8:19 model is that it's not your everyday
8:23 driver right this is like the you know
8:27 you got the one of 50
8:30 Porsche track car that looks like a
8:32 regular 911 but it's
8:42 not and and most of the driving that you
8:45 would do with it you couldn't even get
8:47 the most out of it so if you try to use
8:49 01 just like you use traditional GPT
8:52 it's not going to get it's it's it's
8:54 going to be weird is is my sense

9:02 into the little bit that I understand
9:05 which is
9:08 like I understand very little but we're
9:11 doing it so here's what I'm doing I'm
9:14 now three days
9:16 into finishing an incomplete screenplay
9:19 that I started that I just dumped
9:23 into 01 preview and said finish the
9:27 outline which it did brilliantly and
9:30 then I said write one of the random
9:32 scenes you created and it did
9:37 brilliantly and so now I'm trying to
9:39 figure some things out
9:42 like does it lose context of long
9:46 conversations is it going to keep
9:48 writing good if I keep pushing it and
9:50 keep pushing forward is it going to is
9:52 it just going to totally explode and the
9:54 risk is going to be this so we've got 81
9:58 people in here fair amount of you have
10:00 never been here before
10:03 um and so tonight could be weird could
10:07 be
10:08 boring normally this is more of just
10:10 like a performative me like yapping
10:12 about AI
10:14 woohoo and what I can what I can promise
10:17 you is that when when I try to actually
10:20 do something like complete something
10:22 like real work um it tends to take a
10:25 long time and be
10:26 boring so so that's the warning for
10:29 tonight
10:30 I've been testing 01 by rewriting the
10:32 first few novel
10:34 chapters it's so much
10:37 better that I'm thinking of
10:40 rewriting the whole book see this is
10:43 where I am and what's [ __ ] up is a lot
10:46 of the
10:48 the whoever opinion nightes out there I
10:52 don't know if they're all influencers
10:53 but there's lots of people with lots of
10:56 opinions I'm seeing like these bizarre
10:58 5050 splits where some people are like
11:01 well it's much worse at writing um than
11:04 than
11:05 gp4 and then other people are like oh
11:08 it's much better at writing than gp4 I'm
11:10 one of
11:11 them um I have
11:15 never since I've been playing with these
11:17 large language models since gpt3 I have
11:20 never had a large language model write
11:23 screenplay
11:25 dialogue that
11:26 wasn't [ __ ] horrible
11:30 ever not once write like my style write
11:33 a whole scene okay and it writes half a
11:35 page and it
11:37 sucks and and GPT did it now and then
11:40 there's other people that are going oh
11:41 it's worse at programming and other
11:43 people are going it's better at
11:44 programming and other people going it
11:46 sucks at math and other people going
11:47 it's better at math and David Shapiro
11:49 said it sucks and it's not great and
11:51 then he came out today and said no I was
11:53 wrong it is pretty

12:00 we are going to have to collectively
12:01 figure out how to prompt this

12:09 need to like it's almost like the more

12:15 janky cuz it's it's doing its own

12:19 is what are the good use cases for it I

12:25 creative
12:27 writing is a superpower so that's what

14:26 synced so this this document I was going
14:29 to used to walk us through writing this
14:31 thing and organizing this
14:34 thing isn't

14:47 anymore I used to use this software
14:49 called
14:51 Celtics which now looks like it's a
14:53 subscription web-based screenwriting

19:12 prompting which basically means prompt a

19:24 um it appears that they're doing some
19:27 fancier [ __ ] on the back end or maybe
19:29 maybe they've just trained it on
19:30 different data I don't I don't know I
19:32 don't know how it's doing what it's
19:33 doing but it's relatively
19:35 straightforward to follow if you know
19:38 what to look
19:40 for and then I think the real art of
19:43 using it is there's a couple of things
19:44 you have to know you're limited to 50
19:47 prompts per week with this new model cuz
19:52 it's expensive because when you write a
19:54 single prompt it's writing a whole bunch
19:56 of other prompts on the back end by the
19:58 way
19:59 I'm feeling particularly irregular

20:08 noise like like like most of you
20:13 should um the first the next I don't
20:16 know 15 minutes or so I'm just going to
20:17 walk people through what I've done so
20:19 far and explain a little bit

20:29 other thing that 01 did the other night

20:36 I've been working on a screenplay and

20:40 the way just write me the first chapter
20:42 of this book if it were a novel and the

20:46 paragraph of the book

20:54 really really good
20:57 writing like I wouldn't edit it like it
21:00 was good enough
21:01 writing that someone last night said
21:04 well what if it's plagiarized and I'm
21:06 like that's not how this [ __ ] works it's
21:07 not plagiarizing and then I thought
21:09 wonder if it is plagiarized so I copied
21:12 this one particular phrase that was just
21:14 incredibly well written and I put it in
21:17 Google and it didn't find any matches so
21:19 it's it's not plagiarizing and it wrote
21:22 this really remarkable opening paragraph
21:24 for this novel that doesn't exist but
21:27 might
21:30 so it's
21:32 crazy all

21:53 GPT there are three major models now
21:57 that you can use GPT 40 or Omni 01
22:02 preview this is the new one and 01 mini
22:05 which is also a new one but it's smaller

22:08 faster uh I'm not going to bother with
22:10 mini cuz I don't I'm not pro we're not
22:12 programming right now like if you were
22:15 programming this is like I don't know
22:16 six times cheaper than this one or 10
22:18 times cheaper something like

22:25 um if you want to do just short little
22:28 if you just want short short answers to
22:30 things nose hair check if you just want
22:33 short answers to things use
22:36 gp40 if you're working on a big
22:39 complicated project like what I'm
22:42 working on

22:48 preview I don't know like I don't have a
22:51 great sense right now of What kinds of
22:54 projects make sense for this thing and I
22:57 think

23:07 bizarre feature release strategy for
23:10 lack of a better word I don't think it's
23:12 a
23:13 strategy um Sam Alman has talked about
23:16 on a number of
23:18 occasions essentially slow dripping
23:23 out features to the public so that we
23:27 get used to what these things can
23:30 do because if he just dropped it all at
23:32 once we'd be overwhelmed and and
23:36 historically I thought well maybe that's
23:38 the case but maybe that's just a line of
23:39 [ __ ] cuz they're not you know
23:41 releasing
23:44 enough I am so unclear like I've been
23:47 thinking about this [ __ ] a lot for the
23:49 past two years and I am really
23:52 unclear when and how and why it makes
23:56 sense to use 01 versus is GPT
24:01 40 and so I think us having this preview
24:05 version for a month actually makes sense
24:09 because we got to we've got to
24:10 collectively figure out what we're doing
24:12 with it or maybe it's just trying to
24:15 save a ton of money that's
24:17 possible all of them have rate limits of
24:19 varying amounts and transparency
24:22 absolutely business makes sense to
24:25 me if I had a sub for chat GPT wait Kyle

24:31 lose lose you in the process how can

24:38 along that's a good idea

25:29 that you basically Define the kinds of
25:31 things you want it to find in a file and
25:33 then it replaces them with variables and
25:36 then you send that off to the large
25:37 language model there's a company out of
25:39 Denver called Lial that that's what they
25:42 do but their minimum annual subscription
25:45 is like 25 Grand so you got to be it's
25:47 it's basically designed for Fortune 500
25:52 companies um but it is it is possible
25:55 it's just not easy right now
25:59 I got chat GPT 40 for free and mini okay

26:05 perfect okay so here's here's what I
26:07 want you to
26:09 do if you're a digital hoarder like me
26:12 or if you're just a normal person you've
26:14 probably got some incomplete projects so
26:18 let me walk you through what I did so
26:20 I'll just tell it to you first and then
26:21 we'll walk through it I had an
26:23 incomplete screenplay like I had written
26:25 like I don't know three or four
26:27 scenes and I had an incomplete outline
26:30 of the same screenplay and I'd written
26:32 like I don't know a third of it or maybe
26:34 a little more than that but not
26:37 much and
26:39 I pasted both of those I said I'm going
26:42 to give you some fragments of a
26:44 screenplay and then the first thing I
26:46 did was say finish the outline and then
26:48 the second thing I did was say write a
26:50 scene and then I had it tell me
26:53 characters and [ __ ] like that characters
26:55 it added and it did it really really
26:57 well so if you want to play along what I
26:59 would say is go find some abandoned
27:02 project or or a current incomplete
27:04 project and just play just play along so
27:08 you're going to go to the 01
27:10 preview and then I'll show you my my
27:14 prompt of what I
27:15 did and you can do something similar
27:18 again this this ain't science this this
27:20 ain't prompt engineering this is prompt
27:23 playing prompt
27:25 experimenting we'll get to the
27:26 engineering when these things start
27:30 behaving in a more predictable fashion
27:33 or if you're a programmer you can deal
27:35 with that but as human beings we don't
27:37 have to so I said here are two fragments
27:38 from a screenplay the first fragment is
27:40 an incomplete
27:41 outline uh though it has the main beats
27:44 of Acts 1 2 and 3 and the second
27:46 fragment is the opening scenes from the
27:48 film and then I accidentally hit submit
27:51 and I had to start
27:56 over so there's that
27:59 and
28:01 then the prompt that I wrote at the
28:05 bottom of this and if if uh if you don't
28:07 know how to do line breaks within a
28:09 prompt you hold down the shift key and
28:11 the return key so normally if you hit
28:12 the return key that submits your prompt
28:15 if you want to put extra lines in just
28:16 hold down the shift key and then the
28:18 return key will create create line bre
28:20 braks in your
28:22 prompt okay so there's the screen
28:26 play fragments
28:29 so two incomplete pieces of stuff and
28:32 then the prompt that I wrote was this
28:34 based on these inputs I'd like you to
28:36 analyze it and fill in the outline for
28:39 me and make a good compelling screenplay
28:41 with lots of twists and turns and
28:42 surprises and also introduce new
28:45 characters that are memorable and move
28:46 the plot forward
28:48 organically so if you're putting in a
28:50 work document or if you're putting in I
28:54 don't know something for the family or
28:56 for the community center just you know
28:58 make a make a similar thing basically
29:00 like finish what I've given you and then
29:03 the way 01 works is it thinks it says
29:06 it's thinking um paint hates that
29:10 term but it's it's prompting
29:16 itself and what's cool about the way
29:19 they programmed this is the only thing
29:21 you see is it thought for 59 seconds
29:23 before it answered but this little drop
29:26 down menu here means you can open this
29:27 and you can actually see what it was
29:29 thinking and so if you give your thing
29:33 here's two incomplete fragments and you
29:35 say go finish it it will read through
29:37 them and think and start prompting
29:39 itself so it said crafting a compelling
29:41 narrative crafting a thrilling
29:43 screenplay unraveling the mystery
29:45 understanding the consequences it's
29:47 really interesting it starts out
29:49 crafting a compelling narrative I'm
29:51 analyzing the screenplay fragments so
29:53 here it's talking about the structure of
29:56 the work
29:58 and then crafting a thrilling screenplay
30:00 I'm digging into Jack's
30:03 character so now it's saying I'm reading
30:05 the screenplay a loner obsessed with
30:08 photography and now it switches over to
30:12 like plot points unraveling the mystery
30:15 the main character Jack Jr grapples with
30:17 the three cameras so so now it's kind of
30:20 writing scene
30:23 outlines understanding the consequences
30:25 facing a pivotal Choice Jack Jr must
30:27 decide
30:29 between watching his family's
30:31 destruction or abandoning the his
30:35 perception to survive in act three so
30:39 it's going back and forth between plot
30:41 and structure which is interesting and
30:44 then it just goes on for a while
30:45 wrapping up act one so this is it
30:48 thinking about the story I gave
30:51 it and what it wants to do to complete
30:54 the
30:56 outline so it goes on for a bit
30:59 so as you're playing with this thing get
31:02 curious go in there and turn down those
31:04 little carrots and look at what it
31:07 writes and then what it says based on
31:09 your inputs I've analyzed the screenplay
31:11 and filled in the
31:15 outline script was generated from
31:17 Contour by Mar Mariner software it
31:19 wasn't generated by it I just Contour is
31:22 a story framework by Mariner software so
31:25 it had some of that metadata in in what
31:27 I gave it so it pulled that out and then
31:30 it says the four questions so these are
31:32 from Mariner
31:35 software and then here's the four
31:37 archetypes and it filled all these in
31:39 these weren't filled in in my in my
31:42 outline and then it wrote a log line
31:44 which is basically the synopsis of the
31:46 film when a guilt-ridden photography
31:47 obsessed 12-year-old boy inherits a
31:49 mysterious photo album that predicts
31:52 magic tragic events involving his family
31:55 in New Town he must decipher the album
31:57 secrets and confront a Sinister antiques
32:00 dealer to prevent disaster ultimately
32:03 risking everything to change fate and
32:06 save those he loves cool all right that
32:08 sounds like a
32:09 movie and then there's a little
32:11 checklist that's part of Mariner
32:13 software that it answers and then it
32:15 gives me the outline and it and it
32:18 breaks it into the the structure of this
32:21 Mariner software Act One the orphan our
32:24 main characters an
32:27 orphan and then then act two he becomes
32:30 the
32:32 wonderer and it writes all those scenes
32:34 and then act three he becomes the
32:37 warrior writes all those
32:39 scenes act three he becomes the Martyr
32:43 or the other one was act two scene part
32:46 two and then act three the Martyr and
32:49 here's the end of the
32:52 film and then it says here's the new
32:54 characters that we
32:56 introduced and then it says here's
32:58 twists and turns that we added to your
33:03 screenplay maybe that's the solution to
33:05 my inference problems take forever to
33:08 just say I was busy thinking yeah that's
33:10 that's it paint that's all you have to
33:12 do you could just have it you could just
33:14 have your system randomly write um you
33:18 know sentences like it's thinking and
33:21 just have it write random sentences and
33:23 then yeah I think that's it and just
33:25 tell them it's way faster than you think
33:27 it is
33:29 because it's

33:33 thinking um and then I
33:38 said based on the writing style of the
33:41 screenplay fragments from the opening of
33:43 the film write the following scene from
33:46 the outline you created Silas reveals
33:49 that he's the guardian of the album curs
33:51 to find successors and then it wrote a
33:54 scene that is good enough in my opinion
34:00 to go straight into a
34:02 screenplay I've written seven of these
34:05 [ __ ] um writing dialogue and
34:07 writing scenes is hard and I've never
34:09 had a large language Model come close so
34:11 the fact that this not only wrote it but
34:13 it wrote it good I mean it's I'll read a
34:16 little of it to you just so you get a
34:18 sense
34:19 of uh Hilltop clearing night the lunar
34:22 eclipse casts an eerie glow over the
34:24 hilltop Jack junr Mia and Ethan stand at
34:27 the corner of a makeshift ritual Circle
34:29 surrounded by candles and ancient
34:31 symbols drawn in chalk Becky watches
