17. 3:18right and being able to take actions and and doing so in a in a I guess in a predictable way so I don't know enough about it but
18. 3:29apparently there was a breakthrough and and the significant thing about if there if there was a breakthrough that they can categorize as
19. 3:39AGI in their Charter it says they get to determine when they get to AGI and when they get to AGI all licensing deals are off with say
20. 3:53Microsoft so did you see that GPT on Discord about 749 pizzas no I did not I did not Silver Fox where is that is that in sharah Shar

25. 5:23after being contacted by Reuters open AI which declined to comment acknowledged an intern message to staffers I guess about they missed a
26. 5:34word everyone's reporting fast fast and loose even Reuters uh a project called q and a letter to the board before the weekend's
27. 5:44events one of the people one of the people said I guess when you got 700 people on feeling like they're on thin ice
28. 5:52someone's going to talk um an open AI spokesman said that the message sent by longtime executive Mir moradi
29. 6:00alerted staff to certain media stories without commenting on their accuracy some in open AI believe Q pronounced qar oh it's Q asterisk
30. 6:11qar I'm I'm glad they didn't just call it Q because that would have getting confusing with uh other news that we're going to hear in
31. 6:182024 um could be a breakthrough in the startup search for what's known as artificial general intelligence AGI one
32. 6:25of the people told Reuters um open AI defines AGI as autonomous systems that surpass humans in most economically
33. 6:33viable tasks take that in AGI are autonomous systems so you don't have to prompt them they just go that surpass humans in most
34. 6:47economically viable tasks let me read that one more time open AI defines AGI as autonomous systems that surpass humans in most
35. 7:00economically viable tasks giving vast Computing resources the newest model was able to solve certain mathematical
36. 7:07problems the person said on condition of anonymity because the individual was not authorized to speak on behalf though
37. 7:13only performing math on the level of grade school students acting acing such tests made researchers very optimistic
38. 7:21about Q's research yeah one of the things I read about it is they did it on a very small model um and so they I
39. 7:29guess what they cracked is the method for how to how to get it to do reasoning they did it on a very very small model
40. 7:36but the theory is if you cracked reasoning on a small model then just like open AI you just scale it and U you
41. 7:44know the theory is that it's going to scale you know it's it's predictable um researchers consider math to be a frontier of generative AI
42. 7:58developments all right so it's possible I mean listen that was that was kind of the speculation here was that something
43. 8:06something happened that caused an urgency and I I certainly don't think that Sam Alman announcing the GPT store
44. 8:18um Rose to the level of someone's got to go so um that said I don't know why them discovering AGI would be a reason for
45. 8:29him to go but whatever um okay welcome everybody let's let's jump over to this here
46. 8:43nonsense we'll get started here so uh first of all Happy Thanksgiving a day early um I think I'm going to take
47. 8:52tomorrow off I'm not going anywhere I could I could do a show but we've got friends coming over and it would be late

49. 9:05I'm curious actually um pop in the comments below I'm curious if anyone is home for the holidays that that

51. 9:20Sam Alman are they talking about AI at all are they just completely oblivious to it I'm I'm curious what's happening I

53. 9:35home for the family did you see that GPT disc oh no okay that that I did not see only Tans um writers doesn't say what Q is it does

56. 10:26thing so that with with qar open AI have likely solved plan planning SL agentic Behavior as in agents as in autonomous agents as in you
57. 10:43give them a goal and they go work [ __ ] out for for small models scale this up to a very large model and you can start
58. 10:51planning for increasingly abstract goals it is the fundamental breakthrough that is the Crux of a agentic behavior so you got your

62. 11:41really hard habit to break like I'm not good at math I have a degree in acting I can do words good I don't do math good
63. 11:50um one of the thing that these large language models do is they you can be good at stuff you're not good at or at
64. 11:58least understand it without having to go Google it and get a Stamford continuing ed degree um Q maath jpeg okay um can
65. 12:15you explain the math here or what this model is uh saying
66. 12:31all right come on chat GPT the image you've uploaded appears to be a state action wait a state action
67. 12:40reward State wait a sarsa Model A State action reward State action I if Pate are you in here if pate's in here Pate knows
68. 12:50I bet I bet pate's been saring up up a storm a form of reinforcement learning this is not strictly a meth mathematical
69. 12:59formula but rather a conceptual diagram for an algorithm used in machine learning okay one state so the S okay State and action so the S is
70. 13:11State a is action this is the situation in which the agent currently finds itself in the diagram these are represented by S1 2 3
71. 13:224 a this is what the agent can do in each state okay represented by a 1 2 3 4 reward when an agent takes an
72. 13:32action it receives a a a reward or penalty from the environment that's not explicitly shown but it's an integral
73. 13:41part okay so it's some state it takes an action and then I guess this is the reward system or the penalty system and
74. 13:49it says you did good or you did bad and then it tries another one it says you did good you did bad and tries another one that's cool okay Q
75. 14:00value this is a function that estimates the total amount of rewards an agent can expect to accumulate over the future
76. 14:08starting from a given State and taking a particular action the values q s to the one a to the 1 q s the 2 a to the two
77. 14:18represent these estimates the sarsa algorithm updates the Q value okay so that so this makes sense so so you give
78. 14:26an agent a goal and it either gets rewarded or penalized and so so think of it like card counting so the Q goes up a
79. 14:34point or down a point and then it tries another thing in a so now the state's different it takes a different action
80. 14:41and then the the Q goes up or down right and so basically it's trying [ __ ] and learning along the way and I assume what
81. 14:49you do is you program it so that you want Q to go up um the colored Square the red one with the O likely represents the current state
82. 15:03action pair under consideration these arrows rep represent the possible transitions to the next state with the
83. 15:10corresponding actions the green square might represent the terminal state or state of a different property the sarsa
84. 15:17model is on policy meaning it evaluates and improves the policy being used to make decision as opposed to off policy
85. 15:28like Q learning that evaluate a greedy policy okay see now now we're getting into Stanford Mass [ __ ] I don't get it
86. 15:34but that's okay whatever basically it tries [ __ ] and then it gets better or not um how can it get back to base

88. 15:54explained it in a way I can kind of get it so apparently this this is a big breakthrough so or they got it to they

91. 16:15it's really bad you got to be nice to the robots people Ethan mullik just released a paper it it the fundamentals
92. 16:22of psychology actually work with large language models treat your robots nice dang it all right up up yes yers I will be getting
93. 16:39my 16-year-old grandson up to speed possibly my 20-year-old nice um what did I miss um so what you missed is there's a
94. 16:51Reuters there's a Reuters well there's a there's a piece from the information that I assume inspired these Reuters to
95. 16:58go do this so so this article basically said that shortly before Sam Alman was fired um there was a breakthrough there
96. 17:10was a letter sent and a breakthrough in um reasoning a step toward AGI basically and I guess it was significant enough that it it
97. 17:24caused I don't know if it caused it I don't know if it's related there is specula there was speculation on Friday
98. 17:32that they must have stumbled onto something AGI like and stumbled on is the wrong word Ilia probably programmed it and it
99. 17:44worked uh have we talked about qar yet I was just talking about it yeah in fact so what's cool is um we there's your star there's your
100. 17:55Q Star right so there's all your q's and and so um this diagram was out on Twitter talking about q and then I
101. 18:04didn't know what the hell this meant and so I went to chat GPT and and I didn't say please but I said can you explain
102. 18:10the math here or what this model is saying and it explains it it's a sarsa model it's a state action reward State action model so you give a
103. 18:24large language model a goal it's got some it's got a state that it's in it's got some action it can take
104. 18:31it takes that action and then it either gets a reward or a penalty and the Q carries that reward or penalty value to
105. 18:39the next state and then it takes another action and then it gets rewarded or penalized there and then it carries that
106. 18:47value to the next state and then it so basically it's learning right so it tries something and then it gets told
107. 18:55did you succeed or not so so this could so so think about this just in terms of hallucinations right you ask it to give
108. 19:02you the answer to some historical Challenge and it gets half of it right and it makes half of it up and it's
109. 19:08completely wrong well with with a model like this you could say you know give me an answer I'm in this state someone just
110. 19:15asked a question so give them an answer and then um it'll get penalized or rewarded and then it'll you know it
111. 19:25might do that two or three times before it actually gives you an answer answer and then it would give you right
112. 19:35answers so Mouse in amazze stuff yeah it's pretty much mouse in a maaz stuff yeah it's exactly what it is and and Q
113. 19:42is the memory right so Q is carried between these different 1 two 3 4 States right so it's basically it's card
114. 19:52counting if if you know card counting this is Vegas card counting you you're positive or negative didn't we see this
115. 19:58in war games probably I mean listen a lot of the a lot of the uh a lot of the basic mathematics here the components of
116. 20:06it have been around for a while so it's it's these you know researchers trying things in different combinations uh and and applying it to
117. 20:15whatever these things do so wild wild and wacky stuff but I think this does um this does lend cred ability to David
118. 20:29Shapiro's uh prediction that we're going to see AGI within 12 months which is absolutely nuts like I I don't really know what that means
119. 20:40but when you when you go to that that reuter's uh article this line open AI defines this line open AI defines

139. 24:41knowledge work until you put these tools inside the robots that Elon Musk and five or six other companies are making
140. 24:49right now that are they're basically in testing right the humanoid robots so at that point these things can
141. 24:56then do phys physical tasks as well but basically any knowledge work when we hit AGI autonomous systems that
142. 25:08can surpass humans in most economically valuable tasks um so so it's it's it's a big deal it's a big deal and that's I mean and
143. 25:22that's that's why that's why open AI is structured so weirdly it's why they've got this weird clause in the deal it's
144. 25:29why they've got they invented this thing called the Capp profit um model and they've got this weird thing
145. 25:38that says when they declare that AGI has been hit all licensing deals are off I guess for the new stuff I I assume that
146. 25:46the licensing deal is still there for gp4 um uh what did Becky say hang on Sir this is a Wendy's

154. 27:08right they're weird um but but uh but I'll I'll walk you through you know where to start so the the first place to
155. 27:16start if if you haven't played with chat gbt is to go play with chat GPT now that Sam Sam alman's back it seems like we we
156. 27:25narrowly averted this thing complet blowing up so I I think I am hopeful that they actually get the contract
157. 27:34signed and everything stays stable um it looks like this company is going to be the leader in this space for
158. 27:44sometime Google apparently has a model that's a competitor to this but they can't seem to launch it and I saw a
159. 27:51thing today that said that their internal culture is a mess right now and that's one of the challenges of getting
160. 27:59that out um open ai's culture right now seems pretty remarkable when they fired Sam you had like 97 or 98% of the
161. 28:08employees signed a piece of paper that said if the current board doesn't resign we're out of here 90 like 7 it was like
162. 28:17770 out of 790 employees or some crazy [ __ ] like that so chat GPT right now the the first bullet point there it's true
163. 28:29multimodal meaning it can see images it can make images it can do um data analysis it can do all the language stuff it can talk it can
164. 28:41hear and so it is an incredibly powerful tool and they also released these things called custom gpts which are basically
165. 28:52like you can create in minutes an incredibly powerful ful personalized tool like let's say you run a gardening
166. 29:00store and you want to provide a tool for your customers to be able to um plan their Gardens for different times of the
167. 29:08season and put you know sort of subtle branding and ads in there um as they ask their questions you can do that you can
168. 29:16build it in minutes you can share those things like that so um so go play with that um I think that's it let's let's

178. 30:58so basically what happens is you have I guess a large language model but you have one of these tools in a state and then given the
179. 31:09state it's got some actions it can perform so S1 is State A1 is actions and then Q is basically the score maybe
180. 31:18quantity I don't know I don't know what Q stands for but Q is the score so in this state it takes an action and then some
181. 31:27tool some measurement tool basically says was that action good or bad and then it gives it a score and that score
182. 31:34goes into q and then it moves on to the next state it says okay given that you took that action here's the new state
183. 31:41and here's your new set of actions you can take and so it takes an action there and so basically it's just sort of
184. 31:47adding or subtracting to Q's total you know as it goes from state to state to state and takes action after action
185. 31:53after action um so so this is apparently the model that they had a breakthrough around um and and a a uh a letter was written shortly before
186. 32:07Alman got fired so that's that's what Dad is that's what Dad is but I I mean hey not for nothing if you have
187. 32:16not if you have not played with chat gp4 did you know it could do [ __ ] like this like you can upload a math diagram like
188. 32:23this and say hey what is this and it figures it out for you I I mean just this stuff continues to blow my mind so
189. 32:33what happened with Microsoft's so what happens with Microsoft's co-pilot um you mean if they hit AGI and if all licensing bets are off I
190. 32:44assume I assume that part of the licensing deal is they get to keep any non AGI um technology so gp4 is is not AGI
191. 32:58maybe it's gp5 maybe it's this project called qar I don't know if they're the same thing right gp5 could just be a
192. 33:04more scaled version of gp4 qar might be a whole different layer that sits on top of the base the the frontier models like

236. 42:15better at coherence across different scenes you won't have that weird thing where the main character sort of changes looks in between scenes

240. 42:53instantly involved in the runway Discord and start Hawking your stuff up there because I bet they're cutting deals with

351. 1:01:16of that action gets graded basically good or bad and so Q gets rewarded or penalized based on how it did then it
352. 1:01:24goes into a new state takes another action gets gets rewarded or penalized uh and it goes round and round it basically just you know keeps
353. 1:01:34improving and doing that the letter has nothing too interesting in it it maybe kind of does math okay for a fifth
354. 1:01:45grader yeah that's what they said they said they said right now it's doing it it's it's a really small a really small

387. 1:07:48what's interesting about it and help me visualize it and then you sit back and you watch [ __ ] run through a series of
388. 1:07:56tasks where it prompts itself and writes python code and executes it and gives itself answers and then looks at the
389. 1:08:02answers and goes no I don't like those let me try that again oh no I don't like oh yeah here we go oh here's some
390. 1:08:07interesting stuff oh let me try to visualize that now and it visualizes it for you so it will take seven or eight
391. 1:08:14steps with your one goal that's an autonomous agent it's a really simplified version of it so what they're
392. 1:08:22talking about is autonomous systems where you can give them a goal and they just go that surpass humans so better than
393. 1:08:32humans and and this is the thing in most economically valuable tasks holy [ __ ] so what people get paid to
394. 1:08:45do they're defining AGI as a system that is better than most humans at economically valuable tasks so being a lawyer being an accountant
395. 1:08:57being a an analyst being a programmer being all of it all all knowledge work and then when
396. 1:09:12these systems get built into humanoid robots and can go build [ __ ] then it extends Beyond knowledge work
397. 1:09:25so so that's why it's a big deal the other reason it's a big deal is when in in chat gpt's in open ai's
398. 1:09:36Charter when they declare they've hit AGI licensing for the AGI technology is separate from non AGI technology and
399. 1:09:50so Microsoft right now has access to all of gp4 if whatever they've put together here if it's qar plus gp5 equals AGI that
400. 1:10:03technology is not part of the Microsoft deal that goes back to the nonprofit to benefit Humanity fired Sam Alman do not
401. 1:10:12have deep business experience they've got deep research experience and and it's it's the the imperatives of the of

742. 2:07:45politicized now that it's just like I want a group that has empathy because this AI stuff is profoundly powerful and is going to very very
743. 2:08:01quickly force a lot of change people are afraid of it now they're angry about it now and it that's going to get worse and
744. 2:08:09so I want a group that recognizes that while some people might be really excited about this a lot of other people are scared of it
745. 2:08:19or don't know how to deal with it or think they're way behind or think they need to be a [ __ ] mathematician from
746. 2:08:24Stanford so I think it's important to just put out there here's the kind of people we want in here and I don't you
747. 2:08:34know this isn't about any kind of ideology other than I want a supportive place for people trying to figure this

757. 2:09:58discourse and communicated with one another like we were human you can make money with CU if we can then we will make
758. 2:10:13money with chat GPT I'm telling you what this group is going to produce some cool [ __ ] I'm telling you just people in here are
759. 2:10:21going to do some cool [ __ ] I'm making a bot to do the whole com compassion thing on myself oh that's really interesting
760. 2:10:30Pate in what way you're you're teaching yourself to be better at Compassion that's a super cool idea I one of the things about gpts we
761. 2:10:42we haven't really talked about them tonight but um the idea of doing really personal or really informal gpts is is really fascinating to me
762. 2:10:58there's a guy in the salon called Peter Kaminsky and he created a GPT for a conference call he had you're like what he had a conference
763. 2:11:09call like a 1hour conference call with six people and he took the transcript from that conference call and he used
764. 2:11:16that as the knowledge to create a GPT and sent it to the six people and said here's a GPT that you can ask questions about the call we just
765. 2:11:26had so that's a GPT that's got a shelf life of about a week I'm like oh [ __ ] that's wild like we can create sophisticated
766. 2:11:37applications now that are disposable why not so like the thing Pate was doing you know creating a compassion training bot
767. 2:11:48and actually you know what would be super cool here watch this we can we can do it we'll do it with pi I have an idea I want you to help me
768. 2:12:04with a game that teaches me how to be more compassionate she's going to like that idea I made a GPT on how to reset the US
769. 2:12:15government idea teaching compassion through a game sounds like a fantastic way to make learning more fun and

777. 2:13:29thing that that's a whole other category of these things is you you know all of the lonely people that don't have anyone
778. 2:13:37to talk to will now have someone to talk to and with synthesized voice they could be talking to someone they know and it
779. 2:13:47could even be trained up on you know writings or emails of that person so it could you know have the same tone of
780. 2:13:54voice as them there's a difference between discussing and debating and arguing absolutely agree and that's
781. 2:14:02that's what I want is I want to place why is it called the salon not cuz we have it's not about the hair obviously it's called the salon the
782. 2:14:14great the great the great tradition of salons at the turn of the century where you get smart people in a room together and just talk about
783. 2:14:23[ __ ] have someone come in and you know talk about a book that they wrote in our case have someone come in and talk about
784. 2:14:31something cool they're doing with AI or you know privacy issues or security issues or um art you know um ethical
785. 2:14:45issues we had um John knack who's one of the the senior AI guys at Adobe has spoken at the salon twice now the first
786. 2:14:53time he spoke at the salon they hadn't launched Firefly they had a couple of tools that they were playing with internally
787. 2:15:04and like two months after he presented them they launched Firefly like we got Early Access to see what Adobe was up to
788. 2:15:11it's really cool it can insulate people from communicating directly with me which is better for all involved that's
789. 2:15:18great that's great for all involved parties that's really good though listen I mean listen know your strengths and
