10:07 disruption it's easy when you see that
10:09 Beetles song it's easy to see
10:15 that that the world before is going to
10:19 cease to
10:20 exist right and if the world before is
10:23 how you make your money
10:26 today then you look at that and you go
10:29 well
10:30 things are not looking bright right
10:32 everything's going to die is is the
10:34 emotional feeling and the reality is is
10:37 just that everything's going to change
10:40 it's going to die for some people it's
10:41 going to Blossom for others it's going
10:43 to be completely reinvented for
10:45 others but as these tools get more and
10:49 more powerful I think we're going to see
10:51 more and more people go absolutely not
10:53 AI is the
10:56 devil cuz hater's going to hate that's
11:00 it
11:04 Joker I think it's a legitimate concern
11:06 musicians have about their music being
11:08 used as a data set without their consent
11:11 well there's there's a for so for me I
11:14 kind of go like there's a for me there's
11:17 a Tipping Point right if you're if
11:21 you're effectively training it on all
11:24 the data then it kind of becomes like um
11:29 this is essentially the output of
11:31 humanity and it's going into this you
11:34 know modern day equivalent of a museum
11:36 or a library where we can go benefit
11:39 from the output of society now the
11:43 [ __ ] up thing about it is we're too
11:45 early to have compensation models for it
11:49 like so here's the deal here's the way I
11:50 look at
11:51 it if open AI had gone out and gotten
11:55 permission from every copyright holder
11:57 for every piece of work ever created
12:00 that was ever put on the internet chat
12:03 GPT wouldn't exist these tools wouldn't
12:06 exist same with suo same with mid
12:09 Journey same with all these now so so so
12:13 this is an industry right now that's in
12:15 a ask ask forgiveness rather than ask
12:18 permission mode because if they ask
12:21 permission the answer would be go [ __ ]
12:23 yourself right so there's there's a very
12:27 real argument to say what they're
12:29 creating is absolutely for the benefit
12:32 of society longer term um and that's
12:35 coming at the expense of the status quo
12:38 and that's scaring the [ __ ] out of
12:40 people and I totally get
12:41 that
12:48 um again I go back to I think
12:52 that I hope I hope that where this
12:55 goes is that we'll
12:58 have

13:10 maybe open AI makes one of these maybe
13:11 Adobe makes one of
13:13 these we'll have systems where artists
13:16 can create their own models easily and
13:19 charge for them right so I could make if
13:22 if I take my photography site I could
13:24 take the official Kyle Shannon
13:27 photography all my photographs create a
13:30 Kyle Shannon photography model put that
13:33 onto whatever Adobe stock or um you know
13:38 uh Getty or some [ __ ] like that and then
13:42 anytime someone uses my model to
13:44 generate an image I get you know a
13:47 hundredth of a penny or whatever it
13:48 might be that that we compensate artists
13:51 in a proactive way on the generation
13:54 rather than on the on the
13:56 use but the current model is based on
14:00 compensating them on the use not on the
14:02 generation right and so so so what Happ
14:06 what's happening is people are
14:07 generating all this content that looks
14:09 like other artist content and they're
14:11 like well if you're going to make that
14:13 content that I can't generate on the use
14:15 right so I think I think we're in a
14:17 transition we're at the very beginning
14:19 of a transition and it looks like
14:20 everything's going to be flushed down
14:22 the
14:23 toilet I got to quit falling asleep on
14:25 Tik Tok muted 17
14:28 people
14:33 there is an argument for fair use listen
14:35 I and and I'm not I'm not advocating
14:37 that all of what's happened is fair use
14:40 I think a lot of what's happened is fair
14:42 theft
14:43 but I I do not see a plausible
14:49 alternative to creating a foundational
14:52 large language model then getting as
14:54 much data as you can get your hands on
14:56 and if it was on the Internet it's in
14:57 the it's in the training set
15:00 and likely not for nothing even if it's
15:03 not on the public internet there's
15:04 probably a lot of that in the training
15:06 set too because they probably did [ __ ]
15:09 to get here here's here's what's clear
15:11 to me one of the reasons open AI has
15:15 such an
15:16 advantage they they've essentially been
15:19 King of the Hill for more than a year
15:21 now which with things is moving as fast
15:23 as they are is just weird right what
15:25 that says to me is they got their hands
15:28 on more better
15:30 data I can only assume that that wasn't
15:33 all done with you
15:35 know puppies puppies and rainbows and
15:42 smooches right so we can assume that
15:44 there was some uh they proclaimed do no
15:47 evil as they were scraping the [ __ ] out
15:50 of whatever they could because it's
15:52 almost like they get one shot to do this
15:54 right because once people get their
15:56 heads around what what you're doing with
15:58 their data they're like [ __ ] pay me
16:00 for using my [ __ ] which that's the stage
16:03 we're in right
16:05 now and that's you know that's that's
16:07 that's a bit

16:16 think that we've got

16:23 new way to compensate people
16:28 because if you take that Beetle song I

16:39 um and if you look at
16:41 it and you just go out two years
16:44 probably not even two
16:47 years you're probably just going to be
16:49 able to say I want to hear a new Beatles
16:51 song or I want to hear a new whatever

16:54 song and I want I want the topic to the
16:57 be to be this and I want the feel to be
17:00 this and I want it to start playing
17:03 right now and it'll start playing right
17:05 now so
17:08 everyone is going to have their own
17:11 think of having Spotify except it's only
17:14 songs for you it's it's this
17:17 personalized
17:18 thing but you may have those in the
17:20 style of your favorite artists
17:25 well it doesn't make sense to charge for
17:28 the song that you created created for an
17:29 audience of one right like if I create
17:33 the K Kyle Shannon version of a Beatles
17:36 song and I'm just going to listen to
17:37 that two or three times and then never
17:39 listen to it again for the rest of my
17:42 life that doesn't make sense that you
17:44 would pay an artist on that but it does
17:47 make sense that I would pay an
17:49 artist every time I want to make a song
17:51 that sounds like the Beatles that that
17:53 would go to The Beatles estate or
17:55 whoever owns the the you know writing
17:57 rights or the recording rights whatever
17:58 whatever rights their in there that
18:00 makes sense to me but the infrastructure
18:03 isn't
18:03 there so all it looks like right now to
18:06 artists is our life is [ __ ] and listen
18:09 not for nothing being an artist your
18:11 life is [ __ ]

19:29 basically that sounds to me like video
19:31 games are going to be things you
19:33 enter right think think metaverse if it

19:38 suck and then movies are going to become
19:41 video games so the way Sora
19:46 Works Sora as as impressive as it is the
19:50 the video model that open AI produced
19:53 the fact that it produces video is kind
19:55 of the least interesting thing about it
19:58 the interesting thing about it is the
20:00 way it's making that video is by
20:02 understanding and simulating the
20:04 physical
20:05 world and then it it's got a special
20:08 thing called patches where it breaks a
20:10 frame up into you know like I don't know
20:12 whatever 200 patches and then it looks
20:15 at those patches over a 100 frames and
20:18 it and that's how it maintains its
20:19 consistency but it's doing that because
20:21 it
20:23 understands the the the rules of the
20:26 physical environment it's portraying
20:30 and so what this says to me is we're
20:31 going to be able to do things like I
20:33 don't
20:36 know like hit a plot point in a movie
20:39 and do you know do branching narratives
20:41 or or watch a scene from The Getaway
20:46 driver's point of view and then watch
20:48 that same sign from the that same scene
20:50 from the cop's point of view
20:56 right interesting interesting s what are
20:59 you cooking up there boy what are you
21:02 cooking up I'll tell you what mhm oh

22:18 learning today that Kyle plays guitar no
22:20 I usually play guitar at the beginning
22:22 of every episode but I normally put it
22:24 down after like 2 minutes after the dog
22:26 gets tired of singing and but I just
22:28 decd decided to keep it on tonight Drew
22:30 said why don't you just pluck around on
22:32 your guitar while you talk to us so
22:33 that's what's going on but the
22:35 opportunity to play creatively and get
22:39 your Yaya out one of the things that
22:41 I've experienced with generative AI you
22:43 can take any idea in your head and get
22:45 it out of your head incredibly quickly
22:47 and manifest it into some form faster
22:49 than ever before and it allows you to
22:52 operate at a higher level of of creative
22:54 thinking and creative e execution than
22:57 ever before and it's absolutely
22:58 remarkable I think a lot of people don't
23:00 get how dramatic the changes are that
23:02 are going on the AI technology is
23:06 massively powerful so we want to help
23:08 you to get the fun out to get the play
23:12 going and take advantage of this
23:15 remarkable creative revolution and you
23:17 know one of the things that hopefully we
23:19 can do is we've been playing with lots
23:21 of these tools so we can help you short
23:24 circuit you know a learning time for for
23:26 having to figure out which ones are
23:27 worth your times which on are a waste of
23:29 time if you come to this Workshop none
23:31 of what we're going to show you is going
23:32 to be a waste of your time we promise
23:34 we'll get you up to speed quickly and

27:43 overwhelmed by it Diana that's a big a
27:46 big part of why I do this is is to
27:49 address exactly that and you know this
27:52 is when I first started getting into AI
27:55 I was thinking like oh this is this is
27:56 good for efficiency and we can build off
27:58 automations and everything will be more
28:00 efficient and we'll do our work more
28:02 efficiently and I was only thinking
28:04 about this AI stuff in the in the
28:08 context of work and as and you know
28:10 computers as a work augmentation
28:14 tool and more and more I'm I'm leaning
28:19 why we're calling our Workshop a
28:22 playshop um is that I think I think it's
28:25 really important right now to play
28:27 because this is absolutely
28:30 overwhelming and I think it's important
28:32 to get you know to to just have as good
28:35 an attitude as you can about it by just
28:37 like take the pressure off having to to
28:40 learn it all cuz you can't and take the
28:43 pressure
28:45 off it having to be
28:48 perfect and you knowing exactly what to
28:50 do with
28:52 it so I think just playing is the I
28:55 think playing is the key right now so
28:57 it's a really good point most people do
28:59 feel overwhelmed by it I think a lot of
29:01 people in this channel a lot of people
29:02 on the salon right now like the the
29:04 salon turned a year old in December and
29:09 so we're we're a year and three year and
29:10 four months
29:12 old and it definitely goes through macro
29:18 cycles of
29:20 enthusiasm and then it kind of dips into
29:23 like Mala and
29:24 depression and then it sort of rolls
29:27 back up it's it's these big waves and
29:30 then within it there's like lots of
29:31 little waves of of just this is exciting
29:35 it's a great perspective to play yeah

29:44 that I would strongly encourage you to
29:46 do is

30:02 up with this idea of play in your skill
30:07 vacuums so a skill vacuum like for me a
30:10 skill vacuum is I can't draw for [ __ ]
30:14 and while I can play guitar and sing a
30:16 little bit I don't really know music
30:18 theory and I can't I I can write songs
30:20 okay but I don't do it a lot so I'm not
30:22 good at music I don't have the attention
30:25 span for programming right those are
30:27 skill vector for me so I think it's a
30:32 really exciting to to play with AI in
30:35 your skill vacuums and see how good the
30:37 tools
30:38 are doing the [ __ ] that you're not good
30:42 at because now you get to be good at
30:45 those things and what you might find is
30:47 that you're actually really good at
30:48 these AI tools that are in your skill
30:51 vacuums and you'll also have some more
30:53 fun and again take the pressure off take
30:55 the pressure off of having to like learn
30:57 the [ __ ] you did and get better at it
30:59 and you better learn AI or you're going
31:02 to be left behind you dumb

32:36 started learning Ai and basically said I
32:39 think I'm going to make an IOS app had
32:42 never coded
32:43 before just [ __ ] had chat GPT walking
32:47 through the process and [ __ ] built
32:49 and launched an IOS
32:53 app that's the world we're in and it's
32:56 going to get it's going to get way crazy
32:58 CER right right now if you want to if
33:01 you want to do that kind of thing you
33:03 need to know a lot of the peace part
33:04 tools and duct tape them all together
33:07 cuz everything's janky right now met a
33:10 lawyer
33:12 yesterday first thing he told me that
33:14 chat GPT
33:18 copies oh that chat GPT copies and his
33:21 colleague got in trouble well sure cuz
33:24 his colleague probably didn't proof read
33:27 the work

33:38 for people that just use chat GPT
33:41 Without Really knowing how to use it and
33:43 know what its limitations are here's the
33:45 other reason to play the other reason to
33:47 play with these tools and ask them to do
33:49 stupid [ __ ] and ask and push the B
33:51 boundaries of them is so that you can
33:54 figure out oh they're actually not
33:56 really good at this certain kind kind of
33:58 thing or when it generates like a whole
34:01 marketing plan you're like oh that's
34:03 really impressive and then when you read
34:04 the marketing plan you realized that the
34:06 same idea is repeated like four
34:08 different times and and the language is
34:10 all funky and wonky and weird and that's
34:14 probably got more to do with you being a
34:16 shitty
34:17 prompter than chat GPT not being good
34:20 right so if people are lazy and just go
34:23 in and go make me a legal brief and then
34:25 they just [ __ ] turn the work in like
34:27 H that was was easy I'm going golfing
34:30 that's on them like understand your
34:34 tools you know if you're if in in the
34:37 '90s if you were in print production and
34:40 didn't understand the difference between
34:41 RGB and cmk images and you put an RGB

36:54 lot oh thank you very much Julian um so
36:57 I started well I've been in I've been
37:01 in sort of tech and storytelling
37:04 Innovation for lots and lots of years I
37:06 I I I'm a Storyteller by
37:08 training um in the mid 90s I started one
37:11 of the first online magazines and I
37:13 started one of the first digital agency
37:15 so I was Chief creative officer of a
37:17 digital agency called agency.com from 95
37:21 I left in
37:22 2002 um and we built a lot of the first
37:25 websites for the Fortune 500 and and
37:28 then my current company is storyvine
37:30 which is an automated video storytelling
37:32 platform so I'm constantly looking for
37:36 like what's the next big thing and like
37:38 when when blockchain and nfts got all
37:40 hot like two or three years ago um I was
37:43 like oh this looks really interesting
37:44 and I got into
37:47 those and having been having been an
37:51 entrepreneur in the early days of the
37:52 worldwide web as I was playing around
37:55 with blockchain and nfts I'm like wow
37:56 there seems to be a lot of excit around
37:58 this this seems like this could be a big
38:01 thing and then the more I learned about
38:03 the projects the more they just seemed
38:05 like nft Bros trying to like rip each
38:09 other off they were just basically it
38:11 was like this big circle jerk of people
38:13 trying to like serve as each other's you
38:15 know exit liquidity for their stupid
38:18 [ __ ] projects that had no value so I
38:20 kind of got soured by that but while I
38:22 was doing all
38:24 that I got involved with a project
38:26 called pixel mind and pixel mind was an
38:29 nft project that was built on top of
38:31 stable diffusion and it was kind of like
38:33 Mad Libs for images it would it would
38:35 say like you know a cyborg and then it
38:38 would have a blank for an animal and
38:39 you'd put in lion or tiger or bunny or
38:43 Hedgehog and then it was a pre-prom
38:46 thing that would make this amazing image
38:48 and so I spent like six or seven months
38:52 just playing around with pixel mind like
38:54 looking at AI images and then I thought
38:57 this this this is fascinating there's
38:59 something here so maybe I should learn
39:01 stable diffusion and so I taught myself
39:05 how to install stable diffusion and use
39:07 Google collab notebooks and I failed
39:09 nine times like nine different sittings
39:12 sitting down at the computer trying to
39:13 get stable diffusion to run and just
39:16 failed [ __ ]
39:18 miserably and then I finally got it and
39:22 and I installed this thing called dream
39:24 Booth which allowed me to upload
39:26 pictures of myself and have stable
39:28 diffusion make like these really crazy
39:30 self-portraits of me I was like oh
39:32 that's kind of cool and in
39:40 fact like these
39:49 are I love that image these are some of
39:53 the images that that I did um using
39:57 stable diffus
39:58 and dream booth and as I made all these
40:01 sort of crazy ass images of me I was
40:05 like well they they're me but they're
40:07 not me and it's like I like this guy is
40:10 sort of like you know fat Willy Wonka it
40:12 was it's funny dream Booth it either
40:14 made me super handsome or like [ __ ]
40:17 you know 450 lbs um but I thought that
40:21 was [ __ ] you know this is [ __ ] funny
40:23 and then like I would see this and I'm
40:25 like I wonder what this guy's story is I
40:26 wanted to know their story so I created
40:28 a project called called Kyle Shannon
40:30 dreams with with all these images that I
40:32 wrote the stories for and so just about
40:36 the time I was getting getting my head
40:39 around this stuff chat GPT came out and
40:42 so that was November 30th 2022 and I
40:45 just I immediately lost my mind and
40:47 realized holy [ __ ] this is the next
40:50 worldwide web that that Chachi BT
40:53 represents for machine learning what the
40:56 worldwide web repres presented for the
40:58 internet that easy access where everyone
41:00 can now have access to these incredibly
41:03 powerful tools um and so I just I
41:07 started the AI Salon the next week like
41:10 I literally when chat gbt came out I was
41:13 already kind of into this stuff and
41:14 thinking about starting a group and then
41:18 and then chat GPT came out and I'm like
41:20 [ __ ] it so December 7th 2022 we had our
41:23 first AI Salon meeting um and we've had
41:25 them every two weeks ever since and then
41:28 I started this Tik Tok Channel then and
41:30 I started a newsletter and I started
41:32 thinking about completely rethinking my
41:35 company Story vine and what we do and so
41:38 so I've been building and thinking about
41:40 it and just playing for for the last two
41:44 years so that's kind of what's going
