on it and she
110. 22:19would iterate on it and she was doing like glasses and she was doing these custo oh it was custom GPTs. It was it
111. 22:26was when uh it was when Dolly Dolly 3 came out, the image generation part of Chat GPT. And she was just digging
112. 22:33deeper and deeper and deeper and deeper and she would run down these rabbit holes. And like what what amazed me about it was
113. 22:44about three or four layers in, I could see where she was headed and I could recognize that that's where I would stop.
114. 22:55And not only did she keep going, she kept going like deeper and deeper and deeper and deeper and deeper.
115. 23:02And I remember asking her about it and she goes, "Well, it's just that's not it." And she would go deeper. And she's like,
116. 23:08"That's not it." But it it was in a direction. She wasn't going back up and going across. She was going down. She
117. 23:14was running down this rabbit hole. And she would get somewhere down toward the bottom. at some point down there, she
118. 23:20would generate something that she's like, "Yeah, that's one. That's one that I'm excited to share. That's one that
119. 23:27that's one that I'm willing to put out there." Like, that's it, Corey. That's it.
120. 23:45And I think that I think that that's that it that it was good enough in the early days to just dick around and just be decently competent.
121. 24:01And I there's just too many too many people are using tools that are too good on their own to just be curious anymore. So I think
122. 24:12curiosity is how you how you learn, right? Learn how you learn. I saw a really good Tik Tok today that was about that. Learn how you learn
123. 24:26and then keep learning. So, I think you got to keep doing that. But I think we're getting into the place like what
124. 24:32does it mean to be a professional in generative AI? What does it mean to be an AI artist? What does it mean to be an AI creative
125. 24:41director? What does it mean to be an AI producer? Yeah, just keep learning. I'm blending modern and renaissance in ' 80s colors. Oh, wait.
126. 24:53I use AI to challenge myself regarding modern art. So, I'm blending modern and renaissance with 80s colors. That That's
127. 25:02it. That's perfect, right? And so, and like and what that what that starts to look like, Mimi, is you're in an exploration right now,
128. 25:13right? And so, so you're exploring these worlds and you're using AI to mash these things together and at some point some image
129. 25:22is going to speak to you. I've I've I've shared this image before many times, but let me go show show it again because

135. 26:26about 3,000 people. Now, not all of them are active, but it's a community of AI optimists. And it's a community of people that are
136. 26:35trying to figure this [ __ ] out. And and to a person, what I can promise you is that as as as big of a head start
137. 26:43as they have on you, if you're like, "Oh, that's going to be intimidating. They know so much more than I do,"
138. 26:50they know some more than you do. And there is so much that they don't know and that I don't know and that we don't
139. 26:56collectively know that no one effectively knows anything. So jump in, get engaged with community, start hanging out with people that are
140. 27:07thinking about this stuff. So let me tell you the story of this image. Um just happened. Oh, so if I if I if I'm just scrolling here,
141. 27:20like all these images, this is when I got into stable diffusion and a thing called Dream Booth where I
142. 27:27could upload pictures of myself and it made all these crazy self-portraits. And I started this project called Kyle Shannon Dreams
143. 27:36where I'd share all these. And then one day I I forget what my process was. My process was like I think I would find
144. 27:45someone else's prompt and then I would come in and I would twist it. I would just put some spin on it and then I
145. 27:52would just do that until I found like a series that looked interesting and then I would make five or six images and then I'd move on.
146. 28:01And so in doing that one day, well, let's see that image came up. I was like, "That's interesting." And these these would take like two
147. 28:16minutes each. And then that came up, I was like, "Oh, that's interesting." And then that came up, I was like, "Oh, that's really
148. 28:26interesting." And then that came up. And when this image came up, it literally took my breath away. It
149. 28:34literally I went I I literally gasped. I was by myself. I think it was late at night. I was just making images. This
150. 28:42image came up and I was like and I got really emotional. I had like, you know, chills run down my body and I just sat with this image for a
151. 28:56long time. I actually I want to go upscale this because I think it's just such a beautiful image. Be nice to upscale.
152. 29:03And I sat there for a long time looking at it and I was kind of hit with a a sadness and a euphoria at the same time.
153. 29:21And what that was about was the euphoria was if I had the skills and the vision and the talent and enough time and enough training,
154. 29:36this is the kind of art I would create. Like this this was the first time in all those images that I made, this was the
155. 29:46first image that I was like, "Oh my god, that's me." like that's that's me. And the sadness was realizing
156. 29:57that that wasn't a path I took in my life to have those skills. But here I was in a moment with this
157. 30:04remarkable technology where I still made an image that that came even though it was sort of externally derived when it
158. 30:13showed up it was like that's me. That's that's that's my aesthetic. That's my thing. We are all artists. Make it a movie. See what happens.
159. 30:27Maybe. And so, and so I think this is the I don't have enough of those moments.
160. 30:45And I think with AI, it's really easy not to have any of those moments. You can just you can just get into this sort of steady, stunning.
161. 30:58It's like it's like flipping through Tik Tok, right? Endorphin hit. Endorphin hit. Endorphin hit. Oh, that's pretty. That's nice.
162. 31:10But I think creating excellence requires you to take a moment and say, "What do I want? What does good look like?"
163. 31:19You found you. Yeah. Exactly. Exactly. Art is a verb, right? Live it. Yeah. Exactly. And it's scary. Create excellence. Be
164. 31:30brave enough to create something you're excited to share. Because in order to get to something you're excited to
165. 31:36share, you have to make a bunch of [ __ ] that will test the edges of your self-esteem. Right. Corey Sandler banging out those images.
166. 31:53Next, next. Next, next. Next. Down. Down. Down. Down. Down. That's not it. That's not it. That's not it.
167. 32:02at any point in that journey, she could go, "I don't have talent. I'm not good enough." And maybe maybe she has those feelings,
168. 32:11but she keeps going, right? I don't think she does. She's she's she seems like a relatively stable cool chick. I think she's got some of
169. 32:21this [ __ ] figured out, but she keeps going. And what makes her keeps going is she's got a vision. She's got an intent. She
170. 32:31knows what she wants it to be. And until it's that, she's not going to stop. That's where I think we all need to get. So,
171. 32:43so there I wanted to share that. Feeling crafty. I created a story book today and about fell out of my chair.
172. 32:52Well, that's I Well, and that's, you know, that's that's kind of the stunning thing about about AI is I don't know your background. Um, Phil
173. 33:03Phil and Crafty, I don't know your background, but maybe you're a great illustrator, maybe you're not. Maybe you're a great kids
174. 33:10book writer, maybe you're not. But with AI today, you made a kids book. Do you know how many people over the
175. 33:19years that I've talked to and they find out I'm a writer or I'm a creative or whatever, they say, "Oh, you know, I've
176. 33:25had this idea for a kids book for 20 years." A lot a lot of people a lot of people. And what stops them? Well, they didn't
177. 33:38go to art school. They can't draw. They're not so good with the words. They're really good at technical writing, but they're horrible at
178. 33:47simpling things down, dumbing things down. They're bad at imagery. Well, now you're now you now you now you no longer have that limitation.
179. 34:00That's what AI does. What AI does is it is it taps you into the possibility that all the [ __ ] that you said you you
180. 34:07didn't think you could do, you can now do to at least some degree and and very often to a very high degree.
181. 34:16And then what's going to separate the good from the bad? And what's going to separate the work that stands above from
182. 34:22the work that just becomes noise is excellence. Is a human being with access to the exact same tools that
183. 34:34everyone else has creating excellence that is above the mean. How do you do that? That's [ __ ] art. That's That's the
184. 34:50creative process. I make t-shirts, but I'm over 40 and I understand that AI is here. Here you go. This is it. And it's not going anywhere.
185. 35:01Phil and Crafty. Hala fuckinglelujah. That's the whole message of this channel. The whole message of this
186. 35:12channel is there's this profound thing amongst us. There's this profound suite of capabilities that are going to literally decimate
187. 35:26some jobs and make entirely new new jobs possible. And nobody, not a single person has any idea where this is going.
188. 35:40And if it's not going anywhere, if if all it's doing is accelerating, then we have two choices in this world, Phil.
189. 35:47And you [ __ ] hit it. Well, you chose you chose the path that I that that this channel is about. You either deal with it or you don't.
190. 35:58And if you deal with it, you learn that you can take your t-shirt making skills and you can go into this thing, you can
191. 36:06go, huh, if I take that vision I have for what goes on a t-shirt and I twist it slightly, that could be a kids story
192. 36:15and then I could take these images and then I could make those and I could probably write a kids book and an hour
193. 36:21[ __ ] later, two hours later, you have a kids book. Holy [ __ ] And there's just a whole other pile of people that are like, "Nope,
194. 36:36not going to do it. It's the world's greatest plagiarism machine. It's just a stochastic parrot. Hey, I can't do anything creative.
195. 36:44Hey, I can't do anything creative." Look at that image. It took me [ __ ] 3,000 images to get to that image.
196. 36:56Oh, no. Literally two minutes. I was floored. Yeah, there you go. Exactly. Exactly. Corey Sandler, I'm a 63y old
197. 37:04potter. As analog as it gets and AI is absolutely now, a friend just contacted me today to talk about writing a book. Coincidence? I
198. 37:13think not. Right. Create excellence. Silver Fox, if you say to AI, write me a book, is it going to write you a good book? No.
199. 37:25It's going to write you a pile of [ __ ] But if you say, "Hey, I've got this idea for this book and it's got birds in it and it's got
200. 37:38Dan Brown's got this new book, The Da Vinci Code. Dan Brown, he's got this new book that's about um like uh
201. 37:48treasure hunting inside consciousness. I'm absolutely fascinated to read it. I hate reading, but I love the Da Vinci
202. 37:57Code and it's some it's some crazy amount of pages. It's it's big. It's but it's about treasure hunting inside consciousness.
203. 38:07Can you write an excellent book using AI? Yes, you can. But not by just thoughtlessly hitting, give me a book.
204. 38:20Like even the book you made in two minutes, Phil, it's probably good, but you probably look through it and well
205. 38:25that's kind of weird. That's kind of weird. Okay, that's your point of view. Lean into that. Tighten that up a bit.
206. 38:31Go look at it. And you can go from a good book to an excellent book in four minutes. So anyway, so I think this is where I'm going to
207. 38:46start pushing us. This where I'm going to start pushing this channel is not just can you use the tool, but can you use the tool
208. 38:58and be brave enough with it to generate something that you'd be excited to share? And like, have you done that today?
209. 39:15Have you made something today that you're excited to share? Not that you're willing to share. That's good.
210. 39:26Willing to share is good. Excited to share. That video I made last night that we played and I took all the time to post
211. 39:35and I yelled at Elon Musk about for not having an upload service. I got done with this. You know what I The first
212. 39:42thing I did? I went into my wife. Want to see what I made? Like like like a [ __ ] seven-year-old. I made a
213. 39:49picture. Were you hanging on the fridge? Remember being excited to share [ __ ] when you were seven? Then daddy's like, "Well, you're not
214. 40:00very talented, are you?" [ __ ] I guess I'm not an artist. [ __ ] 54 years later, you're like, "No, I'm not an artist. Daddy told me
215. 40:09so. Then you find AI and you're like, hey, maybe I am an artist. That takes courage. It takes courage to
216. 40:21say, I'm going to make something I'm proud of. I'm going to make something I'm excited to share. I'm going to be
217. 40:27willing to run down that rabbit hole and produce piece after piece after piece after piece. That's not quite right. Not
218. 40:34quite right. Not quite right. That's not it. That's not it. That's not it. That's not it. I'm going to have the guts to keep going
219. 40:43until I see something like this image that [ __ ] takes your breath away. When this image came up, I went and I
220. 40:54changed all of my profile pictures on every every one of my social media things to this. I posted it everywhere. I wrote up a
221. 41:04little story about it. this is what I would make if I had the skills to do it. People didn't get it. They were like,
222. 41:16"Well, maybe you should just go take a Photoshop lesson there, Kyle." Hey, Kyle, you know what I was thinking? You
223. 41:23were saying earlier you were a talentless oaf, and I don't think you're a talentless oaf. I just think you
224. 41:29haven't taken the right lessons. Maybe if you go take some Photoshop lessons, you could learn some layering and some
225. 41:35compositing and then you could do this. Oh, good lord. To see with one eye is to face the truth without flinching. The whole sky
226. 41:50reflected in a single gaze. This is the eye that watches us back. Asking whether we are able to awake the
227. 41:59future. we are making. Yeah. It is the mirror of the soul and the machine reminding us that creation and
228. 42:07responsibility are the same act. Create excellence. Create it. It's a choice to move beyond good. It's a choice to move beyond good.
